My life before "Yes, And" --
I was working as a bank manager, and that meant I often got to handle the difficult customer situations.
I dreaded conflict.
I would absorb the negativity of customer and feel flustered and defeated.
Sometimes, that negative experience would spill over onto other customer interactions because I was so frustrated with what happened and I wasn't able to serve the following customers joyfully or be as present and aware with my team.
I was letting a negative interaction dominate me, and it was because I didn't have the right tool to navigate POSITIVELY and PRODUCTIVELY in the face of conflict.
I would be on the defense ("Yeah, But") in these conversations, because, after all, it wasn't the bank's fault they overdrew their account!
Everything changed when I learned "Yes, And."
By taking improv classes for a fun personal outlet, I learned tools that transformed me professionally.
I learned how to turn "Yeah, But" conflicts into "Yes, And" solutions.
Using YES to acknowledge someone, particularly when they are angry or sharing an opinion different from yours is the first step. It gives them validation for their feelings and let's them know you hear them EVEN when you don't AGREE with them.
AND, is the action to move towards solution. What are the options? How can we WORK TOGETHER to navigate out of this discomfort.
I began using "Yes, And":
- to diffuse heated situations.
- to be more effective in managing my team meetings and communications.
- to be strategic in delegating tasks.
- to increase MY emotional intelligence, one human interaction at a time.
- to finally recognize where conflict was hiding in my life when I hadn't been able to identify it before, even when I felt something was "off."
- to be a more active participant in my own life and career.

Our stories and experiences have forged us into the person we are today. For better or worse! We often attach a lot of meaning to our stories or cling to the pain unintentionally because that is what is normal for us.
We can let it go. We can look back on the biggest challenges or pain points of our lives and transform them into something that can be used to help and heal ourselves.

As a leader in your business and an expert in your industry, it’s invaluable to be able to communicate collaboratively.
If you truly desire to become a change agent for the causes and topics that you care about, you must become a master at stepping into conflict with skills to de-escalate the big feelings and opinions that other people might have around the same topic AND employ strategies that bring people in to want to learn MORE.
Forcing people to change never works. Do YOU want someone to force you to change? Heck no.
Have you ever changed your mind about something once you learned new information or heard a perspective that allowed you to challenge your own position and ask deeper questions? YES!
As speakers and as leaders in business, collaboration and excellence communication skills are everything.
“That’s life.”
That’s life?!? Ick. Those two words are so dismissive and discouraging.
Not long ago, someone I adore told me that something I truly desire is unrealistic and went on to tell me, several times, “that’s life,” while explaining to me why it is unrealistic.
I think that’s the first time I’ve ever actually been told that! That something I am specifically building into my life strategy is unrealistic.
And honestly I keep thinking about it.
“That’s life” is just about the biggest “Yeah, but” there ever was, and that’s not how I live my life.
And I certainly didn’t get to this point and go through what I’ve experienced so far to just lower the intensity and scope of what I desire most from this life.
Sometimes “Yes, And” is a tool we must use to accept something or someone for what/who they are and determine if they are compatible with our trajectory.
You cannot force someone to “Yes, And” with you. When you know how it works you can only lean into it so you can find your fellow “Yes, Anders” (including moments that YOU need to be it) more easily.
If you find yourself feeling limited or like your dreams are unrealistic, let’s have a chat!
I’ve climbed literal and figurative mountains in my life and I’ll tell ya, there is room for more of us at the top together.
Wishing you all the strength and the wisdom to say YES to yourself AND don’t stop until you get what your heart desires.
Even if you are a seasoned leader in your field, you are missing the mark on creating REAL impact within your industry if you are an unpolished (or down right CRAPPY) speaker.
And worse, depending on your position in the company and general rapport you have with your team, you may THINK you are doing great because no one is comfy enough to tell you how you could improve. (Even though they are most certainly talking about it to each other…YIKES.)
I hang around at EVERY event that I speak at to see what other people are doing, and my friends, some of you who are the MOST tenured folks in your business are just absolutely cringe-worthy on stage.
There, I said it.
📣 You have TOO much boring jargon/text/self-serving imagery in your slides.
📣 You talk TOO much about YOUR experience and strong opinions without sharing stories and insights that draw the audience in, thus feeling like the story is about US (which is where impact happens.)
📣 Even when you are talking about yourself, you are MISSING THE GOOD stuff. You are skipping the good parts of your personal stories, feelings, and moments of transformation that made YOU the person you are today.
I could go on.
I think you are getting the point.
If you are an industry expert, why not learn to present for meetings, for big promotions, or as a rep for your company at big conferences in a way that keeps people engaged, activated, and rising in ovation as you leave them transformed into better people than when you stepped onto the stage?
Ugh. I’m tired of trying to say all this nicely.
To make IMPACT and be a true influence for good, you MUST become a great speaker.
And if you can be ready with a polished video of you speaking, headshots that actually look like present-day you, and a kick-@$$ signature message and defined deliverables, you can catapult your credibility and be an agent for change instead of another run-of-the-mill talking head that only inspires more caffiene for your checked-out audience.
Transform those yawns into hell-yeahs.
