✨STRESS & YOUR HORMONES✨⁣

I've talked about stress and your hormones before, but I'm putting an extra emphasis on it since I've found that reducing stress is essential for long-term management of symptoms.⁣

You can see in this graphic that when our bodies are stressed, they are not prioritizing hormone production. In fact, it's turned off. ⁣

We produce hormones, build muscle, detox, and restore balance in the body when we are in a relaxed state. ⁣

The other important area of the stressed state is the release of cortisol. When we release cortisol, we also release glucose from our liver and cause an insulin response. ⁣

If you've been keeping up with my posts, you know that one of the driving factors of symptoms in most cases of PCOS is insulin resistance. Chronic stress can contribute to that. ⁣

So what does this mean?⁣

We all need to prioritize our stress management and actively work on reducing stressors, but it can especially benefit women with PCOS. ⁣

➡️My Top Ways To Reduce Stress:⁣

🔹Be intentional with my food choices. This means choosing foods that fulfill me mentally, physically, and emotionally and balancing my meals with protein, carb, and fat. ⁣

It also means eating enough since I often see this as a HUGE stressor for women. ⁣

🔹Getting to bed before 10 pm. This gives me time to read and get at least 7 hours of sleep, and that makes me happy and also balances blood sugar. ⁣

🔹I use guided meditation in the morning after my yoga practice and at night before I sleep. This uses heart focused breathing to improve my recovery and hormone health. ⁣

🔹I put my phone away while I work and am limiting social media use so I'm not wasting my life scrolling and constantly comparing myself--yes, SM can be a stressor (this is still a work in progress 🤦🏽‍♀️).⁣

🔹Prioritizing movement breaks to get outside throughout the day, so I'm not constantly sitting.⁣
⁣. ⁣

What's your favorite way to reduce stress? ⁣

Seed cycling is a natural and holistic approach that aims to balance hormones by incorporating specific seeds into your diet during different phases of your menstrual cycle. The idea behind seed cycling is that certain seeds contain compounds that can help regulate hormone levels and promote overall hormonal balance.

During the first phase of your cycle, the follicular phase, which typically lasts from the start of your period until ovulation, it is recommended to consume flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds. Flaxseeds are rich in lignans, which have estrogenic properties and can help support estrogen production. Pumpkin seeds contain zinc, which is important for progesterone synthesis.

In the second phase, the luteal phase, which starts after ovulation and lasts until the start of your next period, it is suggested to consume sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. Sesame seeds are a good source of lignans and can help support progesterone production. Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E, which has been linked to hormonal balance.

It's important to note that while seed cycling is a natural approach, it may not work for everyone and should be used in conjunction with other lifestyle changes and medical advice if needed. It's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or hormonal health routine.

Remember, maintaining hormone balance is a complex process influenced by various factors, and seed cycling alone may not be a solution for everyone. However, incorporating these nutrient-rich seeds into your diet can provide additional nutritional benefits and support overall well-being.

ENDOMETRIOSIS & PELVIC PAIN⁣

We know endometriosis is a painful disease, but often women experience pain that isn't directly related to the endometriosis lesions and is actually a coexisting condition. ⁣

Why is it helpful to identify coexisting conditions? Because you may have gotten surgery, are taking hormonal birth control, or are doing all of the right things to heal and you still have pain. ⁣

Investigating possible coexisting conditions can help. ⁣

Common Coexisting Conditions That Cause Pelvic Pain:⁣
1️⃣Interstial Cystitis--also impacts the immune system like endo. If you have increased frequency and pain with urination, ask your doctor about this. You could have lesions on your bladder, it may not be IC, but it's good to rule it out. ⁣

2️⃣Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: This is something I wish I was educated on when I was younger. Every woman can benefit from seeing a pelvic floor PT, but especially women with endometriosis. They can help with tightness and adhesions causing pain.⁣

3️⃣Adenomyosis: A condition similar to fibroids (and often misdiagnosed) that can cause pelvic pain and a heavy period. It's commonly seen with endometriosis. ⁣

Unfortunately, there's still a lot more we don't know about endometriosis and it's not always a simple fix. ⁣

Sometimes surgery makes the most sense and sometimes doing a complete nutrition and lifestyle overhaul can help. ⁣

My best advice is to build a healthcare team that understands endometriosis and is reading the relevant research as we continue to learn more. ⁣

Procrastination is a common behavior that many people struggle with. There are several reasons why people procrastinate, and understanding these reasons can help in finding effective solutions to overcome it.

1. Fear of failure: Fear of failure can often lead to procrastination. When people are afraid of not meeting their own or others' expectations, they may delay starting a task to avoid the possibility of failure. To help overcome this, it's important to reframe failure as an opportunity for growth and learning, and to focus on the process rather than just the outcome.

2. Lack of motivation or interest: Sometimes, people procrastinate because they lack motivation or interest in the task at hand. In such cases, it can be helpful to find ways to make the task more engaging or meaningful. This could involve finding personal connections to the task, breaking it down into smaller, more manageable parts, or finding ways to make it more enjoyable.

