The door knocker is more that just a tool to completely freak out Scrooge by turning into Marley in “The Christmas Carol”. (or if you’re more familiar, Goofy’s head)

The first recorded door knocker is in Ancient Greece where they considered it rude to enter a dwelling without warning. Some even say that they were used as a form of communication. Different knock patterns conveyed messges to those inside the house (kind of like a rudimentary form of texting).

Adopting the Greek custom the Romans spread the use of the door knock into the far reaches of their empire.

Although the original shape of the knocker was just a ring made with cast iron, they were eventually made out of brass and started their journey toward the more artistic versions that we see today. They could be used to commuicate a message about, tastes, profession and even relious beliefs.

From the English Lion to the Chinese Dragon, these beauitful peices of art can be found all over the world.

Have you met Jen Milligan from Milligan Design Group? We are proud to partner with Jen and MDG on her projects whether it be residential and/or commercial. Based out of New England she works on projects all over the US, including Florida, California and Montana.

The first kitchen was finished with the Top K***s Brookline and it is a stunning finish.

The second look was completed with the Baldwin Hardware Hollywood Hill cabinet collection.
