‼️TRIGGER WARNING‼️ Discussion of Domestic Violence

As Realtors, we strive to support and advocate for the communities we serve. I am choosing to advocate for a cause that is very personal to me.

Governor Andy Beshear recently proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness month. In honor of that, I will spend the next several weeks sharing parts of my own experience with domestic violence, and the issues we face when seeking justice. For years after escaping my situation, I kept this a secret. Living with a silent scream that no one could hear. I was determined to be a SURVIVOR, refusing to allow myself to feel like a victim. It has taken several years of extensive therapy to understand that this was never my fault. I did not deserve it, nor did I deserve the way I was treated by people put in place to help me.

Aside from my family, there are very few people I have shared my story with. When I have, it is obvious that this is a conversation that makes people uncomfortable. But we MUST get comfortable talking about it if we ever want to see change. For todays post, I will share a few statistics from the 2023 Kentucky Domestic Violence Data Report.

👉🏻 44.5% of women and 32.9% of men have experienced physical violence, stalking, or contact sexual violence by an intimate partner.

👉🏻 Of those people, only about 54% of incidents are reported to the police.

👉🏻 Last year in Kentucky, 17,036 emergency protective orders were served by the Kentucky State Police. Almost 1,000 more than served in 2022.

I do not share my experience for sympathy, but I NEED you to understand that this can happen to anyone. I never thought I was the type of person that would end up dealing with this. I have seen first hand how the manipulation can completely ruin your self worth. I’ve seen how it can distance you from family and people who love you.

The hardest time in a domestic violence situation is the time period when you try to leave. There are resources and people to help. I want to get that information to as many people as possible. I am a call or message away. I will support you. I will be a listening ear. I will never judge you for staying because I understand how dangerous it is to leave. I’m here for you. Walking around my yard while on a call negotiating an offer and looked down to see TWO 4-leaf clovers and one 5-leaf clover. If that’s not a sign for a good outcome, I don’t know what is!

To be honest, I’m not sure if my family didn’t have a potato peeler, or my parents just enjoyed watching us suffer 😂 but I’ll never forget using one to peel an apple for the first time. My mind was literally blown. (Also thanks Melanie for my first full kitchen utensil set LOL)
