A lot of things can hurt your credit score, the main things are (in order of importance of avoiding these things):
1. Late payments
2. Over-using your credit cards (having credit card balances of more than 10% of your credit line amounts, for example, borrowing over $100 using your credit cards when your credit cards have a total credit line limit of $1000)
3. Having credit accounts which are less than 9 years old on your credit report
4. Having less than 21 accounts on your credit report or having less than 3 types of accounts on your credit report (the types of accounts are installment loans, credit lines, and credit cards)
5. Having more than one hard inquiry on your credit report in the last 12 months, meaning, having your credit report show that you applied for at least one credit account in the past 12 months.