3. Perfectionism: Perfectionism can be a significant factor in procrastination. When people have high standards for themselves and fear not meeting those standards, they may delay starting a task. To combat this, it's important to recognize that perfection is not always attainable and that it's better to take imperfect action than no action at all.

4. Overwhelm and poor time management: Feeling overwhelmed by the scope or complexity of a task can lead to procrastination. Additionally, poor time management skills can make it difficult to prioritize and allocate time effectively. To address this, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps and using time management techniques can be helpful.

To support someone in overcoming procrastination, it's important to offer understanding and empathy. Encourage them to identify the underlying reasons for their procrastination and help them develop strategies to address those reasons. Providing accountability and support can also be beneficial, such as checking in on their progress or offering to work together on tasks. Ultimately, helping someone overcome procrastination requires patience, encouragement, and a willingness to explore and implement strategies that work for them individually.

Having a growth mindset is essential for personal and professional development. It is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning. Embracing a growth mindset enables individuals to face challenges, persevere through obstacles, and continuously strive for improvement.

One key aspect of developing a growth mindset is embracing failure as an opportunity for growth. Instead of viewing failure as a setback or a reflection of one's abilities, individuals with a growth mindset see it as a stepping stone towards success. They understand that failure is a natural part of the learning process and use it as a chance to learn, adapt, and improve their skills.

Another important aspect of a growth mindset is the willingness to take on new challenges and step out of one's comfort zone. It is through facing new and unfamiliar situations that individuals can expand their knowledge, skills, and abilities. By embracing challenges, individuals with a growth mindset push themselves to grow and develop in ways they may have never thought possible.

In conclusion, developing a growth mindset is crucial for personal and professional growth. It involves embracing failure as an opportunity for learning, being open to new challenges, and continuously striving for improvement. By adopting a growth mindset, individuals can unlock their full potential and achieve greater success in all areas of life.

Gut disorders such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), dysbiosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and Candida overgrowth can cause a range of problems due to their impact on the normal functioning of the digestive system. Let's take a closer look at each of these disorders:

1. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO): SIBO occurs when there is an abnormal overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. This can lead to symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and malabsorption of nutrients. SIBO can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the gut and interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption.

2. Dysbiosis: Dysbiosis refers to an imbalance in the gut microbiota, the community of microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tract. The gut microbiota plays a vital role in digestion, immune function, and overall health. When there is an imbalance, it can lead to various symptoms and health issues, including digestive problems, weakened immune function, and inflammation.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS is a chronic disorder that affects the large intestine. It is characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but factors such as abnormal gut motility, heightened sensitivity to pain, and changes in the gut microbiota may contribute to its development. IBS can significantly impact a person's quality of life and may require dietary and lifestyle modifications to manage symptoms.

4. Candida Overgrowth: Candida is a type of yeast that naturally resides in the digestive tract. However, when there is an overgrowth of Candida, it can lead to a condition called Candida overgrowth or Candidiasis. Symptoms may include digestive issues, such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, as well as fatigue, recurrent yeast infections, and brain fog. Candida overgrowth is often associated with an imbalance in the gut microbiota, weakened immune function, and certain dietary factors.

Gut disorders like SIBO, dysbiosis, IBS, and Candida overgrowth are problematic for several reasons:

1. Digestive symptoms: These disorders can cause a range of digestive symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits. These symptoms can be uncomfortable and affect daily life.

2. Nutritional deficiencies: When the gut is not functioning properly, it may not absorb nutrients effectively, leading to deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and other essential substances necessary for optimal health.

3. Impact on overall well-being: Gut disorders can have a significant impact on a person's overall well-being, including their mental health. Chronic symptoms and discomfort can lead to anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life.

4. Immune system dysregulation: Imbalances in the gut microbiota and gut disorders can disrupt the immune system's normal functioning, potentially leading to increased susceptibility to infections and inflammatory conditions.

It is important to seek medical advice if you suspect you have any of these gut disorders. Proper diagnosis, treatment, and lifestyle modifications can help manage symptoms and improve overall gut health.

🚨Mental & Emotional Stressors That Contribute To Burnout & Adrenal Dysfunction⁣

I tried to fit as many as I could in this graphic. It's definitely not an all inclusive list, but I think it covers a lot of them. ⁣

I just need to add a circle for deployment 🤣⁣

You may not realize it, but our bodies react the same way to a mental or emotional stressor as they do to an obvious stressor like a car accident or being chased. ⁣

Our brain is alerted that there is a stressor present, this sends off a series of reactions that occur between our hypothalamus and pituitary glands (brain) and eventually talks to our adrenal glands. ⁣

Our adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol gets a bad rap, but it's actually needed for good health. ⁣

The issue is when we have too many stressors (hence the point of this series). We will produce too much cortisol and eventually our body gets burnt out and that feedback loop that makes cortisol in the first place no longer functions properly. ⁣

