The Beauty Alcove
Formerly Jenny at Salon Shine. I help women achieve beautifully blended, natural blonde highlights and dimensional gray blending. Hello.
I have always had a passion for art and helping others. What better way to incorporate both than being a hairstylist? I love my career and I have been in the industry for 15 years and growing. I bring positive energy to work with me each day. I strive to make my client feel good about themselves on the inside and out. I like to get as much education as I can. I feel there is always something to le
Hey, it’s been a while since I’ve done a get to know me post and I have a few things I’d love to share.
1. Coffee or tea? ☕️ in the am 🫖 in the evening (secret time, I’ve always wanted to grow a tea garden)
2. Favorite color: yellow 💛
3. If I wasn’t a hairstylist I would be working in nutrition
4. Favorite tv show: Schitts Creek
5. I just completed my Hairloss and Scalp Care Certification. I cannot wait to start to help my clients at a deeper level. Stay tuned to all of the awesome things coming to The Beauty Alcove 🧖🏼♀️🪴
Your turn…. Share some tidbits about you
We do things a little differently here at The Beauty Alcove.
It means alot to try to reduce our waste. A few of the ways that we try is with the refill program. That’s right, all shampoo and conditioners are refillable. Bring your empty bottles to your appt and it’s once less bottle in the landfill.
To cut down on plastic water bottles we have a water purifier at the sink. Need to fill your bottle before you leave? Please do so!
Coffee!!! Whoo hoo, but the little pods are a no go. So to reduce the garbage we have refillable coffee pods. I have the best coffee ever for you too, Grumpy Goat. They are my favorite local roaster.
It’s the little things that can make a difference.
How do you cut down at home?
Why does your blonde look different at home than the salon?
It’s all about lighting. If the light bulbs are cool they will look different than warm bulbs and even more your color will look different outside.
Natural light is the best and most accurate.
This is why you can come in the salon and wonder why your hair looks better or worse here than in your bathroom.
You can have highlights and still have healthy hair.
When you come in and we are refreshing your highlights I make sure the technique I use keeps your hair from being damaged.
What can you do to keep your healthy at home (just to name a few)
1. Don’t wash your hair too frequently, but also more than once a week (for scalp health)
2. Use quality shampoo and conditioner
3. Do a deep conditioning hair mask at least every other day.
4. Get a shower filter for the hard water
5. Keep the heat down on your hot tools and use a heat protectant
Please let me know if you have any questions or want recommendations on anything.
I am so excited to share the news with you, I moved!!! With that move comes a new name. Let me introduce The Beauty Alcove. I am renting a suite inside of SalonPlex.
I can't wait to share pictures with you after I finish a few final touches. I am starting to take appts beginning this Tuesday (6/25). All bookings can still be accessed through my website, linked in profile.
Usually they have a shelf life of 2 years.
What happens then?
The preservative begins to break down and your product can go rancid or bad.
If you move had your products longer than 2 years, time to let it go.
If you’ve had it for less than 2 years and you don’t love it maybe give to a friend who will love it.
I love getting rid of stuff!
I can say I am a purger. I feel light and excited when I clean out a drawer or a closet or especially a whole room.😍
It is truly freeing. I think it’s good for your peace and your mental health. Clutter takes up too much space.
So I challenge you, go through your products, if you don’t like them, they don’t work for your style or they are old, get rid of them.
How old are your hair brushes? Are the bristles bent or are the tips breaking? Get rid of them.
Do you use Velcro rollers? Do they not have a stick anymore? Toss em.
Clean it out. You will feel amazing. And…. Don’t fill it back up. Just cause you made room, you don’t have to fill it all.
Want my recommendations for brushes, tools, etc? Check out the shop page on my website. Need product recommendations, let me know. We always own more than we need. I’m here to help.
Her hair is a dream isn’t? Let me share my tips on Jenny’s beautiful style.
We did a partial highlight with a medium golden blonde lowlight. This helps to add some warmth and texture and dimension.
She was pampered with a Hydrate and Repair Steam Treatment. This helps to open the pores on the scalp and the cuticle of the hair. Which allows moisture to pe*****te deeper. The result is hydration, less frizz, and shine. Oh and total softness and silk. 😍
Then I used the Aluram Daily Shampoo, Conditioner, Leave-in Conditioner, Styling Cream, and Shine serum. The curls were achieved with a 1 inch curling iron.
