It’s Back to School time across the State of Michigan. Bus transportation safety is just one of the many areas in which our traffic engineers are knowledgeable. The Michigan Vehicle Code requires drivers to stop their cars 20 feet from a stopped school bus displaying its flashing red lights and remain stopped until the bus resumes motion with those lights off.
School buses are like traffic signals:
• When overhead lights are flashing yellow: Prepare to STOP
• When overhead lights are flashing red: STOP
• When hazard warning lights are flashing: Proceed with caution
Keep our kids safe!

Friday Fun Fact:
The first 'zebra' painted crosswalk was implemented in October 1951 in Slough, England. After experimenting with several designs, the black and white stripes proved to be efficient: they could be easily seen by drivers and pedestrians alike from afar. High contrasting colors such as black and white also help pedestrians with low vision find the crosswalk and align to cross.
Countries all over the world have chosen the zebra crossing. They may have different variations though. But they all agree the black and white stripes ensure the safety of pedestrians.
Happy Professional Engineers Day to the creative minds dedicated to making our world a better place.
You are truly appreciated!
Long before it was fashionable and there were awards for such things, HRC has always taken pride in being a top place to work. We value our employees, support them in their goals and recognize individual talent. HRC’s dedication to our employees is evident in the longevity of so many. One such example is Nancy Faught. Friday Fun Fact:
It wasn’t until 1956 that Michigan motorists were required by law to follow a set speed limit on highways. The speed limits went into effect and speed limit signs were posted; 65 miles per hour by day and 55 miles per hour by night. Prior to this, it was at the discretion of the driver to decide what was a ‘safe’ speed!
Lia Michaels is our August Employee Spotlight of the month. We’re so happy you’re part of our HRC family.
This week’s photo of the week and first place winner of HRC’s Through the Lens contest is of a bridge inspection conducted for the City of Pontiac which required a confined space entry. This bridge is a long cast in place concrete channel that allows storm water to flow beneath the City of Pontiac. Channels are routinely inspected to ensure the concrete channel is still structurally sound. The photo is of an HRC employee getting hoisted out of the manhole where access was needed to enter the channel.

Speakers/presenters showcased individual projects and new technologies that attendees can use in their respective career fields. One of the cooler pieces of tech was a new application that has been developed that uses your iPhone 12 Pro (or newer) camera to scan sidewalks with the iPhone’s integrated LiDAR scanner. This application then exports a point cloud in multiple formats to allows the user to review and perform condition assessments on stretches of sidewalks/ADA ramps.
The User Conference also had an extensive map gallery display that showcased a multitude of map exhibits with all sorts of artistic styles and layout options. There were more than 150 printed maps and almost 200 digital maps displayed at the map gallery!
