A friendly reminder to practice gratitude this holiday🎅 season. Many of us have endured changes that are good and bad this year, which means our kids have endured it as well. A great way to build mental stamina 💪🏽 for ourselves and our kids is by practicing gratitude 🙏🏽 .

The best way to teach 👩🏼‍🏫 your child about gratitude is by modeling it. A good example is: I’m so thankful for our beautiful tree, I’m so lucky to enjoy the pretty lights and ornaments. Another example: I am so excited to see our family soon, I’m so thankful to spend time with them and share yummy food!

By not forcing our children to say they are thankful but by being(by verbalizing)thankful in front of them, we are teaching them a strong skill. It also helps kids navigate tough times by taking mental stock of what is going well and is good in their current situation.
I’m always thankful for a safe, healthy and happy holiday season🎄 with all of our wonderful PoB families!

Happy Thanksgiving to all our PoB families and community!

We are thankful for many things this year but to list a few: all of our wonderful families and their new additions(👶🏻🍼), our staff—who have come in daily and never called in last minute, their dedication, health, and lastly thankful for our growth. We are truly blessed this holiday!

We also want to make a special note that we’ve undergone some growth along with unusually high levels of infectious diseases this season. We try our best to get everyone seen to avoid urgent care(especially during the week). This usually meant longer wait times on busy days(Mondays, Fridays, day before holiday closures). Inspite of this, our families have shown us patience and kindness when seeing that we are working around the clock these past few months. We know it’s a trying time for our Parents with sick children. Thank you to everyone that has shared a kind word, said thank you, brought us treats and coffee to cheer us on!
At the risk of sounding redundant, we really are thankful and blessed by our PoB community!!

We are closed Thursday and Friday for some much needed rest and will be back in the office on Monday, ready to take care of your family with renewed vigor!
Your Pediatrician,
Dr.B

Meet the Staff Monday!
I am so very pleased to introduce Austin to all of our PoB families. Several of you have been helped by Austin these past couple of weeks. Austin recently relocated to Boerne/Fair Oak, Texas from North Carolina(which is where I grew up and went to undergrad: Go Deacs!).
Austin has beeen a tremendous help to our growing practice, and has helped implement new hippa compliant communications system in office, removed quite a bit of admin work off my hands and has been all around pleasure to have in the office! If you notice some new movies playing in the waiting room, you’ll have to ask Austin about it🥰 Please welcome our new addition as we have some temporary changes happening to get ready for Vanessa to take her Maternity leave.
Any tips for Vanessa as she will soon be a Mom of three will be welcomed from our expert PoB parents!! 🥰🤪
As always,

Able Groupe Recalling Products Labeled as Infant Formula Formulas Have Insufficient Iron Levels as Per Requirements for Infant Formula in The U.S., and Products Do Not Meet Other FDA Requirements 08/25/2021

To all our PoB parents using any of the HIPP, Holle, Kendamil and some other European formulas, please note they are no longer FDA approved. While breastmilk and formula tends to be low in iron, these formulas were particularly shown to have lower than acceptable levels to meet the nutritional requirements for your infant. Please stop using these formulas, switch to any regular term ones that do meet these requirements such as enfamil or similac. If you have questions about any organic formula, please reach out to our office via portal or messaging system, we can also do quick televisit for any formula w/ special requirements.

Please pass this info onto any friends or family members as well! We are striving to keep up with current reccs and guidelines to best meet your baby's needs!

All jokes aside, Mom shared that Joy wanted to be a actor or a doctor one day and I made her promise that she would use these pictures on her graduation 👩‍🎓 slides when the time came🥰. Nail care tips:

Nail 💅trimming for your infant can be intimidating as a parent, so here are some tips:

-trim after a bath 🛀 when baby is relaxed and nails are soft
-choose appropriate clippers or files made for 👶🏻
-pick a area with good lighting ☀️and get comfortable
-push back the skin of the finger and get the clipper under the nail and clip
-babies kick frequently, so best time to trim toes are when baby is napping 😴
-should you accidentally cut the skin, stop the bleeding with pressure, apply some OTC antibiotic ointment and cover with bandaid🩹 if needed
-DO NOT bite nails off, peel nails off, you may cause an infection or damage the nail bed

Happy mani/pedi to all the parents!

Umbilical cords:

🛁 only 🧽 sponge baths until the umbilical cord falls off
🛁 keep the umbilical cord dry, if it gets wet, gently dry and leave it alone.
🛁 no need to use alcohol on the cord.
🛁 the cord will shrivel and eventually fall off.
🛁 keep the diaper folded down below the cord
🩸 ok to notice a few drops of blood on the diaper or on the onsie as the stump falls off
🏥

🏥See your pediatrician if you noticed redness around the base of cord, discharge, crying when cord is touched or moved

Hope this helps!

Fever 🥵

I commonly get questions about fever. Here’s a quick run down:

🔥Fever is anything that is 100.4 or higher-for all ages
💊Fever can be treated with Tylenol up to 6 months of age, and Tylenol or Motrin for 6 months and older. Look at the instructions on the box for dosing, or use calculators online.
🔥Rectal temp is the most accurate way to measure for a newborn(and up to 2 months of age), however, if you are uncomfortable doing this and are worried about your baby, see your pediatrician.
👩🏽‍🍼Fever in a baby under 8 weeks of age is considered a medical emergency, seek care as soon as possible(your pediatrician or emergency room).
🌡For older babies and kids, I suggest getting a thermometer that you as a parent feel most comfortable using(Ear vs temporal thermometer vs axillary vs oral)
🌡Ear thermometers can be used around 6 months of age and older, oral thermometers on the other hand are more accurate for kids 3 yrs of age and older.

Happy Monday!

Happy Friday to all our families!

I love using social media to make informative posts that answer questions about day to day issues families face. This is also an opportunity to clarify any information available in the media. So today I would like to address recent articles about dangers of baby food and heavy metals being found in them. I’ve been getting lots of great questions from parents, so I hope this helps.
🥑🍌🍎🍓🥦🥒🥕🍚
1. This is concerning information, but it is ongoing and not new.
2. The level of metals in baby food is a result of these metals being present in the air, water, and soil related to runoff or pollution from chemicals used in manufacturing and farming around the US and around the world.
3. Due to above, it is important to have legislation in place to reduce this pollution and protect our environment where we can. This is why the AAP advocates for protecting our environment, as it can directly impact the health of all children. However, some metals in food is a direct result of how its grown and difficult to avoid.
4. While we have always known arsenic is present in rice(due to agricultural practices involved in how its grown), we still don’t recommend completely eliminating it, but to limit.
5. We also monitor lead levels by offering screening at 12 months and 24 months of age. While it is difficult to watch your child be poked for blood work, this is an important screening to perform.
6. At this time, the general consensus is that babies do not require routine screening testing for arsenic. Likely the amounts of exposure is still well below limits to cause any clinical effects. You can consider working on moving on from purees at the appropriate time and adding texture and softening up table food and providing it to the baby vs pureed only.

The news or article may be discouraging but here is my take on this: This has likely been taking place for many, many years, and we continue to see children that grow up to be bright and amazing adults:) Like with most decisions you make as parents, exercise caution on making any extreme decisions, and do the best you can.
Here is a link to a wonderful website that shares info on baby food.

Please reach out to your pediatrician for any questions or concerns, or write this down on your list of questions to go over at your next visit!
