We love all of our volunteers!❤️
This month, our featured volunteer is Arnie Nelson. He volunteers in Medical Oncology at the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center where he has served since the Spring of 2023.
He enjoys talking with patients and family members and providing an array of “creature comforts” such as coffee, ☕ sandwiches, snacks, and warm blankets. 🫶
Arnie has prior experience working at medical settings in Winston-Salem for some 50 years including many years at Forsyth Medical Center (Rehabilitation and Psychiatry) and a private clinical practice of psychology. Involvement in the Cancer Center seems to be a natural extension of his experiences and interests and allows him to make a contribution to the community.
He retired last year from clinical practice and has been a volunteer in Watauga County for about 10 years through AARP tax counseling and as a SHIIP counselor (Medicare).
Arnie is married and has had a home in Watauga County for more than 30 years. He and his wife have one son who is an App State graduate. He also enjoys doing simple woodworking and performing a wide range of home repairs and landscaping chores.
Volunteers play an integral role in helping our patients, visitors, and staff. They serve in a variety of areas throughout the healthcare system. If you’re interested in volunteering at UNC Health Appalachian in any of our facilities, please complete an application here 👉 https://apprhs.org/volunteer/

We are happy to recognize Dan Greenfield as our featured volunteer for May.
Dan has volunteered at Appalachian Regional Healthcare System for the past 27 years. He serves in the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center where he cleans areas after a patient leaves. He also provides patients and visitors with food and beverages during treatments. In the Cardiac Unit, he does clerical work or anything else the staff needs.
He says what he loves most about volunteering at ARHS, “is the interaction with this fantastic staff and hopefully aiding those who come here seeking help.”
Dan also delivers meals for the Watauga County Project on Aging, which he has been doing for 34 years. He actively participates with community theatres in Boone, Lenoir and the Hickory areas.
Before moving to Boone in 1988, he was a restauranteur.
He says he volunteers because, “I have had a blessed life and God has given me the opportunity to say ‘thank you!’ And it sure is rewarding to have a worthy purpose at this stage of my life.”
There are volunteering opportunities available across ARHS. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit: apprhs.org/volunteer
