Bronco Motors Sawtooth 200

For over 15 years Southwest Idaho has hosted one of the best cycling events in the west.

While the Sawtooth is more about the adventures along the way (and based on post-race chatter there were plenty), results are here: https://www.omnigoevents.com/events/st200-2023/results?columns=[%22pos%22,%22bib%22,%22name%22,%22time%22,%22speed%22]

Less than three weeks until this year's Sawtooth!

Many have asked about carpooling from the finish to the 100 and 180 start lines.

If you are looking for a ride, let us know which start line you need to get back to, and when you are heading back (Saturday night or Sunday). If you have room to spare, help us out :)

This year's poster gets straight to the point, as does this message :)

Many thanks to Bronco Motors for their increased support, Sawtooth Brewery (we hear people get thirsty), and Kate's Real Food (we hear people get hungry). And once again, thanks to Magnusen Design for the design help.

We can't say it enough, without the continued support of our sponsors and racers, we wouldn't be able to host this amazing day on the bike :)

04/28/2023

Just a little over a month until Bronco Motors' Sawtooth 200! We are excited for the event this year and give another huge shout out to Bronco Motors for their support.

Just a reminder, Sunday is the last day to register and get your free custom t-shirt so don't delay.

Congrats to everyone who took the first step to a great day on the bike in June :)

We added 10 more early registration slots as we surpassed our initial limit of 40 sooner than expected. If you are looking for the best pricing, including the relay, now is the time!

2022 Sawtooth 200 Recap

This year’s Sawtooth provided everyone with their own adventure, and I thought I’d share mine in my role as “event director’s helper”.

The big experiment - Uncut
Coming from a bit of an endurance cycling background, I often wondered why some people didn't try the full Sawtooth route without a relay. Many riders from around here challenge themselves with LOTOJA, so why not do something even harder right in our own backyard? Over the past two years, riders asked about it, some seriously (thanks Toby and almost the entire Team Reel Theater), and the seed was planted. With registrations for the LP/Sawtooth declining every year since about 2015, we were eager to breathe new life into one of the pillars of Idaho cycling, the others being the Twilight Criterium and Bogus Basin Hill Climb.

It quickly became apparent that permitting was the biggest hurdle. Yet somehow Katie (event director) was able to convince all the right authorities that we could safely deliver a mass start ride, and almost overnight, the Uncut was born. And so at 20 minutes before sunrise, our first group of Sawtooth Uncut riders assembled at Barclay Bay in great spirits, truly pumped for the ride despite the foreboding forecast. They were soon followed by the traditional relay teams over the next 2 hours.

Perseverance
If I had to sum up the 2022 edition of the Sawtooth in one word, it would be perseverance.

After spending much of the day out on course clearing more debris from the roads and starting the Sawtooth 100, I waited nervously at the finish, wondering if the weather was just too much to overcome. Before the first rider crossed the finish line, we already knew of at least 10 DNFs. I had the pleasure of getting to know an out-of-state Uncut rider as I shuttled him from Stanley to Ketchum as we baked in the car, heater full-blast, trying to raise his core temperature after he, like many of his Uncut comrades (competitors just seems wrong), were forced to abandon after the weather and distance had taken too much from them.

But sure enough, riders started finishing. First across the line was Solo 100 mile rider Brian Anttonen, fully decked-out tt-style, kicking up a rooster tail, in the flashing lights of our follow vehicle. We would love to have that photo, but alas, we're also the timers.

About 30 minutes later, we saw our first Full distance finisher, 4-man team Tritown, setting the fastest time of the day, again :) Right behind them was the fastest 2-person 100 mile team of Jenn Halladay and Robert Hoene, Point Beyond. And shortly after them were the always smiling 6-person team 2C2.

At almost 5pm, just over 11 hours after starting, Mark Yoder became the first ever Uncut rider to complete all 180 miles. Aside from setting the fastest time, Mark scored huge points with at least one of his competitors, as Mark lent him his rain jacket. I'd imagine that was a hard choice to make while being pelted with rain and temps were dropping. Only two other Uncut riders made it to the finish line, Shilo Hawks and Bryan Johnson. This was truly a day where just finishing was a huge accomplishment. Chapeau :)

Megan Letsinger riding for Hoppy Cycling arrived shortly after 5:30pm, making her the first Solo 100 Women finisher. It’s a great reminder that people from all cycling backgrounds (road racers, ultra endurance cyclists, triathletes, and even mountain bikers) take on the Sawtooth!

As the afternoon continued, we got peeks of blue skies and short sleeves. The expo started to fill up with riders and crew, finishers and non-finishers, exhausted but happy to share the day's adventures over burritos and beer. Seeing the big smiles on people’s faces made all the prep work that goes into the Sawtooth worth it!

And finally, we come to one of my favorite parts of the event, waiting for our final rider, as they usually have some great stories to tell. New rider Caleb (he just got his bike this year) finished at 7:29pm. His longest ride before the Sawtooth 100 was about 40 miles. What a way to break the 100 mile barrier! Welcome to this crazy world of cycling :)

Many Thanks
An event like the Sawtooth relies on riders who come to the start line ready to challenge themselves and their fellow riders. This was even more true in 2022, when many were questioning whether they should even start given the weather forecast. But the event cannot happen with them alone.

This year in particular, we really need to thank all the other people who made this possible. First and foremost, Bronco Motors and George's Cycles provided financial and logistical help. I can't stress enough that we owe this year's Sawtooth to them. In addition, many others contributed in vital ways, including the Sawtooth Brewery, Bob Petersen from Fairly Reliable Bob's, Josh Letsinger and Trinity Petersen from Bronco Motors, Vern from Bob's Bicycles, and Brett from Magnussen Design.

And of course, we couldn't put on the event without our volunteers. You probably already met them:
Laura Hedrich: Uncut aid stations 1 & 3, and Stanley Aid Station
Krista Cater: Stanley Aid Station
Ken and Mackenzie Warner: Uncut aid stations 2 & 4
Trinity Petersen, Maryanne Hedrich, and Sue Weaver: Finish Expo

Parting Thoughts
I hope that you'll join us for next year's Sawtooth, an event that will again be brought to you by countless people in the Boise cycling community. To make that happen, we need your help. Please spread the word if you had a great time. An endorsement from a fellow-rider means more than anything a promoter could say.

The course is clear! Today was spent driving the course, clearing the road of debris, and putting up signs along the way to keep the cyclists safe.

Here is a quick pic during today's drive :)

Anyone have room to bring a fellow cyclist back to the 100 start on Saturday evening?

05/24/2022

For the Uncut riders (those going the full route from Boise to Ketchum without a relay), there will be 4 aid stations at Mores Creek Summit, Grandjean, Stanley, and Frenchman Creek. Bring what you need and drop them into two bins that we provide. The first bin will be at Aid Stations 1 and 3, the other bin will be at Aid Stations 2 and 4. Any empty bottles left in the bins after Aid Stations 1 and 2 will be filled for you with water. No need to have any additional support, but it is allowed, at transition areas only.

If it were me, here’s what I would do (though I’d probably have a lot more bars):
Two bottles per bin with my name on them
Fruits
Bars
Salt tablets or something very salty.

I am sure you can do better :)

05/18/2022

We did a bit of digging and published the course records (in Miles/Hour). At least one new record will be set this year for the Uncut Men. Ladies, any takers? Will any other course records fall this year?
