Help extend wildlife habitat into your yard with some free sagebrush seedlings! Check out the details from Boise Parks and Recreation

📢 Add native sagebrush to your yard or garden for FREE! Every year, Boise Parks and Recreation’s Open Space Division collects sagebrush seed from specific open space reserves. The seed is taken to Lucky Peak Federal Nursery, cleaned, and grown out into seedlings that are planted for restoration. Lucky Peak Nursery always grows more seedlings than are requested to ensure they can fulfill orders and this year - we have a surplus! This Friday, April 12 stop by the Jim Hall Foothills Learning Center (3188 Sunset Peak Road) between 3 and 5 p.m. to pick up a bundle of 10 sagebrush seedlings to take and plant at home. Please note, these seedlings will need to be planted into areas with irrigation or where they can receive supplemental water as spring temperatures rise.

We are in search of a drone that can help us film some river footage for a short ReWild video this spring. We have a certified drone flier, but no drone. Any leads are appreciated!

There were special visitors at the Boise River Rewild project on Saturday. Golden Eagle Audubon Society Board members Louisa Evers, Jo Anne Lafferty, Martha Brabec, Karen Fullen, Sierra Laverty, Abby Urbanek, and Lisa Reed were given a tour by Executive Director Cynthia Wallesz, ReWild Coordinator Danae Fails and Project Manager Sean Finn. We were honored to have Boise City Councilman Jordan Morales for Boise and his family attend the tour as well. The three Morales children pitched in with the planting.

Thank you Jordan Morales for Boise for spending your Saturday with us! It was a BIG day of planting over 600 seedlings. We had a wonderful crowd of volunteers and it was a pleasure to have your help!

Some volunteers are like birds - they don't stay still long enough to get a good photo. This is Tom Rosenthal in action at our Boise River Rewild Project. Tom has only begun to volunteer with GEAS, but he's no stranger to volunteering, and he was quick to hit the ground...literally. He pounded, dug, and pried at rocks with a crew from Micron Technology to build a new split-rail fence at Boise Parks and Recreation's Marianne Williams Park in very rocky conditions. Tom saw the project through from planning and measuring to leveling and cleaning up. Tom is reliable, skilled, professional, and friendly to everyone on the job. We're so grateful for your time and help, Tom!

Thanks Helen!

Helen Fisher retired as a middle school teacher last year and went straight to "work" for Golden Eagle Audubon as a Presenter and Boise River Rewild Project leader! She is a brilliant volunteer with many interests; a real renaissance woman! Helen co-leads the Access Management team, helps on the Education and Outreach team, and has adopted a plot for her neighborhood. Helen is teaching our ReWild class on Sept. 11 and our Introduction to Birding class on Sept. 13 (check our calendar to sign up). Helen's enthusiasm for conservation is contagious and her passion for the environment and birds guides her everyday life! Thank you Helen.

The Boise River ReWild Project is all about restoring natural ecological function to acres of habitat along the Boise River. Find out exactly what that means and gain a better understanding of the long range vision of the project by attending this class taught by Coordinator Danae Fails and Plot Leads Jon Mathews and Helen Fisher. The class is Sept. 11 at 6:30 at Timberline High School. Registration is required through Boise Schools Community Education Program - https://www.boiseschools.org/our.../community_education

This study found a 7x the number of insect species in just three years, confirming the ecological benefits of urban greening projects similar to our Boise River Rewild Project!

Every Little Bit Counts: Small Plots of Native Plants Boost Insects in Urban Settings City insects need native plants, too. A new study shows even small urban patches of native plants can significantly increase local insect species diversity.

We are so grateful to have Nell leading our native plant production for Boise River Rewild Project. She's keeping our nursery with 15,000 seedlings in ship shape!

"Nell Lindquist has been a godsend to the Boise River Rewild Project, the most intensive community-led conservation project in the Treasure Valley. Nell volunteered to manage both the ReWild Plant Production team and the Native Plant Network nursery in Boise Parks and Recreation's Comba Park. Drawing on her decades of experience in horticulture and nursery management, Nell guided more than 100 volunteers to germinate native seed, nurture seedlings and pot them up. Her work has resulted in production of more than 15,000 restoration-ready seedlings of 25 native species. We can't thank Nell enough!" Sean Finn, Boise River ReWild Project Director

People volunteer for Golden Eagle Audubon for many reasons, some appearing out of the blue like Carlos Critchlow. Carlos signed up to volunteer in April, and he has logged nearly 50 hours so far not including his commute time from Mountain Home. Carlos is monitoring swallows at bridges near Blacks Creek, he's transplanted hundreds of native plants at Comba Park, and he and his dog Jill are keeping native plants alive at our Boise River Rewild Project plots. Plot lead Jon Mathews said, "Carlos has become a pack mule of sorts. He has hauled so much water out of the Boise, they may have to ration it!" I won't give away Carlos' age, but he's one of the many seniors that volunteer with us. Thanks Carlos!

Great work out there, McMillen!

centers around creating positive impacts in our projects, communities, and surrounding environment. That’s why we are excited to take on a new kind of project by adopting a ½-acre plot along the Boise River! In collaboration with the Boise River Rewild Project by Golden Eagle Audubon Society, we are helping rebuild the native ecosystems that enable the Boise River to thrive.

Last week, our dedicated volunteers got their hands dirty restoring our plot. We rolled up our sleeves to remove debris and invasive species and make room for native plants to flourish. This was our first gathering of many, so check back often to see our plot’s progress and growth!

More than 1,500 native seedlings have been planted at the two half-acre Boise River Rewild Project plots adopted by Golden Eagle Audubon Society The plants are part of a multi-part strategy to re-establish bird and wildlife habitat impacted by land use and water regulation on public land near the Boise River. In her new blog, Guest Blogger Bhavana Padiyath explains that the plant species are carefully selected to provide critical benefits. She visits the site and sees that watering the plants until their roots reach groundwater is a critical part of the project. The ReWild project will be protecting the eroding shoreline at Riffle Beach, in Barber Park. It was eroded by the high flows this spring and needs time without dog and pedestrian traffic to recover.

Can you help on Thursday morning? We'll be installing some temporary fencing as well as planting native plants to maintain the soil and support the wildlife. 🌱🪺⚒️
