The Red Light Variety Show

Please do NOT use facebook message as it is not checked regularly. Red Light stopped performing in 2021

The Red Light Variety Show was conceived in Boise, Idaho in 2008 and featured performance artists who called Boise their home. Red Light created and produced three, original performance art based variety shows each year that were housed at the Visual Arts Collective in Garden City.

Dear Boise, we miss you. We promise it wasn’t you, it was us… and while we don’t have a change in our relationship status, there is something exciting and new on the horizon.

When Red Light ended it wasn’t the final curtain for a lot of our performers and tech team. In fact, the production staff has been busy planning for the last year and formed a new company called Dream Team Variety. From the ashes comes something new and the first show titled Pheonix hits stages in just 1 short month at the VAC. You’re going to recognize many of the same performers that earned your screams on Red Light stages and enjoy a production quality that your favorite tech team constantly delivered.

Look, love is complicated and its ok to fall in love again. What we had will always be special, but damn…. This show looks good!

Dearest best audience ever,

We come to you today with a message of transition. Its no secret that performances have become a great deal more difficult to execute recently and the landscape that we have enjoyed ever since our inception is changing. It’s with a sad, yet full heart that we must announce that the Red Light Variety Show has performed its final show.

Ultimately every group of performers wants to tell an honest story. With your help, we’ve been lucky enough to tell a narrative of expression and body positivity that provided a connection far deeper then any of us ever expected.

Boise has always been a very special place that nurtures creativity and we are so grateful to have experienced this welcoming audience for the better part of 14 years. We prided ourselves on providing a fully immersive theatrical experience where the details mattered and the production value exceeded expectations. Your experience was so important to us and as the lives of our performers and the circumstances of performance have changed, we find ourselves ready to take our final bow where we can become the audience to the next great group of Boise performers.

Thank you to past performers, founding members, guests, sponsors, and tech crew for building the foundation upon which we could dream a new version of what is possible.

Thank you to the Visual Arts Collective for giving us a place to grow, championing artistic expression, and providing a stage to call our home.

Finally, thank you to our audience from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you for cheering us on while we showed you a vulnerable side of ourselves. Thank you for riding the electricity and connecting to our particular form of weird. Thank you for giving us a chance and please take that chance again with one of the many uniquely diverse performers and performance groups that call Boise home.

From our t**s to our toes its been an honor and we love you.

Ladies and Gentlemen, friends and fans, the Red Light Variet Show can't wait to get BACK ON STAGE but first we need your help making sure there's a stage to go back to. The Visual Arts Collective, our home, is about to fail but we can save it!

The VAC has been incubating local art and music for over a decade and because of covid it needs our support. Countless performance artists, visual artists, and musicians have found a safe space inside its walls and to lose it would be to lose a piece of what makes this community so special.

Red Light has always been a body positive variety show that seeks to inspire self love and joy for the bodies we have. The VAC fought specifically for organizations like ours to be able to express ourselves artistically by showing as much or as little body as we would like. Please take a minute, spare what you financially can, and help us save this art and cultural incubator for our community.

Consider what you would have spent to see our last 2 canceled shows ($25 each) and please donate that or whatever you can to make sure that this vital community asset will join us as Boise continues to grow.

We want to come back and perform for you! Please make sure there's a stage for us to bring our pasties and thongs back to.

This place is pure magic. Please help us save it. The Visual Arts Collective has been closed for over 6 months and without community support risks perminant closure. Please pitch in to ensure there's a stage for you to enjoy, and us to go back to.

So many people have stepped up to support this incredible space. Were getting closer to saving the Visual Arts Collective but still have a long way to go. Please help us save our home and do your part to ensure that musicians and performance artists have stages to perform on when its once again safe to do so.

Save Our Stages 08/23/2020

Well folks, it is with a heavy heart and increasingly smaller thongs that we have to once again announce a postponement of our fall show, Curiosities, until January of 2021. Your experience and your health have always been of the upmost importance to us so we will see you again, without pants, when it is safe to do so.

In the mean time............ our industry , our stages, and our venues have taken an incredible hit during the last 7 months. If you are interested in actions you take to help them, please check out the National Independent Venue Association's campaign below. Without this legislation, many of the venues you know and love may not make it.

Dear Red Light family,

There’s no way around it, COVID-19 is causing everyone including your friends at The Red Light Variety Show a great deal of grief.

Are we crazy? Absolutely (about great performances)!

Are we dangerous? Acrobatically you bet (while still observing safety standards)!

Are we reckless? That’s where we draw the line. In light of today’s CDC and government recommendations limiting crowd sizes to 10 or under for the next 8 weeks, it saddens us to announce the cancellation of the remainder of 2019/2020 season. This is tough to do but we feel it’s the only responsible choice afforded to us and we are deeply grateful for your support and your understanding. Our plan is to come back with a whole lot of pent up sass in September to open our 2020/2021 season just when you (and we) need it most.

If you have purchased tickets for any of our April show dates, and if its possible and within your means, we ask if you would consider donating your tickets to the theater. A large number of our performers, tech staff, and the venue itself count on shows like Red Light not only to express themselves creatively, but also to survive. Your donation would go a long way to sustaining body positive, grown-up entertainment and humor during these uncertain times.

We also understand this is a tough time for everyone in our community and we respect and will honor all refund requests. Information for how to do that is available in your Eventbrite confirmation email or by clicking on the following link to find refund instructions:

https://www.eventbrite.com/support/articles/en_US/How_To/can-i-get-a-refund?lg=en_US

In closing, we hope the next few months afford everyone health and time to be with those you care about most, but maybe…..just maybe in those rare chances when no one is looking…… crank up the stereo, put on something sexy or silly, and try out your own burlesque routine knowing that we are cheering for you! Stay safe, Stay positive, Stay weird.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Thems and Theys....we've been getting a lot of questions about our April show and how it's being affected by Covid 19. We’ve been keeping "A BREAST" of the situation...see what we did there, and at this time have elected to stay the course with our April show dates until we know more over the next few weeks. We will follow the advice of the CDC, Central District Health, and local government officials as it comes available and make changes to that decision if it becomes necessary to do so. We care about your health, our performer health, as well as the health of the greater Boise arts community and those whose livelihoods rely on your patronage. Luckily we have a little time to make sure we are making the best decision for all involved. Tickets remain on sale for Curiosities but you can be rest assured if we do have to cancel for this or any other reason, all ticket holders will receive a refund. These are strange times, but we are strange people and are confident the best way through is with each other’s help and support. So with some fully glittered pasties and hopefully a little luck, our booties will see your faces in April.
