The First Nations Educational & Cultural Center (FNECC) supports the recruitment and retention of American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and Indigenous students, faculty, and staff at IU. Its mission is to build a Native community within the university, enhance the recognition and reputation of these communities, and provide educational opportunities that further awareness of First Nations people.

A week ago today we got to spend time with Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi at their Wild Rice Camp. It was a day full of ceremony, cultural practices, language and food!! No doubt our students, faculty and staff will never forget their visit. Chi miigwetch to NHBP Food Sovereignty and NHBP Culture Department for hosting us and being our friends! We’ve got a couple of events coming up that we want you to know about! Next week Thursday, Sept 12th, we will be hosting Ephraim Anderson at the Eskenazi Museum of Art for a presentation at 1pm with crafting and visiting the galleries to follow.

We are also signing up people for our Fall Book Club. We’ll be reading Never Whistle at Night and Kaiaulu with meet ups on Oct 2nd and Nov 12th at 1:15pm.

Super thankful for a wonderful open house today! We were so excited hanging out and eating we forgot to take more photos! We saw lots of old friends and made lots of new ones. Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate 10 years in our beloved Center! Stay tuned for more events to come and if you missed us come and visit 10-5pm Mon-Thurs and 12-5pm on Fridays!

Thank you to Penn State and the Indigenous Peoples’ Student Association at Penn State for hosting the 2024 Big Ten Native Gathering! We had a great time meeting other Native students, faculty, staff, and Miss Navajo Nation! We were proud to represent Indiana University and our community.

Alexandra McNichols Torroledo, photographer and journalist, will have an exhibition of her collected works displayed at the Gayle Karch Cook Center in Maxwell Hall January 25th-March 1st.

Alexandra's work highlights indigenous people in South and North America who are affected by mega-projects and violence that are imposed on their territories, changing their lives and cultural survival. Come join her opening reception on January 25th at 5pm at Maxwell Hall!

The Pacific Islander Student Association, the First Nations Educational & Cultural Center, and the Indiana Memorial Union Board are proud to present our 2nd Party for the Pasifika event, a day full of Pacific Islander culture and fun! This year we will have two afternoon workshops, an island dinner, and an evening Pacific/Reggae/Jawaiian fusion concert featuring HI Risk Faktor and the legendary Kapena!

All activities will be in the Solarium of the IMU and the final concert will be in Alumni Hall next door. RSVPs for the workshops and dinner are recommended, but not required (see individual links for registration). Schedule is as follows:

On November 16th at 5:30pm, we will be hosting Derik Goatson of the Navajo Nation for a conversation on practicing Native law. He currently resides in Washington, DC and works as an attorney for the federal government.

Join us this Thursday, November 2nd at the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University for an exciting program and artist talk with visiting artist Dani Tippmann, who is an Artist in Residence at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis this fall!

Dani Tippmann is a Myaamia citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. She keeps the knowledge associated with Myaamia culture, including traditional crafts, foodways, and plant usage.

Dani's talk will begin at 1:30pm, followed by a sensory room experience at 2:30pm featuring sounds and sensations of the Midwest prior to colonization, as described in the Myaamia language.
