Idaho Legal Aid’s Howard Belodoff was in the national spotlight, speaking about the Martin v. Boise case and the rights of unhoused people to not face criminal charges simply because they have nowhere to sleep.
The Supreme Court case that could impact the homeless coast-to-coast In 2018 a federal appeals court decided that Boise, Idaho's camping ban – used to deter the homeless from sleeping on the streets – was "cruel and unusual punishment." Grants Pass, Oregon, has now challenged that argument before the Supreme Court.

Caring about elder abuse is caring about justice for all. As a country, we are committed to ensuring the just treatment of all people, but elder abuse violates this value. A comprehensive review article published in 2015 found the prevalence of elder abuse to be approximately 10%. Elder abuse is an injustice with many consequences for our society, affecting everything from our communities’ public health to our economic resources. Elder abuse is significantly under-identified and underreported. Working together, we can bring awareness to this issue in Idaho and help build the social supports that can prevent this abuse and keep everyone safe as we age.

April 2024 marks the official 23nd anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In 2022, a total of 2,045 nonconsensual s*xual offenses were reported to police. However, this only includes offenses that were known to authorities. Considering the low rate of reporting at the national level (21.5%), the actual occurrence of SA in Idaho is likely much higher.
This April, during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, learn how to take steps to build connected communities and enhance your knowledge of s*xual assault, harassment, and abuse. This year, organizations like the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, are inviting you to explore how to create safe communities where everyone feels safe and supported. We at Idaho Legal Aid ask you to join us in building connected communities that promote equity and respect, as our connections to one another have an impact more significant than just ourselves. Building Connected Communities helps us reduce the likelihood of s*xual abuse, assault, and harassment in our communities. For more information on this, please visit https://www.nsvrc.org/about-saam-2024

This month brings awareness to Teen Dating Violence. It's essential that we support strategies to promote healthy youth development and reduce the incidence and impact of TDV. Dating violence is more common than you may think, especially among teens and young adults: 1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience physical, s*xual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before becoming adults. And nearly half (43%) of U.S. college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors.
Each February, young adults and their loved ones nationwide raise awareness about teen dating violence through Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). This annual, month-long effort focuses on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts. Selected by the love is respect Youth Council, “Love Like That,” illuminates what “that” means regarding healthy and unhealthy relationships. We know that love is more than a feeling; no matter how you define it, it’s essential to ensure you’re on the same page with your partner about the definitions and boundaries of your relationship. Teens and young adults express their love for one another in many ways, which differ from person to person or community. All expressions of love are valid. However, the essential aspect of “Love Like That” calls on us all to create a world of positive actions to express and show healthy love in various ways.

Our Story
Idaho Legal Aid is Idaho’s only statewide provider of free legal services for low-income people who need help when their most basic human needs are at stake. We fight for survivors of domestic violence and children who are hurting and need a safe place to call home; we fight against discrimination; we fight for equality; and we fight to make sure everyone in Idaho has equal access to justice, no matter how little money they have.
Having an attorney protecting your rights is life changing. For many people, especially those who are low-income, legal representation is the difference between having a home and being evicted, escaping from an abusive partner or staying in a dangerous relationship, or being financially stable versus having credit destroyed by identity theft or scams. No one should ever lose their homes, loved ones, or financial security because they can’t afford a lawyer. At Idaho Legal Aid, we do everything we can to make sure people get the legal help they need, when they need it. We fight to make our communities safer, stronger, healthier, and more welcoming. We fight for a better Idaho.
