Genetics is out. Epigenetics is in (after nearly 30 years of resistance from the scientific community who called it pseudoscience - a result of cognitive rigidity). Now that we have the understanding (and scientific evidence) that genetic activity is dictated by our behavior and environmental factors, and that thoughts, behaviors, and experience physically build and alter our brain architecture, and also the chemistry of our blood which acts as a culture medium to our cells, is there any other form of medicine other than BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE?
How Your Mind Shapes Your Brain - The Best Brain Possible Every minute of every day, you are literally shaping your brain, through what's called experience-dependent neuroplasticity.

Today Carolyn Schatzel is in the spotlight! She is the founder and owner of Mindful Bodies Massage. Carolyn is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Reiki Healer with more than 1100 hours of education and training! She has trained in numerous modalities and holds a deep understanding of the human condition, anatomy, and physiology.
Carolyn was born and raised in MA. From a very young age, she had a deep passion and curiosity for the arts, sciences, and spirituality. An avid dancer, sculptor, and painter, Carolyn completed a BFA before relocating to Southern CA. There, she was able to integrate her intuitive and creative tendencies, developed through her art education, with her fascination with the powerful human ability to heal the mind, body, and soul, and find meaning in life. Carolyn trained with chiropractors, osteopaths, physical therapists, personal trainers, experts in Traditional Chinese medicine, and energy healers, and is now earning a master’s degree in holistic mental health counseling. She currently lives in Dorchester and is balancing being a mother to 11-year-old twins with running her private bodywork practice. Carolyn also dedicates her time practicing and promoting whole-body health and wellness via an active lifestyle, an integrated approach to self-care, plant-based eating, and expanding her knowledge through research and continued education.
When asked about the importance of supporting women-owned businesses and how she inspires women and girls in her community, Carolyn shared:
“I believe that women are the world’s true visionaries and nurturers. Whatever endeavors women take on, they approach them with industriousness, intuition, creativity, commitment, and an openness to learn and grow. Witnessing this is inspirational. Supporting women in their business ventures helps to create a world where this beautiful feminine energy can be utilized, encouraged, and inspire our communities. I aim to inspire the women and girls in my community by always striving to make meaningful connections with others, share my personal story of healing, and empowering people to know they have the innate ability to heal and feel whole in their mind, body, and soul.”
Carolyn, we’re deeply inspired by your commitment to helping women and girls find healing, wholeness, and inspiration through your work! MAPA’s President & CEO, Drita Protopapa, met Carolyn a few months ago and quickly understood Carolyn’s ability to help and heal others, especially women! So much so, that she became a client of hers! Kudos for your incredible ability to understand and work with the human body and spirit!
During such traumatizing times as we are living through right now, it’s so helpful to understand how our body holds onto the experiences and stores them, most often outside of our conscious awareness. The long-term mental, emotional, and physical effects of unreleased trauma can be devastating to our wellbeing and health. The first step is to make the connection 💗
Touch and trauma by Rachel Fairweather for Massage World Magazine Clearly, experience of severe and repeated trauma can have extreme effects on not just our emotional health but our physical health too. Prolonged or extreme stress has been linked with a host of common illnesses and chronic pain conditions including headaches, back pain, RSI, digestive problems, lo...
Learning so much additional wisdom through my trauma courses and putting the pieces together in terms of human physiology, neurobiology, the evolutionary stress response, our societal norm of emotional and physical disconnection in healthcare, and the effects of trauma. Literally, physical caring touch allows our bodies to know we are “wanted” which signals our physiology into a cascade of self-regulating, self-protecting, and survival-ensuring processes. Massage therapy can be a literal life saver!
“This correlation of the change in the body and brain chemistry, along with reported improvements in anxiety, depression and pain for those undergoing Massage Therapy as part of their trauma, is wide spread. Whether someone is recovering from experiencing a traumatic event or has been diagnosed with PTSD, Massage Therapy can be instrumental in helping Guests overcome their symptoms.”

Think about it. Feel it. How sick are we as a nation, as a people? Before Covid there was already a dreadful, relentless epidemic of chronic illness, skyrocketing mental illness, disability, and for the third year in a row the life expectancy of Americans for the first time in history is declining. We took a wrong turn somewhere. Technology can’t save us from taking care of ourselves. Thousands of years of intuition, connection to nature, and medicine replaced by EuroAmerican ethnocentric allopathic medicine. The crazy thing is that allopathic medicine is actually “alternative medicine,” despite the narrative which states otherwise. Can we reconnect to what we’ve lost?
Our bodies are biologically designed to move, to stretch, to exert, to express the energy we carry and create. When we inhibit this we become stagnant and pain signals imbalance. Remember to move to live, and live to thrive.
The head brain is interpreting signals from the heart brain more often than the other way around. Interesting that mainstream psychology and psychopharm are so head focused. When we work body-level-up and shift the rhythms of the heart, brain function and physiological responses are influenced and improved.

Our mind is experience, emotion, and information embodied in energetic form. To release is to move that energy out and forward and to keep our lifeforce flowing as it is meant to be.

The evidence continues to mount connecting the nervous system, stress, and chronic illness. Taking that time out to quiet the mind, stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, and integrate into our embodied senses supports the entire system in healing.

So much of our neuromuscular connection is unconscious. Stay mindful and put your mind in the muscle to release that tension
This disconnect is at the root of the chronic illness epidemic in the western world. The mind is the body, the body is the mind ❤️
When given the proper support the body heals itself. Move, hydrate, eat plants, get fresh air, connect with people, recover and restore. Much of what we do, and don’t do, in the modern world disturbs this support.
If you’re dealing with aches and pains or just not feeling youthful in your body, consider the huge impact diet has on health. The food you eat literally becomes your cells and tissues. Consuming animal products regularly damages the endothelial lining of blood vessels and creates chronic inflammation. Plant-based eating supports optimal health so you can feel the way you and your body deserve to feel.
