The AME Church on Boundary Street was built in 1853 by the Bluffton Methodist Episcopal Church and is the oldest religious structure in town. In 1874 the Campbell Chapel was sold to 9 formally enslaved people.
The building is Greek Revival style, temple form, with exterior clad in board and batten siding.
In 1933, a tornado damaged the building and knocked down trees (shown in the photo).

To kick off Gullah Geechee Hertage Month, we begin by honoring our Founder, Louise Miller-Cohen. "Mrs. Louise" as she is affectionately known within the community is fulfilling her purpose by preserving the Gullah culture and history of Hilton Head Island.
The Gullah Museum shares an interesting story of the independence of our Gullah ancestors on Hilton Head and life "Before the Bridge." As she continues to share her wisdom and insight with everyone young and old, educating them on a culture and history of the Gullah people whose existence is threatened.
She encourages everyone to dive deep into their family's history, know their history, share their history, and preserve their history.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT LETTERBOXING and Treasure hunting in BTown???
Letterboxing combines artistic ability with “treasure-hunting” in parks and forests that the whole family can enjoy. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by following clues to their prize: a rubber stamp—often hand-carved—to stamp into one’s own personal logbook.
History: Letterboxing has a rich history crossing continents and centuries of time. Where did it begin? How has it evolved? This page has all the details.
Getting Started: The materials you’ll need to get started with this hobby, and some helpful tips in finding and planting your first boxes.
Frequently Asked Questions: What is letterboxing? Who does it? Who runs Atlas Quest? Get answers to all these and more by clicking the link for BLUFFTON.

The Historic Bluffton Foundation was originally the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society.
"The Bluffton Historical Preservation Society was established, over a quarter century ago, to protect, preserve and promote the cultural heritage and history of St. Luke's Parish (est. 1767) through education, marketing, hands-on preservation of buildings and sites, maintenance of an historical archive and operation of the Heyward House Historic Center. In 1998, the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society purchased the Heyward House. Their Caldwell Archive is one of the largest collections of archival resource materials in the state. Vision Statement: Bluffton Historical Preservation Society, Inc. will be a recognized local and regional force for the promotion of historical, cultural, and arts activities through its Heyward House Historic Center, Educational Outreach, and Community Partnerships." ~AmericanTowns.com

Historical fact:
Two days before the infamous “Burning of Bluffton”, in June of 1863, a Union gunboat raid on several nearby Combahee River rice plantations resulted in the escape and freedom of about 70 enslaved people. The raid would never have happened without the aid of local guide and scout, Harriet Tubman, who had information that would aid in navigation.
Executive Director, Robert Jones, addresses members at the annual meeting of the Historic Bluffton Foundation.
"Deertongue, as a plant was known, grew plentifully in the sandy soil around Bluffton, and Dr. John Mellichamp (born in 1829, settled in Bluffton permenantly in 1856) gathered it on his long walks & dried it for sale to the perfume and the to***co industries. Deertongue probably provided the first commercial industry in Bluffton. The to***co companies, in a practice that was not revealed until many years later, ground the dried plant and blended it with to***co to produce an aromatic vanilla-like flavor. The practice was stopped in the 1970s, when it was discovered to have carcinogenic characteristics."
