On this date in 1851, Herman Melville published the epic MOBY DICK in the United States — it had come out a month earlier in England. I always think of MOBY DICK as one of the archetypal Massachusetts novels, but I didn't know that the great white whale was based on a real whale called "Mocha Dick" that destroyed at least 20 whaling ships off the coast of Chile.
