Ever wondered if your mindset can actually change your health? You might be surprised! 🤯 A fascinating study by Langer & Crum in 2007 sheds some light on this topic. Dubbed the "Hotel Maid Study," it looked into how perceiving daily tasks as a form of exercise impacts our health. Spoiler alert: The results were mind-blowing! 🌟

So, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty! This study involved 84 hardworking housekeepers. Half of them were told that their daily work (you know, scrubbing floors and making beds) was actually burning calories and giving them a workout. 🏋️‍♀️ The other half were left in the dark, blissfully unaware. Fast forward four weeks, and BAM! The group informed about their “exercise” routine saw improvements in their weight, blood pressure, and body fat without changing a single thing about their actual behavior. Functional Movement with Ellie & Richie part 4: “Rockette Kicks”

These excercises increase your heart rate while working on balancing on one leg, necessary for proper gait when walking. Note that I’ll cue the standing leg much more than the gesture leg. The standing leg is where the real work and reward happens!

Ellie and Richie are working their hips, legs and core with these simple movements. Again, we added song to increase brain and memory activity and, of course, add more joy to the workout!

I’m back with Ellie and Richie to work on strength and mobility. These exercises go far to help seniors become more confident walkers. Again, I’m using a basic walking stick with them and we are on rocking chairs. If you don’t have a rocking chair these exercises can be modified.

Do these fun movements with the seniors in your life. Add a song to enhance the rhythm, brain work and overall joy of movement. Dogs preferred, but not necessary.

Just don’t fall. (Easier said then done).

Falls can be devastating for senior citizens and their families. And while they can’t always be prevented, improving one’s balance, muscle strength and functional mobility will go far in lessening the likelihood and severity of a fall.

I love teaching seniors life-changing exercises that feel like play. I work with clients at every level to build their physical strength through fun, manageable exercises and movements.

For senior citizens, balance is vitally important. Improving one’s balance helps to prevent falls, avoid atrophying muscles and increase lung capacity.

In this clip, I work on balance with my Mom and Uncle at their memory care facility. Walking sticks are a useful addition to their routines to help keep their bodies upright and build muscle strength.
