The average adult noggin weighs about 11lbs. It doesn't take much effort to get a response out of 11lbs with a proper punch. No one is in the ring with their neck clenched the whole match waiting for an uppercut. And if they are, it won't do any good πŸ€·πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ. We don't need to dig uppercuts from the dirt. Aaah the uppercut. Most folks want to scoop up every ounce of power from the ground after rocking the punch way back to really get that rock em sock em effect. Lesson! I've said this many times... but I'll say it again. Offense and defense are the same thing from the ground up. The only difference is intent. Did you intend to throw a punch or avoid one? Guess what! You can do both at the same time! *in this vid, Austin only had the jab and I had everything. Rounds like this are to get fighters comfortable with landing the jab and controlling their opponent with it. Knowing that he only has the jab, I'm willing to take different risks that wouldn't be worth the "reward" if he had both hands available. I've worked with lots of wrestlers that have trouble committing to a punch... especially the jab. First... you have to accept hitting the person in front of you and that they are gonna hit you. Then, be deliberate with your punch. If you're shooting for a takedown (Wrestling was during basketball season. I didn't do that mess πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€) you don't half-ass it. You explode for it. Same thing with punches. Shoot that thang out there. That hesitation or timidity will get you caught far more than it'll keep you safe. Don't be one-sided!
Move left AND right with the jab (and every other punch). This is base of moving with combinations. A former 2 time WBO world champ, Adrian Mora, once told me "Fighters look like monsters moving in one direction. Make him move the other way and he'll be average"... ok, so I paraphrased a bit... but he was right. This really applies to many sports. Don't get caught up moving one way because it feels comfortable. Tuesday Training Tip! Practice fluid combos. Don't worry about speed or power. Be smooth. The smoother the punches, the harder it is to tell what's coming. That makes it way easier to sneak in say... a liver shot. Take your time and go slow. Add speed as you get better. Again, focus on fluidity.
