Diagnosing rare chromosome disorders often requires visiting various medical and genetics professionals to diagnose. Medical geneticists are trained to evaluate, diagnose, manage, treat, and counsel patients with hereditary disorders. Meeting with a medical geneticist is an important step in understanding and managing a rare chromosome disorder.

Families seeking to understand genetic disorders will encounter a variety of medical and genetics professionals on their path towards a diagnosis. Genetic counselors spend a lot of time with families offering guidance and helping to assess the risk of children having hereditary disorders. Being diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder will likely involve meeting with a genetic counselor.

Genetic disorders, especially rare chromosome disorders, can be difficult to diagnose and predict. Genetic testing can be key in predicting the likelihood of genetic conditions and in diagnosing them. Several kinds of genetic tests can occur at different stages in someone's life. What has been your experience with genetic tests? Tell us in the comments.

Chromosome Disorder diagnoses can be difficult to understand. Particularly with rare chromosome disorders, there is a shortage of information and this can make diagnoses overwhelming for families. We at CDO help support families through our chromosome brochures. Members of CDO are eligible to receive personalized information packets based on their genetic analysis reports. The information is all selected and approved by our consulting geneticist. While this report is a valuable resource it is always important to follow up with your personal healthcare provider who will best be able to answer questions about your situation. Go to our website www.chromodisorder.org to become a member, receive your personal information packet, and learn more about CDO!

Chromosome disorders affect 1 in every 140 children. This statistic represents a wide variety of people. Let's learn a little bit about the types of chromosome abnormalities that may impact their lives.

Remember that chromosomes are the structure that holds our genes. These genes are the instructions that tell our bodies how to develop and run our everyday lives. Most humans will have 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs. When a person has extra or missing chromosomes it can affect their development and health. You can learn more about these abnormalities at our website: chromodisorder.org