I share this because I don't think mental and emotional stressors get enough attention. Yes, I help women find imbalances in the body and do testing and lots of nutrition/lifestyle changes, but we also work on mental and emotional stressors while healing.⁣

One of the stressors I want to specifically highlight is constant stimulation. ⁣

Are you always on your phone, computer/working, listening to a podcast, watching TV, aka never giving your brain a break?⁣

This is a good place to start making changes so you can calm your mind and allow for this work to be done. ⁣

Where To Begin:⁣

1️⃣Make a list of all of your mental/emotional stressors. What contributes to your mental stress?⁣

2️⃣Go through and circle the ones you have control over. ⁣

3️⃣Time to chip away! Don't rush this part. Pick 1 stressor and analyze it. Does it comes from a pattern or behavior that you want to change? ⁣

Most of mine do. This is why I took up journaling and yoga.

It helps you rework subconscious patterns and change your life. ⁣

Outside of acne and weight gain, this is probably the most common question I get around getting off the pill:⁣⁣

⁣⁣"What will my energy be like?" ⁣⁣

⁣⁣"Will I be tired?"⁣⁣

⁣⁣And to be honest, I don't know how you will feel because everyone reacts differently. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣I haven't seen any consistencies in the length of time someone takes the pill either. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣Some women take it for 20 years, get off and feel pretty good, while others take it for 2-3, get off, and feel AWFUL. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣
🚨Here's what I do know:⁣⁣

⁣⁣The pill (and any other hormonal BC) is a stressor on the body. The influx of hormones daily causes a stress response. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣Your brain gets alerted to stress, tells the adrenal glands, there's inflammation, and then cortisol is released. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣This happens over and over, and eventually, the brain and adrenal glands don't speak in a functional way. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣This is what leads to post pill fatigue. Along with gut imbalances, possible thyroid issues, and nutrient deficiencies. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣But again, this doesn't last forever, and there are SO many ways to support your body. I have a blog post with tips for transitioning off the pill (link in bio or DM me). ⁣⁣

⁣⁣ also wrote an entire book on this subject called Beyond the Pill 🙌🏼⁣⁣ Its an amazing book…

⁣⁣Regardless, your adrenal glands are going to need some love when you get off. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣Here's how I recommend supporting them:⁣⁣

🔹If you're tired, sleep more and try to get on a consistent schedule. Our hormones LOVE consistency.⁣⁣

🔹Don't feel guilty if you work out less or need to modify your fitness for a bit--it's all in the name of healing and will be worth it. ⁣⁣

🔹Adaptogenic herbs are your best friend! I really like the HPA Axis Daily Maintenance by ⁣⁣

🔹Replenish nutrient deficiencies, particularly vitamin C, magnesium, b vitamins, and zinc. ⁣⁣

🔹Please avoid intermittent fasting and make sure you're feeding yourself enough--this is a HUGE stressor on the body, and like I said, you're already stressed, so don't add fuel to the fire. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣Lastly, be patient with yourself. You're doing a really good thing for your body. It's hard, but it's worth it. ⁣

Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition where the lining of the intestines becomes more permeable than normal. This can allow undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria to leak through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream. While the exact cause of leaky gut is not fully understood, there are several factors that are believed to contribute to its development.

Firstly, poor diet is considered one of the main causes of leaky gut. Consuming a diet high in processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut and lead to inflammation. This inflammation can weaken the intestinal lining and make it more prone to increased permeability.

Secondly, chronic stress is another factor that can contribute to leaky gut. When we experience stress, the body releases stress hormones that can affect the digestive system. Prolonged stress can disrupt the normal functioning of the gut, leading to inflammation and a compromised intestinal barrier.

Lastly, certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics, can also contribute to the development of leaky gut. These medications can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut and cause inflammation, which can weaken the intestinal lining.

It is important to note that leaky gut is a complex condition and its development may be influenced by a combination of factors. Making dietary and lifestyle changes, such as adopting a healthy diet, managing stress levels, and minimizing the use of certain medications, can help support a healthy gut and reduce the risk of leaky gut.
Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition that can be caused by a variety of factors. One of the primary causes is an imbalance in the gut microbiome. The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that play a crucial role in digestion and maintaining a healthy gut lining. When there is an overgrowth of harmful bacteria or a decrease in beneficial bacteria, it can disrupt the integrity of the intestinal wall and lead to leaky gut.

Another common cause of leaky gut is chronic inflammation. Inflammation in the gut can be triggered by a number of factors, including a poor diet, food sensitivities, chronic stress, and environmental toxins. This inflammation can damage the intestinal lining and compromise its ability to act as a protective barrier, allowing harmful substances to leak into the bloodstream.

Certain lifestyle factors can also contribute to the development of leaky gut. For example, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and lack of physical activity can all contribute to gut inflammation and increased intestinal permeability. Additionally, chronic conditions such as autoimmune diseases, celiac disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are often associated with leaky gut.
