Our Story
Variety is a children's charity--simply helping kids no matter the need--by providing vital medical and therapeutic services, essential support, and recreational and educational opportunities to children with unique and special needs.
With the partnership of a dedicated board of directors, supporters, volunteers, and a small but mighty staff of two, Variety serves over 20,000 children annually across Southeast MI.
Quite simply, we're small enough to listen, but big enough to make a difference--swiftly and soundly, always with dignity and compassion.
Variety's began on Christmas Eve, 1928, when an abandoned baby girl was found on the doorstep of The Sheridan Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A note was pinned to her shirt pleading with the theater people to raise the child. A group of 11 gentlemen affiliated with the entertainment industry agreed to underwrite the child’s support and education.
They called the baby “Catherine Variety Sheridan” and thereby founded the first Variety chapter or “tent.”
Today, Variety has 45 tents around the world. Detroit’s Tent 5 was established in 1932. Funds raised here, stay here as we strive to service those who need us most.
