Audry Chivanga is a Class of 2023 Millennium Fellow studying at the African Leadership University. She grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe where she says she witnessed multiple social problems, from an incredibly poor healthcare system to widespread poverty. Living through these issues ignited something in her, sparking her passion for creating local solutions. 💡

As a Mastercard scholar and now a Millennium Fellow, Audry founded the African Innovative Community, a platform connecting young talents across Africa to collaboratively tackle local problems. With a network of
200-250 young innovators, they address issues such as long queues in African hospitals, fostering collaboration and innovation.

Ariel Zhao, a Class of 2021 Fellowship alum, is currently serving as a student liaison at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. In May 2024, Ariel helped organize an event titled “Youth Empowerment and Shaping the Future of Public Health and Sustainable Development,” a critical conversation on global health challenges, youth advocacy, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The session brought together a panel of experts, including our Executive Director Sam Vaghar; Dr. Lia Tadesse, former Ethiopian health minister; Mme. Rosine Sori-Coulibaly, former minister of Economy, Finance, and Development in Burkina Faso; and Dr. Awa Coll Seck, former minister of health in Senegal. Ariel wrote an insightful article reflecting on the event and the lessons imparted.

Grecia Tello Sosa is a Class of 2023 Millennium Fellow pursuing Business Innovation  at the University of Monterrey ( ). Her project,Tema, offers environmental pollution management services, including air pollution studies, as well as water and soil contamination.

Together with her team, the project has installed 25 monitoring systems across Nuevo León, contributing to the government’s efforts to track air quality in various areas and assess its impact on public health.

Applications to the 10th Millennium Oceans Prize officially close on June 15th, 2024.

Only 0.76% of all global climate and environmental funding goes to youth-led initiatives. If you care about the planet and our water sources this is a chance to kickstart your project by way of a $5,000 grant, plus a year of mentorship and support.

The 10th Millennium Oceans Prize applications close today. University students worldwide still have time to submit. The Oceans prize gives a $5,000 grant to students leading a campaign that advances SDG 14 Life Below Water and promises to conserve global or local water sources.

There’s a million reasons why young people should care about the Oceans. Here’s a few:

1. According to the ClimateWorks Foundation, young people are only receiving 0.76% of climate funding. The Oceans prize will give you the seed funding you need to get your campaign off the ground.
2. According to OurWorldinData, there are 33 billion pounds of plastics entering the marine environment every year. There has never been a more important time to take action.

Deogratius Delafrique is a Class of 2023 Millennium Fellow. He served as Campus Director for his University of Mbarara cohort.

His Fellowship project involved an effort to create an innovative Antiseptic Herbal Wound Spray derived from locally sourced raw medicinal plants. His work as a Fellow led to national recognition from various healthcare players in Uganda, including receiving a ‘Heroes in Health Award’ in the ‘Students Innovation Award; category. 🎊

Meet the Millennium Fellows from Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone. They are advancing SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities through their Millennium Fellowship project.

Their Project, 'My Community My Responsibility' is about tackling the Waste Management and Sanitation issues in urban areas in Sierra Leone. Throughout the Fellowship they have conducted multiple cleaning drives, awareness seasions through flyers, sensitization videos and radio stations to tackle waste management, sanitation and create platforms to discuss about the responsibilities of citizens, state and non state actors in ensuring sustainability across urban spaces.

“EcoRevive: A Green Tomorrow” a transformative initiative undertaken by the Millennium Fellows Class of 2023 at the University of Sargodha, is a beacon of collaborative efforts directed towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal SDG13 – Climate Action.
At the heart of “EcoRevive: A Green Tomorrow” lies a mission to raise awareness about the pressing issue of climate change. Recognizing the global significance of SDG #13, the team orchestrated various activities to engage the university community and beyond. The project aligns with the broader agenda of fostering environmental consciousness and encouraging sustainable practices. With its roots firmly planted in the University of Sargodha, EcoRevive endeavors to cultivate a generation of responsible citizens attuned to the challenges posed by climate change.

Meet Michał Bartler, an Emerging Technologist and a Millennium Fellow from University College London, UK.🇬🇧

He and his team are working on a predictive technology for substance use and addiction treatment. By utilizing medical data and machine learning, they are predicting relapse risk and providing insights for personalized substance use treatment.📊

There are currently 35 million people with a Substance Use Disorder diagnosis, and 40-60% of them relapse within the year of receiving treatment.

‘Substanceless’ has already conducted interviews with patients from the UK, US and Poland, and aims to test its MVP in a clinic within the next three months.
