New for this Fall! Naropa has approved the transfer of up to 90 credits for undergraduates starting in Fall 2024.

The majority of our undergraduate students begin their college journey at another institution and come to Naropa as transfer students. This new addition will make it possible to continue your education here and complete your degree in as little as one year with the support of our small class sizes, dedicated faculty who are invested in students success, and our commitment to help you find and stay true to your authentic self.

We're excited to become even more transfer friendly and help students cross the finish the line 📚💫 See link below for more transfer student info:

This month marks 50 years since Naropa's founding in 1974, and we've officially begun our 50th Anniversary celebrations! Read the press release at the link below to learn more about our 50th-annual Summer Writing Program, the upcoming 50th Anniversary event series, and the impact of five decades of this beloved institution. 💜

“At Naropa, we’ve embraced the challenge of redefining education for a precipitous world. Its students explore the depths of their intellect and creativity—harmonizing academia with the generative practice of awareness and imagination to help the world wake up to itself.” - Anne Waldman, Poet, co-founder of Naropa’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and its Summer Writing Program

Here's to the summer solstice today! ☀️ A day where there is more light than dark. In our latest “Beloved Community Newsletter”, this quote by Joanna Macy was shared, and it is inspiring us today.

“If the world is to be healed through human efforts, I am convinced it will be by ordinary people, people whose love for this life is even greater than their fear” 💜

“As we reflect on the roots of Pride month and appreciate the determination and resilience of the Stonewall Riots and the tangential branches of revolutionary q***r advocacy, I invite you to utilize this chapter of time to contemplate this intrinsic juxtaposition of Pride Month: a moment of commemoration for all of the q***r bodies, spirits, and people harmed for Being who they are as well as a reminder that Living as you are intended is celebrated.“

- Sawyer First, MA Mindfulness-Based Transpersonal Counseling ’25

Naropa is proud to celebrate Pride Month 2024 by honoring the resilience and courage of those who paved the way for our rights and visibility.

“Naropa stands with the millions of Americans who since June 19th, 1865, celebrated Juneteenth, a day of freedom, a step towards reconciliation, and liberation…

Joy is an act of resistance, and in celebrating Juneteenth we are choosing to continue the fight for liberation as a community. This holiday is an opportunity to reflect on the collective journey that America has undergone as a nation built off the shackles of oppression and slavery. Even though slavery has ended, the infrastructures in which this country was born continue to cause oppression, systematic racism and discrimination.”

50 years ago today, Naropa's inaugural Convocation Ceremony marked a transformative moment in education.

On June 10, 1974, fifty-five faculty and sixteen hundred students gathered in a
large auditorium at the University of Colorado campus. Chögyam Trungpa, Naropa's founder, spoke to the essence of this groundbreaking project:

"The Naropa Institute developed from the idea of working with what exists in this country and also with traditions around the world. . . . The basic point here
is that we could work together, we could relate with each other on the basis of trust—which seems to be lacking enormously in the Western educational tradition."

Trungpa's vision was not to reform Western education, but to introduce a "new way of looking at education," addressing the generational cynicism towards tradition and fostering a deeper connection with established cultural values. Join us in celebrating this historic milestone and the enduring legacy of Naropa University. (Quotes & information sourced from Reed Bye's essay, 'The Founding Vision of Naropa University')

Jewish American Heritage Month | Naropa University 05/17/2024

“This year, as we say, “never forget,” I ask that my Jewish community remembers the pain of genocide so that we ensure it does not happen again to anyone, and step up to our commitment to Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. To my beloved non-Jewish friends and allies, please remember the grief and confusion of your Jewish friends this month. We are dealing with a mountain of complexities about what it means to be Jewish in the world today. Check in on your Jewish friends and ask what we need to feel safe. We need your support.”

“The breadth of Asian American and Pacific Islander culture is wide and diverse, and the definition of these ethnicities comes with many questions and exposes the blurry lines of culture. Where does “Asia” end? Where does the Middle East begin? Does it matter? I feel this line in my own body too, as someone with mixed heritage.”

- Luna Rosal, BA INTD ’25

For Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage month, student Luna Rosal wrote a blog piece shareing their own experience of being Pinay (Filipina-American) and examining the beauty and complexity of mixed heritage in a world where lines blur due to migration, colonialization, and cross cultural influence.

Congratulations to our graduates this weekend!

We are so proud of the hard work our students put in to reach this accomplishment and earn their degrees.

It was a great ceremony to celebrate the moment. Highlights from this year’s commencement included a keynote address from Peace Twesigye, director of Buddhist Studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, student musical performance, inspiring student and faculty speeches, and a fun surprise: our graduate speaker Roxana Astemborski rapped her speech and invited the auditorium to dance.

You can watch the whole commencement ceremony here:

“What is the result of broad erasure? As humankind we face significant crisis across the globe if we continue to recognize only one story. To see our challenges and people as one dimensional we will continue to fail to see and perhaps understand the bigger and very complicated picture of us. If we refuse to recognize the social, economic, and political factors that got us here—the cause of our troubles—that limited perspective is our dismissal of potential solutions. If we erase our history, which is truly our collective history, we are leaving out voices that most assuredly would offer us a new and unique outlook.”

Last month we hosted our Peace Cobb lecturer, Rowena Alegría, who is the Chief Storyteller for the City & County of Denver as part of the Office of Storytelling.

Her movement is exciting and inspiring—uplifting the stories and voices of Denver’s diverse communities in order to inform policy and preserve culture. Her work has been noted by officials in other major cities who hope to implement similar departments. At the forefront of Narrative Justice the work is revolutionary and simple: to remember our humanity, histories, and culture as a way forward.
