Since this is Womens' History Month I pulled out my copy of Charles E. Glaghorn's book, "Women Patriots of the American Revolution: a biographical dictionary" and counted up the names. Did you know that in 1991, there were 581 women in South Carolina recognized at Patriots? Pretty impressive if you ask me.

Check it out!

The E Pluribus Unum Educational Initiative, an ongoing effort by the DAR, will focus on members of underrepresented groups who supported the cause of the American Revolution. As part of the DAR’s mission to preserve the past and encourage people to learn more about the nation’s history, the Initiative will support new scholarship, create educational programming, and develop new research tools that complement work being done by other organizations, with the goal of enriching our understanding of the different people behind the effort of the colonies to win independence, and recognizing those who have been left out of the historical narrative.

The American Revolution in South Carolina - Bloody Point 01/27/2023

During the American Revolution there were about 30 skirmishes in and around the Beaufort District (which then included the present day Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampden Counties). The earliest one of these was on 9 July 1775 - when two barges were sent from Beaufort to Bloody Point (located at the southern tip of Daufuskie Island) to intercept of a shipment of gunpowder.

The Patriots were able to take off 16,000 pounds of powder and "seven hundred-weight of leaden bullets." They also "took away all the bar-lead, sheet-lead, Indian trading arms, and shot that were on board." The Carolinians and the Georgians divided the cargo between them. The South Carolinian’s powder was taken to Tucker’s Island where 4,000 pounds were put on board a schooner and delivered to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

The Great Northeast Blackout 11/09/2022

On this day in history - The Great Northeast Blackout -At dusk on November 9, 1965, one of the biggest power failures in history occurs as all of New York state, portions of seven nearby states, and parts of eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. The Great Northeast Blackout began at the height of rush hour, delaying millions of commuters, trapping 800,000 people in New York’s subways, and stranding thousands more in office buildings, elevators, and trains. Ten thousand National Guardsmen and 5,000 off-duty policemen were called into service.

The blackout was caused by the tripping of a 230-kilovolt transmission line near Ontario, Canada, at 5:16 p.m., which caused several other heavily loaded lines also to fail. This precipitated a surge of power that overwhelmed the transmission lines in western New York, causing a “cascading” tripping of additional lines, resulting in the eventual breakup of the entire Northeastern transmission network. All together, 30 million people in eight U.S. states and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec were affected by the blackout. During the night, power was gradually restored to the blacked-out areas, and by morning power had been restored throughout the Northeast.

11 Ancient Solutions for Modern Malaise 09/15/2022

One way to increase your own happiness is through service to others!
"In other words, charity is a gift to the giver. Service to others is one of the easiest ways to get happier. Volumes of research attest to the fact that giving to charity and volunteering, spending money on others, and more radical acts such as donating blood and organs all raise well-being."

11 Ancient Solutions for Modern Malaise The Roman philosopher Seneca’s essay “On a Happy Life” is full of lessons that are as pertinent today as they were two millennia ago.

33rd Annual River Sweep

Saturday, September 17 @ Oyster Factory Park

Participate in the 33rd Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep on Saturday, September 17th from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

The event will be held at the Oyster Factory Park on the May River (63 Wharf Street). This is the 33rd year this statewide event has been held and the 14th year in which Bluffton has participated. Thousands of volunteers across the state participate annually in this event, which is South Carolina’s largest one-day, volunteer, litter clean-up of beaches, marshes, and waterways.

The Town of Bluffton encourages all individuals, families, friends, schools, youth groups, civic groups, conservation groups and businesses to volunteer for a few hours to clean the river and roadsides which drain to the river.

Necessary supplies including gloves, bags, sunscreen, and water will be provided by event partners. Just bring yourself and wear comfortable clothes and appropriate shoes.

Litter pickup will be taking place around the Historic District and on the May River. Local kayak club members will be assisting with cleanup efforts on the water. If you’d like to participate with your own boat or kayak, please arrive by 8:30 a.m. to allow time for setup.

Each local volunteer becomes a citizen-scientist and records data about the type and amount of litter they collect. This data is tabulated, added to South Carolina’s statewide data, and is incorporated into the Ocean Conservancy’s worldwide data. This cumulative data provides crucial information on the sources of litter so communities can better identify and target anti-litter education.

If you need more information about the event, please contact Beth Lewis, water quality program administrator, with the Town’s Watershed Management Division at (843) 706-4559 or via email at [email protected].

To make the Town’s cleanups as sustainable as possible, i2 Recycle will be providing recycling services and bins. Volunteers will separate the litter they collect into two bags. i2 Recycle will process and recycle appropriate types of litter. Waste Management has also partnered with the Town to provide a trash receptacle so non-recyclable materials can be disposed of properly.

We are so excited to have raised over $250 for Tamassee DAR School at the South Carolina State Society NSDAR recent Fall Forum through the generosity and kindness of South Carolina DAR daughters. These plates were used as table decorations for several meals and chapter members assisted in their assembly. We accepted donations for them after they had fulfilled their task. They illustrated South Carolina revolutionary battles, important individuals during that time frame, and silhouettes of men and women across society. Plates were vintage china from thrift stores in Bluffton. 🌟

Emily Geiger Chapter

The Emily Geiger Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution is located in Bluffton, South Carolina. We are the third in South Carolina to carry the Emily Geiger name. The chapter was founded in 2005 and has grown from 23 founding members to well over 100 members. We have women in a wide range of ages and life stages and are active in our community. We volunteer in various capacities, both as individuals and as a group. We contribute hundreds of hours annually to the Bluffton area in the areas of education, patriotism, and historic preservation.

We meet monthly from September to May on the second Thursday of each month. Meeting times and places are announced. While meetings are generally during the day, we have several meetings that will take place in the evening or on weekends. We also have other activities throughout the year!

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.

DAR members volunteer millions of service hours annually in their local communities including supporting active duty military personnel and assisting veteran patients, awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students, and supporting schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars.
For more than a century, the members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution have dedicated themselves to historic preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotic endeavor. These goals are as relevant in today's society as they were when the organization was founded in 1890.
