In 2020 I was diagnosed with HER2 positive breast cancer. After a year of chemotherapy, and a positive outcome, I chose to return to college and pursue a certificate of massage therapy at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois. This past Saturday I passed the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards Massage and Bodyworkers Licensing Examination.

I am so thankful for all the people who made this possible. Thank you to my wonderful fellow students and my instructors. Thank you to my awesome brother and sister-in-law who provided outstanding accommodations. To my sister-in-law, who can now pronounce every muscle in the body (can you say lateral pterygoid?), went through all 600 muscle flash cards with me multiple times, and who listened to everything about the human body organ systems that she never wanted to hear, I cannot thank you enough! Did I mention she is a great cook?

Most of all I am thankful for my spouse who believed I could do this and reminded me when I doubted. Kinesiology, anatomy and physiology, and pathology are difficult subjects, but a wonderful knowledge to have. Who would have thought I would go to sleep at night listening to lectures on the human body?

I will begin my practice at the amazing Summit Spa in Quincy, Illinois. I am blessed to be joining a group of experienced professionals.

In a world where technology has taken away so much of our human interaction, massage therapy brings the body back to itself and gives human connection. Massage increases the levels of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, our feel-good hormones. And it feels incredible.

As I begin my practice, my future career goals will include focusing on continuing education in migraine management, fibromyalgia pain management, and eventually serving the cancer community.

I have only touched the surface of being a knowledgable practitioner. In the meantime I will be giving Swedish relaxation massage, deep tissue massage, and hot stone massage.
