Aldrich Embarked on a New Kind of Challenge – A Blood Pressure Challenge
Did you know 1 in 25 construction workers have cardiovascular disease, and that high blood pressure is the leading cause? High blood pressure can lead to devastating health consequences. That’s why we’ve joined together with the American Heart Association - Washington (AHA) to do something about it – raise awareness with a one-month-long blood pressure challenge. Have you taken your blood pressure lately?

Blood Pressure Education Reaches Hundreds Across Aldrich Jobsites + Office
Our objective was to raise awareness with everyone working on our projects (no matter the company or job description) on how making simple lifestyle changes can improve overall heart health. Because of our efforts, 80% of 155 participants made at least one positive lifestyle modification like getting more exercise, taking 15 minutes every day to relax/decompress, eating more veggies, and cutting out sugary foods. By the end of the four-week challenge, 60 people reported reducing their blood pressure from the first week.

The goal of the is to create awareness and save lives – and we did that! We received positive feedback from many of our subcontractor partners who participated in the program. Holmberg Mechanical brought a beautiful basket of heart healthy snacks to our office with a thank you note. One of their longtime employees took their blood pressure onsite, found out it was too high, and sought medical attention. And they weren’t the only one. During the challenge, eight participants made a doctor’s appointment after learning their blood pressure numbers were high. When a participant makes a doctor’s appointment as a result of learning their numbers, the AHA considers it a lifesaving win!

Read more about the challenge on our blog:

It takes A+ Team!
Special thanks to the team at American Heart Association - Washington led by Julia Martin, Senior Development Director for their direction and support. AHA guided us every step of the way in planning and provided us with all the tools and metrics necessary for a successful challenge.

We couldn’t have pulled any of this off without the efforts of our field leadership and the who coordinated everything from communications, to assembling blood pressure table kits, to delivery of said kits, to arranging lunch orders, to customizing tee shirts, and so much more. Thank you to Ann Warner Smith, Lara Taber, Dave Gray, John Schuh, Matt Perhatch, and John Beaston.

During , we ask ourselves, what does it look like when we say safety is a top priority?

The construction industry's focus on safety is ultimately about resilience — when everyone goes home each day feeling safe and secure in their work, we can keep moving forward in building communities that support people in leading healthy, fulfilling lives.

Aldrich + Associates focuses on health and science renovations and new construction, where working safely means working differently, particularly for construction in occupied facilities where active care never stops. These types of projects require innovative approaches, consistency in protocols, and clear communication — this is where Aldrich excels.

Read about Aldrich's approach to building a secure culture of safety in health and science construction from General Superintendent/Safety Officer Matt Perhatch in Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce Construction Safety Week Special Feature May 6, 2024: https://lnkd.in/gzTNY4QV

Aldrich project manager Dharminder Kaur recently visited the Radiance Learning Academy in Redmond Ridge. She spoke to pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first-grade students about her career in construction. Although the audience was young, Dharminder aimed to inspire and be an example to a new generation of construction workers. Although it may take years to see any recruits from the presentation, the team is proud of Dharminder for sharing her experiences with the class. Her daughter, Meher, was beaming with pride as she and the students were excited to wear hard hats and safety glasses, and everyone took home Aldrich swag.

NATE JENSEN WROTE THE ALDRICH ESTIMATING PLAYBOOK

Lead Estimator/Preconstruction Manager Nate Jensen Celebrates 10 Years with Aldrich. Nate has literally and figuratively written the Aldrich playbook when it comes to our estimating and budgeting processes. “Aldrich is very fortunate to have Nate leading our estimating team. He is incredibly smart and adept at building estimating tools around the unique requirements of our healthcare clients. There is never guesswork or shortcuts when it comes to his estimates which gives us, and in turn our clients, absolute confidence in the information we are providing”, President George Ward said about Nate’s contributions to Aldrich.

In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, Aldrich President George Ward sat down with team member, John Beaston, Tool/Yard Manager, last week to learn more about his story and Native American Heritage.

John is a favorite of the Aldrich family because of his friendly, outgoing demeanor. Always engaging the team in authentic conversations and humor. John’s reputation for his love for food is legendary…he mysteriously seems to make every project BBQ and office birthday celebration! John was born in Farrington, NM, and is half Apache and half Navajo. John never knew his father, but he and his mother (Apache) moved to the Rocky Mountains outside of Denver where she worked as a lineman for the Denver power utility company. John learned early from his mom that if he wanted something, he needed to work for it.

We spent over an hour learning about his childhood, college soccer career at Regis University, adventures fishing in Bristol Bay, and journey back to Washington and path that led him to Aldrich…but that’s another story!

John wears his Native American heritage proudly in his colorful hats, jewelry, and clothing. But even without his outward appearance, his heritage shines through in his resourcefulness, love of family, and creativity. John doesn’t participate much in his own Apache and Navajo tribe events in the southwest but loves to participate in local Native American powwows, salmon bakes, and other heritage events. He makes war shields from rawhide and other custom creations. John used his creative efforts for a trophy for the biggest fish in Aldrich’s annual salmon fishing trip!

I asked John what one thing our society could learn from Native Americans that would benefit us today. While there are countless failures and atrocities in the history of how America has treated our Native Nations to criticize, John showed the grace of Chief Seattle. “Taking care of elders,” John replied. John could not understand why Americans spend a fortune to send their parents away from the family.

Perhaps we should reflect on what it says about our society as a whole. Global elderly care services is evaluated at $1,100 billion in 2022 (LinkedIn Pulse August 29,2023) and it is well documented that life expectancy significantly declines for those in nursing homes versus independent or with family.

As we gather this weekend with our families for Thanksgiving, I will remember our conversation John, and consider how my family will respond to my mom’s declining health. Thank you, John, for being a valued team member, friend, and wise counsel!
