Happy Earth Day from MENV! 🌱

Earth Day was first formally celebrated on April 22, 1970. Led by Senator Ga***rd Nelson, the day sparked a wave of environmental awareness and action, leading to the creation of the and landmark legislation that protects our planet.

Today, we reflect on our deep connection to the land we inhabit and the importance of environmental stewardship and collective action ⛰️ To honor what the earth is today, we believe it’s also important to honor the original stewards of the land. MENV and the CU Boulder campus is settled on the ancestral homelands of the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Ute, and many other Native American nations. We acknowledge the devastating impacts of their forced removal from their traditional territories. While we cannot undo the harm done, we can commit to deepening our engagement with Indigenous peoples and issues on a local to global scale. 🌿

MENV community members (faculty, staff, students, and alumni) are committed to leaving the world a little bit better than we found it. From local clean-ups to international advocacy, let’s continue to honor the legacy of Earth Day and work together for a healthier, more resilient planet. 🌎💛

ICYMI: Masters of the Environment, CU Boulder students went to the Colorado Plateau over Spring Break for Professor Gregor McGregor's Advanced Environmental and Natural Resources Policy Field Seminar. This seminar examined all natural resources, environmental, and American Indian law issues arising on the Colorado Plateau through extensive reading, writing, and a trip to the Plateau over Spring Break. Students had the opportunity to meet and interact with tribal leaders and activists, federal land managers, non-profit policy workers, and industry representatives as they honed their capstone research on contemporary issues facing the Four-Corners region.

There's been a lot happening at the Masters of the Environment, CU Boulder Program! A couple weeks ago we hosted our 2024 Admitted Students Weekend, where admitted students met with MENV faculty, staff, and students to learn more about the program and community.

On the same day, we also held our Capstone Design Workshop where first-year students shared presentations about what they've accomplished so far in their Capstones and where their Projects are headed. Admitted students got to sit in on these presentations and get an exciting glimpse into the potential work ahead.

Thanks to everyone who joined us!

As part of the Building Community Capacity course, MENV students Shane, Gifford, Vinny, and Audrey are working with Lake City, Colorado to develop a Community Action Plan.

Lake City is a small community high in the San Juan Mountains that is known for its remarkable outdoor recreation and historic preservation. Located among 14ers, the famous Alpine Loop Scenic Byway 4x4 road, and two long-distance hiking trails, the town has a growing outdoor recreation economy and has invested in planning for their future. Through the semester, the students hope to bring together disparate interests and build on the planning that has already been done to create an actionable plan for Lake City's future.

02/14/2024

Masters of the Environment, CU Boulder students (left to right: Alejandro, Catelyn, Ally, and Kaitlyn Sorensen), in partnership with the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office and CSU Extension , are providing technical planning support to the communities of Rangely and Dinosaur through the Rural Technical Assistance Program (RTAP) as a part of MENV’s Building Community Capacity course. The RTAP is modeled after the Recreation Economy for Rural Communities (RERC) program, a federal program designed to support communities in developing a community action plan with a focus on Main Street development and strengthening the local outdoor recreation economy. Recognizing the growing needs among rural communities in Colorado, the RTAP was created to provide planning assistance to help rural communities develop a vision for outdoor recreation and Main Street development, alongside goals and clearly defined action items to implement over the next 12-24 months.

The team of graduate students are facilitating this planning process for the towns of Rangely and Dinosaur which will continue through the start of May 2024. A steering committee was formed and is comprised of community members from Rangely and Dinosaur, as well as regional, state, and federal partners. This group will meet regularly throughout the planning process. This process will culminate in an interactive, two-day community workshop hosted at Colorado Northwestern Community College on March 6 and 7, 2024. The purpose of the workshop is for community members to share their vision and desires for Main Street and outdoor recreation development with the steering committee and student facilitation team, and to build collaboration between the two communities and relevant regional, state, and federal partners. Widespread participation from members of the Rangely and Dinosaur communities is welcome and encouraged, and food and refreshments will be provided.

“We are excited to collaborate and work with the communities of Rangely and Dinosaur this Spring! We’re most looking forward to building relationships with the stakeholders and community members of Rangely and Dinosaur to co-create strategies to support their growing needs in the outdoor recreation economy and with Main Street development."

The Masters of the Environment, CU Boulder B Impact Clinic students had the opportunity to visit Conscious Coffees last week to learn how this small Boulder-based coffee roaster, which has been a certified B Corp since 2014, walks the talk. Students tasted their delicious coffee, learned about their roasting process, and heard about the myriad ways they weave their values into everything they do, from how they source their coffee beans and support their farmer partners, to how they prioritize their employees. Thank you to Craig Lamerty and Alex Heaton for carving out the time to host curious MENV students!