How do you feel with curling your hair? Want my tips and tricks?
Less is more
That is a motto to live by this year.
You don’t need a ton of products.
Let me break it down for you.
You have your Prep products, Styling products, and Finishing products.
My prep includes: shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner, and leave-in conditioner (mine has a heat protectant), a heat protectant.
Styling products: Gel, Mousse, Root Lift, Styling Cream, Curl Cream
Finishing products: Hairspray, Serum/Gloss, Texture Spray, Dry Shampoo, Wax/Paste
You don’t need it all! It just depends what style you are going for. I recommend shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, deep conditioner, a styling aide (that has the hold), and a finish.
For me on the regular I use shampoo, conditioner, leave in, curl mousse and a gloss.
Need help deciding what is best for your hair? Send me a message.
Does your hair need a break from color?
I’m going to assume no.
Why?
If you are one of my clients the integrity of your hair is my number 1 priority.
“But I color my hair every 5 weeks, isn’t that bad or damaging?”
If we are doing a root touchup to cover your grays, I’m applying color on the hair that has grown out (new growth). If we apply a gloss through your ends, it’s actually very conditioning.
If we are doing highlights, I am also applying the lightener to your new growth. I will not apply that over previously lightened blonde (that can cause damage).
So it’s ok to color every 4-8 weeks. If I think your hair is getting damaged or can’t handle the color that’s something we will talk about.
Head to my website to schedule your color today and feel confident that your hair will be well taken care of.
Now that you’re curious about dry shampoo, let me show you how to use it.
I love using it on day 2 or day 3 hair. However, some women do best using it on day 1. It’s great if you need a little texture for your hair. (Hair too silky)
I love the smell of the Aluram Dry Shampoo, and it doesn’t have a lot of build up to it. (What I prefer)
Grab some at your next appointment or head to my bio and click the shop page on my website.
You don't have to cover up your grays anymore.
When I first started doing hair (18 years ago) nobody was embracing their gray hair. Those were the days that you needed those roots covered for every occasion.
Fast forward to the pandemic and more women than ever came out of it embracing their grays. I cannot tell you how many women let their hair grow out and rocked those silver strands.
Heck, that’s an awesome option. But maybe you’re not quite there yet, and that’s cool too. There’s no rules when it comes to your hair, because its all about what you want and what you love and what feels good to YOU!
What do you do when you aren’t ready to go completely natural but also don’t want the upkeep or outgrowth of touching up your roots. Blend your grays!
I LOVE this 😍 I think it’s such a beautiful and fun option. Check out Jane’s gorgeous hair. The before picture is 6.5 weeks of outgrowth (and if she wanted she could have gone longer), those roots aren’t bad, am I right?
The after pic is adding in a light honey blonde and a shade darker for a lowlight and incorporating her natural white as one of her colors. This gives dimension, texture, warmth, and a soft line of outgrowth.
Wonder if this is an option for you, send me a message and lets chat.
Can I share a secret?
I must confess, I used to be someone who washed my hair every single day.
I know 😬
Now I plan my hair washing on my workout schedule. 3 days a week, it matches up with my 2 cardio days and 1 other. So I’m almost every other day.
It wasn’t easy in the beginning, my hair would be greasy ½ way through day 2. I never used dry shampoo, I thought they were only for hospital stays (that was the stigma years ago)
Dry shampoo is my new best friend. However, I still don’t like the feel on my scalp of going more that 3 days. I do think that you need to wash at least 2 times a week for scalp care.
You don't want to clog your pores. You do want to rinse sweat, dirt, hair products, etc off of your scalp. If you don’t more problems can pop up.
Do you wash daily? Need tips to try to convert?
Look what just arrived!!!!!
I am so excited that Aluram has launched a Root Boost Spray! I LOVE it!!!
I’ve been trying it out in the salon this last week and it is so good. It works amazing and it smells like vacation. Coconut 🥥 anyone?
2 ingredients that make this product like no other:
🌴Rice Protein: helps bind moisture, which contributes to shiny hair with buildable volume
🌴Sea Kelp: Conditions the scalp and helps nourish hair follicles
Ready to add some healthy volume to your hair? Comment boost below and I will get you on my pre-order today.
