I read this very touching and poignant story. It moved to me share this experience:
Over forty years ago I was a freshman in college. One night I was at a school social event and thing were pretty much normal except my good friend Brian (not his real name) was in a terribly depressed state. Knowing him quite well, this was not the easy going, happy, positive Brian I knew. I asked him what was wrong, but he said he couldn’t talk about it. Sensing something was troubling him deeply, I checked in with him throughout the evening. Finally, he said he wanted to talk. We left the event and went back to our dorm. There we decided to go for a walk.
It was near midnight as we walked around the campus. I felt Brian’s urge to tell me what was wrong like waves crashing against a seawall; desperately yet despairingly wanting to break through. By this time, I knew something awful must have happened and I needed to be prepared for what he may disclose. So, while trying to console him about troubles unknown, I formulated the worst-case scenarios for a college freshman and my responses to them.
First was the possibility that he was flunking academically. I quickly dismissed that as I knew he excelled academically. Second was the possibility that he had committed some sort of felony. I didn’t think this was likely as he was not the type. His father was a successful corporate executive, and his family was kind and imbued with traditional values. Brian was the conservative, high-achieving, straight and narrow type.
Last and worst possibility I could imagine was Brian got a girl pregnant. I mean at age 18 we can barely take care of our own need. To become a father at that age would turn any freshman’s world upside down and sideways. What I would I say to him? What can I say to him as I would be completely unqualified to dish any advice on the subject.
After countless attempts, Brian paused his steps under a lamppost then dropped his head onto my shoulder and tearfully and seemingly shamefully said “I’m gay.” Time seemed to stand still for a moment then started again in slow motion. Not to make light of the situation but truth be told, my immediate thought was relief. Phew, thank goodness he didn’t get a girl pregnant! But wait. What? He’s gay? I guess I was just a bit off on my read of the situation.
Until that moment, I had “never met” a gay person. How should I respond? What I needed was a Plan B. Since I had no wisdom or experience on the subject, my Plan B was to just listen. I heard his fear of not being accepted by his family. I heard his anguish that he will not have a traditional family with children. I heard his hope to find love. In the end, I try to assure him that it was going to be ok. I let him know his sexuality didn’t matter to me. He was my friend and that’s what mattered.
Reflecting on that night, I am not sure if or how much I helped Brian. But I know his trust and courage to come out to me changed me forever. I had the honor and privilege to see my gay friend’s humanity. Through him, I saw other people’s humanity. We shared the same hopes and aspirations for acceptance, family, and love. I have since hoped and cheered for gay acceptance and accomplishments.
I would like to believe we, as a country and the world, have come a long way in recognizing gay people’s humanity. In 2019, I was proud that Taiwan, my birthplace, was the first in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. In 2018, I cheered when my beloved Colorado was the first state to elect an openly gay governor, Jared Polis. However, it is also clear that hatred and fear still fester and cause many to hide and be ashamed of themselves. At PrideFest and gay venues, the recent Club Q shooting reminds us that gay people and their sanctuaries are targets, literally. The countless acts violence and discrimination remind us that some still believe gay people’s humanity is a threat and is less worthy of consideration and respect. I just want to say gay people’s humanity is our humanity, no more and no less.
Much love,
Edwin Zoe
