Happy MassArt Fashion Week and good luck to those showcasing their designs on Saturday!
Founded in 1907, MassArt’s fashion department is one of the oldest in the country. It has supported and/or taught notable designers such as Alfred Fiandaca, Shirley Willett, and Erin Robertson (winner of Season 15 of Project Runway!).
In 1907, the fashion department focused on teaching students how to design wallpaper, textiles, and costumes, but throughout the first half of the 20th century, expanded significantly. The department’s curriculum grew, adding courses on costume modeling (historic costuming) (1915), retail trade (1926), costume illustration (1928), and proving practice (1941), among others, turning into what is today the fashion design department.
If interested in the fashion department, you can watch the most recent fashion shows and learn more about fashion at MassArt on our website!
Pictured above are photographs from the 1930s-1960s featuring the fashion designers and models of MassArt.

Women’s History Month Highlight: Frances Euphemia Thompson (class of 1923 and 1936)!
Frances, a young girl from Tennessee, would attend Massachusetts Normal Art School (MassArt) and graduate with a diploma in Elementary Teaching and Supervision. She would subsequently return for her Bachelor’s degree, graduating in 1936 and, in 1945, earn her Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Radcliffe College (Harvard University). In addition to being a talented artist in her own right, Frances was a dedicated educator and influenced educational policy for the better in the segregated South.
Following her 1936 graduation from the Massachusetts College of Art, her thesis would be utilized by the Tennessee Department of Education in 1943 and published in “Art in the Elementary Schools: A Manual for Teachers” to help teachers create art programs in segregated schools. Throughout her life, Frances dedicated just under 50 years to bringing art instruction into the segregated black schools of rural Tennessee.

If High School Musical (2006) taught us anything, it would be that basketball players could also be performing artists simultaneously. This same phenomena was true on MassArt’s campus as well. While sports may not be the first thing to come to mind when you think of an art school, it is nonetheless a part of our history! So, with March Madness beginning tonight, we want to showcase our champion basketball team (eventually called the Easelmen in the 1980s) and the history of basketball at MassArt!
Basketball first began on campus as a part of the Girls’ Athletic Club in the 1920s. Eventually, an official men's team was formed in 1925 when they were given uniforms and a practice space in a gymnasium. Throughout the first decades of the 20th century, the MassArt basketball team would play games against nearby schools like Brown University, Northeastern University, Salem Normal, and others. The archives even has their trophy from 1962 (third picture)!
If you’re interested in learning more about the MassArt basketball team throughout the years, check out our collection on the Internet Archive for more information.
*If you’re interested in learning about specific aspects of MassArt’s history, let us know and we will do our best to cover the topic, individual, or event in future posts!*

Join us at the Godine Library for a talk with Clint Baclawski! He will discuss his body of work from the last decade, including his light bulb series and newest scroll series, which is heavily influenced by his cross-country travels. As a light installation artist, Baclawski's sublime scenes are reminiscent of the art historical greats who have long grappled with the awe and sanctity of the natural world.
