Just after 4:00 am this morning Sept. 1st 2024, the Groton Fire Department was dispatched to 368 Main St. for a reported structure fire. This address is the location of the Herb Lyceum. First arriving crews arrived to find heavy fire which had vented through the roof and the structure was fully involved. The roof of the structure had already suffered a partial collapse and the decision was made by command to operate in a defensive mode.
The fire was extinguished using multiple handlines off of Groton's Engine 3 as well as the master stream from Groton's Ladder 1. Mutual Aid fire companies from Ayer Fire Department, Pepperell Fire Department, Littleton Fire Department, Westford Fire Department, and Devens Fire Department provided support to help extinguish the fire. Lunenburg Fire Department provided ALS coverage on scene in the event that medical attention were to be needed. Shirley MA Fire Department and Dunstable Fire Rescue provided station coverage for the Town of Groton during the incident. The Groton Police Department assisted by controlling traffic allowing all fire crews un-impeded access to the area.
Mutual Aid fire companies were released back to their respective towns beginning around 7:00 am. Groton Fire crews remained on scene for several hours completing overhaul operations and checking for hot spots. The Fire Chief, the Groton Engine 3 crew and a fire investigation team from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Fire Marshal's Office remained on scene until approximately 11:00 am. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

It is with great sadness that I must report the line of duty death of New Bedford Firefighter Matthew E. Forand. Preliminary information suggests that Matt suffered a medical emergency and passed away during the night while on duty at Fire Station 9.
On behalf of the New Bedford Fire Department and all our members, I want to express our most heartfelt condolences to Matt’s family and loved ones, especially his two children. I also want to pledge the Department’s support for them in a time of sadness. This is an unspeakable loss for them, for his brother and sister firefighters, and for our community.
Matt, 45 years old, completed the New Bedford Firefighting Academy in 2006. He was most recently assigned to Engine Co. 9 and was recognized repeatedly for his commitment to the residents of New Bedford. He received the Medal of Valor at the 2014 Firefighter of the Year Awards for rescuing an unconscious occupant from the second floor of a burning building on Dartmouth Street. He also received a Unit Citation as a member of Engine Co. 6 for his efforts battling the Royal Crown Apartment fire in March 2023.
Information on the services will be announced when it becomes available. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this time.
Respectfully,
Scott Kruger

There is no need to be alarmed if you see several of our firefighters running on the Squannacook River Rail Trail in full fire gear during the months of August and September. These firefighters are training for the memorial run of the Tunnell to Towers 5K Run.
The 5K Run pays homage to the 343 FDNY firefighters, law enforcement officers and thousands of civilians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This event symbolizes the final footsteps of Stephen Siller, FDNY Firefighter - Squad 1 from the foot of the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers in New York City on September 29th.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a charitable organization founded in tribute to New York Fire Department firefighter Stephen Siller, who was killed on September 11, 2001, during the September 11 attacks.