Is washing your hair everyday bad?
It can be and let me share why.
💦It can be very drying to your hair because you are constantly removing your natural oil. (that’s the most moisturizing)
💦Your color will fade faster
💦It can be very drying to scalp. (healthy scalp=healthy hair)
💦It can make your hair more oily, because you are signaling to your body that it needs to create more oil.
It’s really not necessary. I suggest washing every 2-3 days.
The benefits of not washing daily:
💦Extra time for you in the morning
💦Get to try out different hairstyles since you’re not blow drying
💦Your investment (your color) will last longer
💦Your hair will be less damaged and have more moisture
Treat your hair this year and give it a break. Try dry shampoo for your non-washing days and play around with different ways to style it.
Want volume the easy way?
No fuss volume!
Girl a dream come true. I freaking love Velcro rollers and this is how I use them.
Sick of spending forever with the round brush, try Velcro rollers. Need some? Link in my bio
Tips:
1. 100% dry
2. Over direct the roller
3. Don’t take sections bigger than roller width
4. Add more heat on low
It starts from the inside
I have always been interested in learning more about health. I think the human body is fascinating. It’s amazing how interconnected everything is.
My interest really started from the years of stomach issues. There wasn’t a day that would go by that I didn’t have an upset stomach. I lived and survived on Pepto Bismol. Silver lining- brought my interest into nutrition.
Nutrition is so important when comes to our hair too. If we’re not getting a variety of food or we’re not absorbing nutrients properly that can great affect our hair. You could have dry, brittle hair, or even hair loss.
This is just one aspect of health to look into. I am so excited to really focus this year on learning more about scalp and hair health and what we can do to improve our overall health. Sometimes your hair or skin can be the sign for some thing going on internally.
Stay tuned as I share more on having healthy hair, a healthy scalp and overall health tips.
What if you could have it all?
✨Texture
✨Dimension
✨Shine
✨Soft, silky hair
With a natural grow out? Would want it?
That’s exactly what Julia got here. We touched up her highlights, added a lowlite close to her natural level, and toned her hair.
Texture and dimension were achieved through the highlight and lowlite. The shine and soft, silkiness were achieved with the toner. And all of it together is what’s going to give her a soft, natural grow out.
Now it’s your turn. You can have it all too. Head to my website and let’s get your journey started.
Your hair needs steam
What? That sounds crazy, am I right?
A steam conditioning treatment has so many benefits.
Let’s name a few:
🌿 Deep Moisture- the steam will open the cuticle of your hair and allow the deep conditioning mask go deeper in your hair.
🌿 Open the pores on your scalp
🌿 Improve elasticity of the hair- making it stronger
🌿 Help to reduce frizz- more moisture =leas frizz
For the month of January and February my Hydrate and Repair steam mask treatment will be on special. You can add this to any other hair service.
Let’s keep your resolution going and continue getting healthier. Your matters too.
Want healthy hair? My 7 tips how
Ok let’s talk about preventing damage.
1. Keep your hot tools to a low-medium heat. We've probably all heard, "you're not baking a cake, keep it low" So true, you don't need it up to 425.
2. Always use a heat protection before even blowdrying.
3. Use a deep conditioner 1-2x a month. Make a spa day out of it.
4. Make sure your hair is getting adequate moisture.
5. Don't brush wet hair, unless it's with a wet brush. Still be gentle.
6. Get regular trims, you don't want those split ends to split further up the strand.
7. Try heatless styles to give your hair a break.
Let’s get your healthy hair goal off to a good start. Schedule your appt today. Click the link in my bio
Your health matters to me too
I won't just bring any products into the salon.
I make sure they pass the check.
🌱Vegan
🌱Cruelty-free
🌱Sustainable/Environemntally friendly
🌱Clean- I make sure that it is low in toxic ingredients and has the performance to back it
Trust me when I say, I won't just use anything. I want to protect your health, my health, the environment and the animals.
I can tell you I was shocked when I learned that the hair products you could buy at the store weren’t regulated. And how many toxic ingredients are in our products we put on our bodies every day.
So at your next appointment, let’s chat about what you are using.
What's your word for 2024?
Happy New Year and welcome to 2024! I feel like this is going to be the most amazing year ever! I am so excited for the goals I have set for myself this year.
