Where are my menopausal & peri-menopausal ladies? Did you know that there are a staggering 34 different symptoms related to menopause?? 😩😩😩

Let’s not forget 🔥HOT FLASHES🔥 Hot flashes are characterized by a sudden rush of warmth to the face, neck, & chest, accompanied by sweating & a flushed appearance, & are one of the most common symptoms of menopause & peri-menopause

It turns out that phthalates, the hormone-disrupting chemical found in fragrance mixtures in personal care products & cleaners, as well as in certain plastics, are possibly partly to blame!

A recent study published in the journal Environmental Research found that phthalates, particularly those found in plastics & personal care products, are associated with an increased risk of experiencing hot flashes in midlife women.

🔥Researchers found that phthalate metabolites were associated with a higher risk of recently having experienced hot flashes, & experiencing them more frequently, but not with the severity of hot flashes.

In other words, in women who experienced hot flashes, higher levels of phthalates may play a role in their onset & how frequently they occur.

Phthalates don’t build up in the body; minimizing exposure is the best way to lower levels in the body.

Here are some quick ways to do that:

🚫🕯️Ditch home fragrances (candles, diffusers, plugins, furniture sprays, etc)
🚫💄Use personal care products that are fragrance-free
✅🧽Go fragrance-free with your cleaning & laundry products
✅🌪️Increase vacuuming and wet dusting (phthalates are found in house dust!)
🚫🍟Limit or avoid highly processed fast foods, which can contain phthalates from packaging & manufacturing.

Bonus: phthalate exposure is also linked to MANY other health issues, so reducing exposure is helpful even if you’re not experiencing menopause!

We all know that obesity is a major global crisis. Adult obesity has more than doubled since 1990, & adolescent obesity has quadrupled. While most people still assume that obesity is simply the result of eating too much, & not exercising enough, that’s not what the research found.

Obesity is multifactorial. But one of those factors is consistently overlooked: 👀 exposure to chemicals 👀

The idea that chemicals in things like personal care products, cookware, food packaging, & more, can contribute to rising rates of metabolic disease, weight gain, & obesity might SEEM absurd, but there’s a TON of good research backing this up!

👉In fact, chemicals (both natural and synthetic) that are suspected of causing or contributing to the global rise in obesity, are referred to as “OBESOGENS”.

Researchers wrote: “Hundreds of in vitro, animal, & human epidemiologic birth cohort studies show effects or associations between environmental chemicals & obesity, including systematic reviews & meta-analyses”.

Here are 5 ways that obesogenic chemicals can mess with metabolism in ways that lead to weight gain:
👉 Promoting fat storage
👉 Altering hunger and satiety hormones
👉 Increasing the number of fat cells that develop
👉 Increasing the size of existing fat cells
👉 Altering metabolic set points

Much of the conversation around health focuses on diet & exercise - & these are unquestionably essential!!
BUT, if we’re working toward optimizing our health, whether it’s to look a certain way, feel a certain way, minimize your risk of disease, or existing symptoms of disease, we MUST consider our environment.

🍍You’ve likely seen the headlines about tampons containing heavy metals like lead and arsenic. But is this something that we should really worry about?

😱Let’s talk about it!

🩸🩸In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers examined 30 tampons from 14 brands for 16 different heavy metals. Some brands were sold in the US, and others were sold in the UK/EU, but the study authors didn’t name any, so we don’t know which brands. They tested regular tampons, organic tampons, ones with and without applicators, and ones from name brands, and store brands.

💣They found lead in every single sample tested.

So is this bad? Do we need to worry? I’m not going to say it’s good, but the details matter here:

1️⃣When it comes to heavy metals like lead and arsenic, even small exposures matter. No level of lead exposure is safe…
2️⃣…and, because lead (and arsenic) are elements, some amount of exposure is inevitable and unavoidable
3️⃣Vaginal mucosa is very delicate and absorbent tissue…
4️⃣…but this study didn’t determine how much, if any, of these metals were absorbed.
5️⃣Researchers found that organic tampons have less lead than conventional ones (but they were higher in arsenic)
6️⃣They also found lead levels in tampons from the EU/UK were lower than from the US⁠

So do we need to worry, or not??

