What have you been up to the last couple of years? Hint: you will never guess what I did!
I am a very accomplished strength coach with multiple championships, too many degrees and certifications and I've had some of the best jobs in the industry.
Covid sucked. Everything about it made me angry, everything. That anger crept into one of those great positions when I was the director of a program and ultimately led me to move on due to unfortunate circumstances.
Then, at the ripe age of 43, married with 2 kids, I thought it would be a great idea to return to a dream I had 20 years ago and become a cop.
That's right, during the worst time for that profession and for my stage in life, I got hired by an agency and went through the academy, completed on-the-job training, and was on my own. 7 months into the job, I decided it wasn't the right time at this stage in my life.
To be honest, it was the best experience and decision I ever made. I really did think I would be a cop for the next 20 years. Although the job didn't work out because working midnights at 43 while being a dad and husband was harder than we thought it would be, the experience gave me the opportunity to have no regrets.
Now, I am able to clearly see my vision as I re-open My Coach Rich and help those who want training and nutrition. Over 20 years in the field and I took a break to fulfill a dream.
I'm not saying it was smart or that I am better than anyone. I am just sharing this experience because so many people are unhappy and it is never too late to try something new. To be honest, I didn't want any regrets in the end. As a result, my path is clearer than it has ever been.
All that said, what have you done so you can move forward without regrets?

I get it. I’ve been where you are now.

You see, I went through a period in my life where everything sucked. I had fatigue issues, libido issues (not fun by the way), I was gaining body fat, had sleep issues, experienced bloating and I was unmotivated to do anything. As you might have guessed, these are all very bad symptoms for a 35-year-old professional in the health and fitness industry.

Let me rewind a bit. I had just moved from Los Angeles to Phoenix for the love of my life. Before Los Angeles, I had recently left the University of Florida as the strength and conditioning coordinator for basketball, tennis and golf. As you can imagine, like most people, I was stressed and excited at the same time. I couldn’t believe that I found that special young lady, and stressed because I just left a business in Los Angeles to start over knowing no one in Phoenix. Life was great for a while.

My Health Unravels

After about three months in Phoenix, I caught pneumonia. At the same time, I was training for my first physique show. If you don’t know what goes into training for those shows it is strict nutrition and calculated training. Since I was more accustomed to training high level athletes and making sure body fat was appropriate for athletics, I used some old school guidelines to lean myself out to be show ready. Of course, I now know there are better ways. However, at the time this type of preparation was new I and decided to go with a method that has been used for decades.
