At a mid-August back-to-school event, Debbie Critchfield looked out over a room full of teachers new to the Idaho Falls School District and lobbed a hard truth: 30 percent of the state’s teachers leave the profession within their first five years of employment.
“If I were a business owner, and every three to five years I was replacing 30 percent of my workforce, what would that do to my productivity?” the Idaho state superintendent of public instruction asked the crowd. “What would that do if I’m trying to make money in my business? Well, you know … education is no different.”
Critchfield stressed that anti-public education forces in Idaho may be vocal, but they don’t represent what’s really happening at the community level.
“What I would say is this: Don’t get too wrapped up in them, because I’m here to tell you that as I go around the state, they care about education in their community, and they’re here to support you,” she said.
Critchfield encouraged educators to try carrying their purpose throughout the ups and downs of the school year.
“You get to be the person that, years from now, when someone is thinking about the success they have, or how well they’re doing, or whatever it is — they got through that one hard day — and your face is going to pop into their mind,” she said. “That’s an incredible gift. It’s an incredible profession.”

I am so excited to have received the endorsement of the Idaho Education Association! As a teacher of 20 years, this endorsement is personal for me. I know what public schools need to make learning exciting for students-and right now our schools just don't have the funding to do what's best for them. I'm tired of our state being last in the nation in per-capita student funding. Idaho kids deserve better, and I will fight for them in the Legislature.

Welcome back, Moscow Education Association! 👏
Every summer, just when many educators take a breather before starting their professional development, Idaho Falls Education Association members start working their community contacts. Their goals: Solicit dozens upon dozens of donations for IFEA’s annual Idaho Education Association Children’s Fund raffle and for back-to-school goodie bags for educators who are new to the district. And Idaho Falls businesses step up.
The money from the IEA Children’s Fund auction benefits Idaho schoolchildren who are facing hardships. From providing warm clothing during the winter to purchasing new glasses for a child with reading difficulty, the fund makes hundreds of donations to help the state’s students. To receive a Children’s Fund donation, a child must be nominated by an IEA member.
The goodie bags help educators bridge the long gap between their start dates and their first paychecks. Teachers received their goodie bags — which are offered to IFEA members and non-members alike — at the association’s annual new educator luncheon featuring a special guest, Idaho State Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield.
The Children’s Fund auction closed this week. To learn more about the fund, visit ieachildrensfund.org/faqs/
