New York artist Arlene Shechet prefers to work with clay because it is elemental.
“It has no character, so I can make anything."
"Clay is one of these materials that lets a person be both in control and out of control. It’s a real conversation with the work."
"If I add a piece of clay too soon, it collapses. Too late, it won’t attach. There’s a perfect moment to do everything. And then when the moment passes, it’s gone."
"The fact that you have to make things hollow is something I’m attracted to. This mushy substance becomes structural. You can push up against it; you can create form in a way that something that’s solid could never create form. If it’s a completely solid thing, then it can’t be fired.”
Arlene Shechet, “Deep Down and Widespread,” 2016, glazed ceramic, steel, and wood. Acquired 2017; Acquired with the generous assistance of a gift from the Bequest of Bernard and Florence Starkoff by exchange

It’s World Goth Day, so today we’re turning our raven-black-lined eyes to a towering work that’s painted dark as the corners of our sorrowful souls. This wood construction, titled “Shadow Chord” by Louise Nevelson, practically screams “it’s not a phase, mom!” as it leaps out the back of a parked SUV to join its friends for a stealthy smoke in the girl’s bathroom. And indeed, it wasn’t a phase. This onyx hue characterized Nevelson’s work throughout her career.
Shadow Chord’s abstract shapes, cutouts, and shallow reliefs play with shadows in a way that we can truly appreciate – albeit without cracking a smile – on this special, dark day.
Louise Nevelson, Shadow Chord, 1969, painted wood construction. Acquired 2001; Museum purchase with funding provided by Collector's Forum and partial gift of Mr. Sid Deutsch
This work was recently restored as part of a Bank of America Art Conservation Project 2023 grant.

Meet Samantha Rodriguez, our 2024 Spring Bryan E. Levine Education Intern at the Boca Raton Museum of Art!
Ms. Rodriguez recently graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts where she majored in Studio Art and minored in Art History. She brought her a deep passion for art and a desire to learn “all things museum” with her. Samantha was instrumental in implementing our public programs; helping with our student, family, and adult programs. Additionally, she completed research for upcoming exhibits and supported our outreach initiatives working festivals in Boca and Delray. Samantha has embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and dedication. Her experience at the museum has been a journey of personal and professional growth, filled with enriching experiences and meaningful connections.
We are thankful to our sponsor, Mindy Helman-Levine and the Bryan E. Levine College Internship Fund, for supporting our efforts to provide career development opportunities for young adults.