I find that each year I like to choose a word to focus on, and this year is SIMPLICITY and ALIGNMENT. I want to slow down, reduce my stress, take time for the things and people I love and to me that would mean to simplify. I also want to feel aligned in my personal and professional life. So that I feel at peace and like everything is flowing and I am living at my highest purpose.
What is your word for 2024? How do you want to feel? Or what do you need to focus on to hit your goal? I just sent out my newsletter for January where I shared some of my tips to hit your New Years resolution. DM and I'll send it your way.
Otherwise, comment your word below.
Your gray shows so quickly!
This is so true for those that have darker hair. It can feel like black and white, right?
And…. It’s always on the hairline or your part. Super annoying.
I just want to share how we changed up Steph’s color to help soften the growth.
We added very natural highlights. Now her color is slightly lighter than when she came in and we added some brightness and variation around her face and hairline.
Now when her hair grows out it won’t feel like such a contrast for her grays because they will blend into the highlight.
Are you ready to stop covering your gray and ready to blend. Schedule your appt today. I recommend a partial or a full highlight depending on your end goals.
Your color will look different curly vs straight.
This is one reason you see a lot of post online with curly hair, it shows off more dimension. Meaning it can make the different colors in your hair pop more.
This is a perfect example. Not saying one is more gorgeous than the other.
Karlene wanted to be able to go a little longer between appts so we put a lowlight in her hair and softened her outgrowth of blonde.
Head to my website to schedule your appt today. We can chat about what your hair goals are.
I used to be a skeptic of toners. I didn't really see the value in them and I thought they weren't necessary.
I love highlighting and creating natural looking blondes. I've been very lucky over the years that most of the time, my highlights looked gorgeous without toning. Well thank goodness for you, I use my own hair as a guinea pig a lot of times.
And guess what, after every highlight, I tone my hair. 90% of the time I don't add any color to it and I go for shine. This is one service that I call a shine treatment. It's created using my semi color line, but there is no color pigment. So what's the point?
It creates so much shine by sealing down the cuticle of my hair and which helps add moisture and smoothness.
This last time I wanted some more warmth (golden tones) added to my hair for winter so I did a true toner and shifted the tone.
I'll never go back. I see so much benefit with my hair now and it feels softer. Bonus it last for up to 24 shampoos.
Let's chat at your next appointment and see if a toner or just a shine treatment is best for your hair.
The most wonderful time of the year.
However, do you ever feel like this time of year is giving your all to others?
I want you to take your time at Salon Shine for you. Let Salon Shine still be your place to relax, no matter what time of year it is. Sit back relax, catch up on the latest People magazine, enjoy a coffee/tea, sparkling water, wine, or local craft beer.
Enjoy a scalp massage at the shampoo bowl.💆🏼♀️ As well as styling tips to make your mornings much smoother.
Want to relax even more? With every conditioning treatment, not only does your hair get some love, you get an even longer scalp massage with a hot towel under your neck as well as over your hair.
Now is the time for you .
Is your blonde too bright, grayish, or ashy?
It's time to make your blonde look more natural. You will still schedule a full or partial (depends if you like the bottom back lightened then you want full) highlight, but during your consultation we will talk about all of your concerns.
My solution is to add a very soft buttery blonde to create a little warmth. This will keep your blonde from getting too ashy or grayish or too bright. (ever feel like it "glows" in photos)
Did you know it will also add some texture and dimension.
Just to note, if you use purple shampoo, it can also create an ashy/grayish color. We will discuss this more later.
Schedule your appt today to add your soft buttery, natural blondes to your highlights.
Just cause you're going gray, you don't have to cover it.
Blend it!
I love blending gray hair. Why?
It looks more natural. And, your upkeep is less.
You would schedule either a full or a partial highlight (depends on your cut, but do you want the bottom back colored too, that's a full)
Now I will choose 2-3 colors to foil through your hair. By doing this we are incorporating your gray or white as one of your colors. So you don't have to be ashamed or embarrassed you have grays, you can embrace them and enhance them.
This takes your up keep from 4-6 weeks with a root touch up, covering your grays, to 6-10 weeks where we blend your gray. Your out growth line will be much softer and not a harsh straight line down your part.
Ready to blend your gray? Schedule your appointment today. Click my website in my bio.