Given that people who menstruate can use around 7,000 tampons during their lives, each in place for hours at a time, it’s reasonable to assume that this might add up to meaningful exposure in the long term. But we don’t know yet for sure.

If you use tampons and are concerned about this, you can:
✅switch to organic brands that are lower in lead
✅use menstrual pads (also organic preferably!)
✅give silicone menstrual cups a try! While silicone menstrual cups haven’t yet been tested for heavy metal content, given how they’re made, it’s less likely

By now, you’ve probably heard of phthalates, but what are they, and where are we being exposed to them?

Phthalates aren’t one single chemical, but rather a group of chemicals that are used in thousands of applications, mostly within fragrance mixtures & in certain types of plastics. Because of how common they are, phthalate exposure is unfortunately part of daily life.

This is concerning because exposure to some of these hormone-disrupting chemicals has been associated with things like:

❗️Type II diabetes & insulin resistance
❗️Lowered semen quality
❗️Altered male reproductive development
❗️Increased risk of childhood allergies
❗️Endometriosis
❗️ADHD
❗️Breast/uterine cancer

Even though exposure is now part of daily life, we DO know lowering our exposure is possible, & lowering exposure starts with knowing where those exposures are happening! We can generally p*e them out within 24 hours, so when we lower the amount coming in, we can quickly lower the amount in our bodies!

👉Here are some common sources of phthalate exposure:

🕯️Home fragrances: scented products like candles, diffusers, incense, & fabric sprays often contain phthalates
💄Personal care products: scented personal care products of all kinds, along with perfume & cologne
🧽Household cleaning products: kitchen & bathroom cleaners, and laundry detergents contain phthalates
🌪️Housedust: studies have found 100% of dust samples to contain phthalates!
🍟Fast food: Highly processed fast food can be a meaningful source of phthalate exposure.

Slowly making changes to the products you buy & use every day can help to lower the levels of these chemicals in your body!
Going fragrance-free with all household & personal care products, increasing vacuuming & wet dusting (just use a damp cloth), & prioritizing home-cooked meals is a great place to start!

As you learn more about toxic exposures, you might be wondering when the best time to start reducing exposure is. 🤔

The answer is YESTERDAY.

But, we can’t change the past. And we definitely don’t need to beat ourselves up over choices we made in the past when we didn’t know any better. (and truly, we ALL have them!).

That means that the second-best time to start addressing environmental exposures is TODAY!

For better or worse, there are MANY places where exposure is happening. This means there are also MANY opportunities to make small but meaningful changes to lower our exposure.

Here are a few of the most common exposures that are the easiest to avoid (note: “easy” is relative - what’s easy to you, might be challenging to someone else… just do your best!)

➡️Phthalates & VOCs from fragranced items: (candles, cleaning, laundry, and personal care products).
✅Lower your exposure by ditching candles & incense, and switching to fragrance-free versions instead (go at your own pace here!).

➡️Pesticides from conventionally grown foods.
✅To the degree possible, prioritize organic foods, and always wash your fruits & veggies to reduce pesticides (a baking soda soak will do the trick!).

➡️BPA from thermal paper & canned foods.
✅Lower exposure by saying ‘no thanks’ to cash register receipts, and minimizing the use of canned foods when possible.

➡️Microplastics & toxic plasticizers from avoidable plastics
✅Avoid single-use plastic when possible. Opt for glass or stainless steel replacements.

Small changes like these add up over time. Every step towards lowering toxic exposure is one worth taking!

Toxic overburden can produce hormone imbalances. Those hormone fluctuations can impact appetite, metabolism, and energy levels, potentially making weight management more challenging.
