You may have noticed that among our early bloomers in the garden, Magnolia stellata flowers are wide open...but their leaves have yet to appear. The reason for this occurrence is an adaptation to encourage pollination. The lack of leaves helps to prevent wind obstruction, and flowers in large masses are more likely to attract pollinators. Magnolias date back to the Cretaceous period predating bees and butterflies. Instead, they are pollinated by beetles. Their flower structure is arranged to facilitate insects bumping into their pollen structures while moseying from flower to flower among a few other cool adaptations to ensure the highest likelihood of pollination.
