Our rose hair tarantula, Trixie, feeding on a hornworm.
Tarantulas are nocturnal hunters that eat a variety of insects, small vertebrates, and sometimes even other spiders. They use their fangs, called chelicerae, to inject venom into their prey, which then paralyzes it. The chelicerae are attached to venom glands which are attached to muscles that inject the venom. They then use their strong jaws to crush and manipulate the prey and absorb the resulting pulpy liquid.
It's not every day that you get to see a tarantula feeding. In this video you can clearly see the fangs injecting the venom.

Our Art Gallery for October featuring...
Sandpiper Shores Elementary School!
They are displaying their spooky Halloween and nature themed pumpkin artwork.
Don't "Leaf" Us
“With our 5th graders graduating this year, I wanted to include them in this show. Their work, inspired by the fall season, features their own unique takes on surreal pumpkins. Have you ever thought of what could be living inside of a pumpkin?
I think it is extremely important for us to build up their self-confidence. My phrase in my classroom is "have confidence with Miss Cann." After six years of teaching these artist's, I encouraged them to infuse their personal ideas to show them they are intelligent artists. What are some ways you can add your own ideas to projects that already exist? I’m thrilled to share their creations with you and hope you "Fall" in love with them!”

Our Volunteer Spotlight for October features Animal Care volunteer Jason Cuddihy!
Jason is a senior at West Boca High School and has been a Daggerwing volunteer for one year. He was born in Fort Myers, then lived in Buffalo, NY, before moving back down to Florida.
In his free time, Jason likes to watch action movies and Anime, as well as playing video games. A surprising fact about Jason is he is highly skilled at the Rhythm Genre of video games and enjoys showing people how good he is!
His favorite vacation spot is St. Augustine where his grandmother owns a beach house. While there he enjoys looking for crabs at nighttime. Jason started volunteering because of his love for animals and he felt it would be the most enjoyable way to earn his volunteer hours needed for a scholarship. He loves being able to feed the animals at the nature center, his favorite is Benedict, our box turtle. Jason loves his laid-back personality and how he finds him hiding in strange places, making it fun and challenging to find him.
Jason feels that his friends would describe him as empathetic because he cares about others and how they feel. We can definitely understand this as Jason shows great empathy and compassion for the animals he cares for here at Daggerwing! Jason is always willing to help out and do what is needed.
Thank you, Jason, we really enjoy having you as part of the team!
