π£π We're thrilled to announce that our USCB nursing students had a fantastic day representing at the StAND-UP Conference! ππ£
StAND-UP (Strengthening Achievement and Nursing Diversity with URM/DB Program for South Carolina) is an incredible pilot program aimed at enhancing the diversity of the registered nurse workforce in South Carolina. Our students are participating in this one-year virtual diversity, equity, and inclusion academy, which is designed to support underrepresented, minoritized, and disadvantaged background (URM/DB) students.
This program offers a wealth of resources, including presentations and hands-on experiential learning with local community health workers, helping our students gain a deeper understanding of social determinants of health, health equity, and social justice advocacy.
Additionally, StAND-UP provides lifelong professional development resources, ensuring our students are well-prepared for their careers. The conference last week was a wonderful opportunity to discuss lessons learned and plan the next steps.
We are so proud of our students for their dedication and hard work in promoting diversity and equity in nursing! ππ

Calling all USCB Nursing Graduates! The USCB Department of Nursing is once again taking students on a study abroad program. This year we plan to go to Guatemala with HELPS International. I have volunteered with this organization for over 10 years. They are doing great community development work in Guatemala. On this trip, students will learn about the culture of Guatemala, particularly the indigenous people of the mountain region. Students will build fuel efficient wood burning stoves, install water filtration systems, and provide medical screenings. Many of the immigrants in the Lowcountry come from countries in central America and a trip like this would provide students a new, more in-depth perspective, of their culture and health needs.
How can you help?!?!?! Donate today at https://giving.uscb.edu/sfp/nurs/nursing-study-abroad-program
A stove costs $250, a water filtration system costs $50, and student out of pocket expenses are $1500. Any donation will help make this trip a success.
