We love these first-time user videos because we get to witness people doing something they have never been able to do before. Oftentimes, they aren't even aware of how life-changing this newfound ability can be.

In the case of this young girl, she has been missing her hand since birth and has been getting by without a prosthesis to date. As she got older and more independent, she started recognizing some of the limitations the absence of her hand presented and decided it was time to explore a prosthesis. And judging by the smile at the end of the video, she is glad she did!

Keep in mind that these impromptu stack challenges introduce the patient to the basic function of the hand. This Ossur i-Limb Ultra hand has significantly more capability, including preprogrammed grip patterns that the patient can utilize with some practice to perform many everyday activities effortlessly.

Cindy, who is missing all of the fingers on her right hand, received her very first i-Digits partial hand prosthesis, and was kind enough to put on an impromptu demonstration for us. As she left her appointment we put her on the spot to see how adept she was at stacking cups! She handled the challenge like a champ and successfully completed the task. Make no mistake- this is not an easy feat, especially after only having worn the new prosthesis for a couple of minutes.

Cups were what we had around, but you can imagine how incredibly life changing it is to go from not being able to grasp anything, to being able to use a knife, fork, toothbrush, or keyboard for example.

As she becomes accustomed to the new prosthesis and with more practice she will be even quicker. Who knows, maybe we'll see her out there on the cup stacking tournament circuit!

As a quadrilateral amputee (missing both legs and both hands) Lawrence has considerable challenges when it comes to performing even the smallest tasks. Despite these challenges, with his positive attitude and new i-Limb hands, he is able to open up considerable opportunities to improve his independence and lifestyle.

In this video you can see him marvel at his new found ability to put on his own hat, open and use a plastic-capped water bottle, sign his name, and more! These were tasks he picked up within minutes of receiving his new hands. With additional practice and therapy he will continue to gain vastly more skills- and with each new skill the ability to incrementally improve his life. Most people think losing a limb at war or due to trauma is the most common cause of amputations. Improper blood flow, also known as vascular insufficiency, often caused by chronic health conditions such as diabetes is a much more common cause of amputations.

Limb loss affects many different individuals across many walks of life. Every individual seeks different capabilities out of their prosthesis. We've done many posts about patients who use prostheses to run, or who have adorned them with self-expressive cosmetic covers; however, this is just a small window into the varied lifestyles of the limb loss community. David Chalmers is one of those patients whose prosthetic needs are truly unique because of his incredible talent. David is one of the three players of the E.M. Skinner Organ at the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans, MA. If you look closely in the picture, you can see that David wears a left below-the-knee prosthesis. The prosthesis in the picture is specially aligned so that the foot is positioned appropriately for David to play the organ pedals.

In order to get the correct alignment, Paul Martino C.P. (David's prosthetist) traveled to the Cape to align the prosthesis while David was playing. While Paul was there, David was gracious enough to give him a tour of the Church and some stats about the organ. For instance- the organ was just completed last year and has just under twelve thousand pipes!

To read more about the story of this incredible organ visit their website: https://www.churchofthetransfiguration.org/organ/

It's too late for these guys, but don't be afraid to call us with any questions or concerns about your prosthesis. Whether you're a new amputee or one of the many patients we have known for decades, we'd love to hear from you. We know that for new amputees the process can be scary but the sooner you involve a prosthetist increase the likelihood of a positive and successful outcome. And for those existing patients, we haven't seen in a while- it's always a good idea to get your prosthesis checked regularly to ensure it is functioning properly.

Which Amputee Halloween Costume Do You Like Best?
We love when our patient's express themselves through their prostheses. Most of the time this is with custom socket designs or custom fairings, which we have featured in previous posts. However, Halloween opens up many opportunities that aren't available to those outside of the limb loss community. Check out some of the super creative costumes that these amputees came up with, and remember to tell us which one you think is best!
