Looking for a little inspiration as you head into the long holiday weekend? In this episode of Good, Thoughtful Hosts, Darren Johnson, a project manager and mechanical designer in Minneapolis, speaks to how he finds inspiration through beauty-seeking in his day-to-day life. For Darren, this inspiration — slowing down and taking the time to notice the beauty around him — helps him refuel and recharge and just be a better person. “It’s a matter of reminding yourself to look around and take note of those things.” Sounds like excellent advice for the coming days and life in general.

From concept to completion: Nestled in a vibrant, walkable area of East Austin on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Ferdinand is a testament to sustainability and wellness in building design. The onset of the pandemic during the design phase provided unique opportunities to incorporate solutions that promote occupant health, safety, and well-being in the context of a post-pandemic workplace. This reiterated the importance of air quality, access to outdoor spaces, and occupant comfort, which became foundational elements of the design.

On episode #307 of our Good, Thoughtful Hosts podcast, Design Director Charlie Deese shares a source of inspiration for him — helping others nurture their own ideas. "What inspires me is seeing that initial spark of an idea in someone else, and then shepherding that through mentorship, or a project, or really whatever the situation is," Charlie said. "I think any designer is going to tell you that you’re more powerful when you’re working with others."

In partnership with Baron Properties, Cushing Terrell provided architectural, mechanical, and structural design for The Mill at Loggers Creek, a multifamily project in Boise, Idaho. The project comprises 125 residential units, including 30 studio, 58 one-bedroom, and 37 two-bedroom units, reflecting a mix that serves the diverse demographic in this near-downtown location.

To activate the streetscape, the design team enhanced approximately 3,350 sq. ft. of nonresidential space with floor-to-interior ceiling glazing at the first-floor northwest elevation and corner concrete masonry features. This space was designed to include offices, a main lobby, meeting/workspace, mail center, fitness center, and a yoga studio.

The project’s outdoor amenities include a pool on the ground level, a courtyard and pathways facing Loggers Creek, an elevated plaza, group seating areas, and outdoor BBQ/dining areas. Also included is space for a future rooftop patio and shade trellis at the corner of Division and Rossi Streets.

Our talented project partners include Engineered Structures, Inc. (ESI), Axiom Engineering PLLC, KM Engineering, The Land Group, Inc., and Rutledge Haro Design.

Construction on the Bigfork branch of Flathead County Libraries wraps up 06/27/2024

Congratulations to the Bigfork community, Flathead County Library, and Martel Construction on the construction completion of the new Bigfork branch library!

This is a project near and dear to our hearts and one that marked an opportunity for our team to embark on a Design for Freedom by Grace Farms (DFF) pilot project, one of only 12 in the world. DFF pilot projects are helping to accelerate the movement to end forced/slave labor in the building materials supply chain through rigorous research and ethical design principles to create a more humane built environment. It's exciting to see the project come to fruition and become a pivotal place for learning and discovery in the community.

“The design is a playful space of colors, shapes, light, texture, and moments of discovery,” said architect Shawn Pauly. “The goal was to meld teaching and learning, bridge generations, support both business and play, offer space for the community and individuals, and create indoor and outdoor settings for enjoying good books.”

Cushing Terrell is committed to creating a safe and welcoming workplace for ALL. We recently launched our second employee resource group, Hue, as a platform for Cushing Terrell team members in the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and allies, to support one another, discuss issues affecting them, plan activities, and more. This is a year-round, all-the-time commitment, but since June is Pride Month, we want to celebrate each letter in the ever-expanding community acronym and anyone who falls within the all-important "+" that follows.

We hope both Hue and our first ERG, Women in Action (launched in 2023), help foster a stronger sense of inclusivity and community among our team members.

We wish everyone a safe, happy, and loving Pride! Attached is a collage of a few of our team members celebrating this month.

The goal is to develop an experiential learning retreat that will enrich the university's higher education curriculum by offering all the benefits that come with being steeped in nature.

Design Director Charlie Deese talks about the long-range planning process and project goals in the newest post on our blog.
