We are deeply saddened by the loss of abstract painter Katherine Porter, whose massive bright & cacophonous canvases reveal a highly personal expressionism. Rest in peace. 🙏

These sculptures are surprisingly light, buoyant, and perfectly at home hovering against the wall. John Duff draws attention to the spaces within his sculptures by either slicing open their fiberglass shells to reveal interiors or by allowing the translucency of the fiberglass to admit light into the inner spaces.

Katherine Porter’s 𝘈 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦, now on view in our latest exhibition 𝘌𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘥𝘨𝘦.

𝘈 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦, 1983

H 79 x W 97, inches

Katherine Porter’s painting, 𝘈 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦, has naturally recognizable focus, such as, city buildings, saw blades, stars, sun & braided wire. Such images carry a rich resonance of specific association; however, the picture does not have an iconographic scheme. Instead, these objective references have an almost heraldic presence, hovering between abstraction & figuration, gaining compositional interest from the ambiguity.

Katherine Porter was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1941. She received her B.A. degree from Colorado College in 1963 and studied at Boston University. Porter received an honorary doctorate from Colby College in 1982 and an honorary doctorate from Bowdoin College in Maine in 1992.Her paintings have been exhibited worldwide in both major galleries & museums. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, MI; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; theMuseum of Modern Art, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, NY; Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA; High Museum of Art, GA; Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts, PA, the Parrish Art Museum, NY, and the Walker Art Museum, MN, among many others.

Porter is recognized for the combinations of colors, geometries, and symbols she uses to comprise her compositions: circles, triangles, rectangles, squares interposed with lines, spirals, arcs, scaffolds, and matrices all of which coalesce on her surfaces to emanate an unmistakable aura of spirited force and generative energy. These elements combine to produce a charismatic beauty that emanates from their complex authenticity for which she is known.

By popular demand we are extending our 𝗔𝗥𝗧| 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗞-𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗥| 𝗔𝗥𝗧 exhibition to December 2nd.

Stop by & view the hand-carved Patriotic Eagle Plaque by George Stapf (1862-1958).

Tues-Sat, 12-5pm

𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗳 (𝟭𝟴𝟲𝟮-𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟴) was a carpenter & carver from Harrisburg, PA best known for carving large, stylized eagles for government buildings, Civil War Veteran’s halls, and commissioned work. Born in Columbia, PA in 1862, Stapf was the son of a German engineer. At some point he moved to Lancaster city where he opened a confectionery & made candy. He was so successful in this venture that he sold his caramel recipe to Milton Hershey.

Around 1890 he left the candy business behind & moved to Harrisburg, where he with his brother, John, opened a carpentry business. They built houses & buildings with George specializing in spiral staircases. George, began to carve eagles in the 1890’s, to supplement his income over the winter months, working in his shop behind his home.

In this newly discovered trade sign for David Danner, a three dimensionally carved hand holds an ink pen that dramatically extends beyond the parameters of the oval plaque. Below this demonstration of skill, a laurel wreath holds a circular glazed aperture with calligraphic inscription describing Danner’s occupations. This trade sign is clever in its self-referential formula in advertising both woodcarving and pen drawing the artist demonstrates his abilities in both mediums within one sign. The hand and pen are finely carved bringing to life the calligraphic abilities mentioned in the ink-on-paper medallion. It’s near perfect and un-weathered condition indicates that it was used for display indoors, likely in the studio of the maker.

David Danner, Jr. (1844-1950) was born to farmer David Danner, Sr. (1808-1877) and Mary Young (1813-1899) of Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio, and married Nancy Lentz (1849-1910) also of Stark County. He is described in the 1904 genealogical survey, Old Landmarks of Stark County, Ohio as an agriculturalist and generous supporter of Canal Fulton’s Presbyterian Church. Additionally, census data lists his occupation as farmer up to the 1910 report, in which his occupation is listed as “odd jobs.” This change appears to coincide with the dating of the trade sign, and the possible need to advertise his abilities for hire.

Combining charm and precise ex*****on, this ranks among the great examples of an
American folk portrait of a cat. The white cat with black spots is seated on a red-draped paint-decorated “𝘉𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯- 𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘦” rocker. Testament to the artist’s attention to accuracy is the hole in the back post where the missing left arm would have been attached. The bright yellow eyes, gesturing raised paw, and spot on the nose impart personality and an air of mischief to this beloved family pet.

A possible identification for the artist may be Harriet Guilford, the daughter of Charles Guilford (1833- 1913) and Mary Jane Guilford (1837-1904), who was born in the town of Cuba, Allegany County, New York, on March 16 1861. She was married to Coy Winthrop Hendryx in 1886, and by 1900 the couple was living in Dowaigic, Cass County, Michigan, where she died in 1953.

Tadaaki Kuwayama
(March 2, 1932-August 18, 2023)

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of the artist Tadaaki Kuwayama.

Kuwayama’s achievement and influence in the American Minimalist movement was vast, quickly gaining notoriety after his move to the United States alongside wife and fellow artist, Rakuko Naito, in 1958. Establishing himself as an active member of the avant-garde in New York, Kuwayama was befriended by Kenzо̄ Okada, Sam Francis, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, and Frank Stella. His first solo show was held at Green Gallery in 1961, run by art dealer Richard Bellamy. Kuwayama’s striking work was included in many landmark exhibitions, such as 𝘝𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘷𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘦 𝘒𝘭𝘦𝘶𝘳 (New Shapes of Color), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands and 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨, the emblematic exhibition organized by art critic Lawrence Alloway at the Guggenheim, both in 1966. He has been the subject of countless solo and group exhibitions around the world, and his work is included in the collections of institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Foundation for Constructivist, Concrete and Conceptual Art in Zürich, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. His contributions to painting at large cannot be understated, as he investigated space, color, and surface in new and enlightening ways. Kuwayama did not simply create paintings, but works that command presence, contemplation, and awe. In his words, “I wanted to make pure art without history.”

To say he will be missed does not fully capture the depth of this loss to the art world and to those who were lucky to know and love him. We are extending our heartfelt condolences to his beautiful family, friends, wife and life partner, Rakuko, at this time.
