Our friend Austin Mallet died in an avalanche in the Big Willow drainage of the Wasatch Mountains on May 9th of this year. Austin was a stand-out member of the Bozeman outdoor community. Many knew him from his big smile and friendly personality at community skimo races around Montana. He was a passionate athlete and an accomplished mountaineer in all regards. We often saw Austin training in our dry tooling cave at the gym, in preparation for ice climbing season. He was a true pleasure to have around as a member of our community. I was lucky enough to race with Austin at numerous skimo races around Bozeman, and it was always a welcome sight to see his bright smile as he handily passed me ripping uphill. Many others in Bozeman shared a rope or a skin track with Austin in the mountains, and everyone respected and admired his many exploits climbing and skiing around the globe, and his good nature and approach to mountain sport.

His family and friends are hosting a memorial for him Saturday June 22nd, at the Hyalite Youth Camp from 6-9pm. If you were a friend of Austin’s, please join to celebrate his life and remember him.

We're proud of our athletes, whether they're local to Bozeman or exploring the world. We love sharing their stories and successes.

Like Corinne! After college in Bozeman, she moved to Wisconsin. She's a runner and Nordic skier who's been using TMP programs to boost her strength for all her endurance activities.

Even from her local gym in Wisconsin, Corinne can train with our Online Run Conditioning, which focuses on the strength training needed for general fitness, running uphill and downhill, and injury prevention.

She's still tackling trails like a mountain goat, even without access to Baldy anymore. Keep it up, Corinne!

Climbing Coach Highlight: Danton 👋

Danton comes from a big family in the small town of Mason, Michigan. Through high school, Danton was a competitive swimming and water polo player. He started climbing at a small local sandstone crag after high school, with his dad as an influential figure.

Danton eventually began informally route setting at gyms in the surrounding areas, and then got a chance to formally set at a gym called Planet Rock. He worked there until he decided to leave to pursue a degree.

After COVID shut things down, Danton moved to Idaho and started setting again. After a year, he moved up to Bozeman and has been putting up plastic ever since.

Danton is excited to continue the awesome foundation The Mountain Project has established and to offer something badass for everyone across all skill levels to enjoy.

Outside the gym, Danton likes to hunt for crystals and fossils.

Fun fact: Danton got his degree in traditional wooden boat building. One of the boats he helped build while in school was commissioned by the US Navy and is paired with the USS Constitution!

We offer climbing coaching with Danton and Miriam for anyone training for summer or fall climbing goals, or just wanting more focused training and guidance!

Hey TMPers! As summer starts and temperatures heat up, it’s important to adjust your training strategy to beat the heat. Training in the heat can be a whole other ballgame. When we’re hot, our appetite massively decreases because our body is essentially trying to keep cool. Additionally, with heat comes perspiration. Not only do you lose water when you perspire, but you also lose vitamins and minerals, specifically sodium.

The key areas to consider when running in the heat are hydration, electrolyte losses, and carbohydrate intake.

In heat, your core temperature rises more, which means you work harder at a given pace and deplete your glycogen stores quicker than in temperate or cooler climates.

Try these tips to ensure you stay hydrated and fueled for training in hot weather.

It’s official, Pummel Physical Therapy is open!

We’re excited to share that our friend, awesome PT and athlete, Dr. Chelsee Pummel, PT, DPT, OCS, is now running her private practice from the gym.

Chelsee has already worked with many TMP athletes, including The Female Athlete Project 2024 cohort on running analysis and injury screenings.

A lifelong athlete, Chelsee is often riding her bike, skiing, running in the mountains, and competing in all of these things when she’s not working with patients. She was stoked to be on the US national skimo team and compete all over country and Europe from 2019-2021. Chelsee personally understand the importance and meaning of movement in life.

In addition to physical therapy, Chelsee offers standalone dry needling services and will be offering bike fits in the near future out of Bangtail Bike and Ski.

Head to the link in our bio to learn more about Chelsee and her practice.

Who is Montana Wilderness School?

MWS is a local non-profit that gets high school kids, especially those who might not otherwise have the means, into the outdoors on expeditions where they foster new skills and learn to be stewards of our lands. MWS has set the goal of raising $12k during Give Big for their Equipment Fund.

Why does their work matter?

"I want to thank you for making my trip possible. I'm a nobody kid that the world couldn't care less about, however, when I became a part of the MWS community, I felt the praise and support I needed to feel human again, making this experience a life changer, and a life saver. Thank you!"

-Past MWS Student

Help us reach our TMP fundraising goal of $2k to buy MWS 8 new tents for their expeditions.

There are three ways to support the (MWS) at our Spring Crusher workout and Give Big MWS Fundraiser party this Thursday, May 2.
1. Take class at 5:30 pm (all class proceeds go to those tents!)
2. Come hang out, drink beers and eat snacks at 6:30 pm, and make a donation.
3. Donate online to MWS's Give Big fund from 6 pm 5/2 to 6 pm 5/3 if you can’t make it in person.

Remember to sign up for class ahead of time on Punchpass! Everyone is welcome at the party!

Will we see you there? 👋

Attention all mountain bikers! 🚵 Curious about the importance of strength training or if it's even necessary? Coach Kipp sheds light on why it's crucial, so you can conquer those trails feeling strong and unstoppable! 💪

"Mountain biking requires strength, power, stability, coordination, and a bit of fearlessness.

It is important to develop strength and conditioning in a somewhat controlled environment so you can pedal hard and surefooted once you get into the mountains.

Exercises like single-leg box jumps, kettlebell swings, lunge jumps, and clap push-ups can help develop the explosive power needed for
accelerating, clearing obstacles, climbing steep inclines, and performing moves like bunny hops. "

So if you're looking to crush it on the trails this summer, listen to Kipp 😘

Meet Julia! 🌟 You’ve probably worked out with her in classes! We’re excited to welcome former BSF youth nordic competition coach and generally awesome and energetic human to the TMP.

Ever wonder if you are eating enough to support your activity? Sometimes it can be hard to tell, or maybe you just don't know the signs of being under-fueled.

The nature of the training. Frequent, high volume training… requires a lot of energy to complete as well as recover from.

You need energy not only around your workouts, but also throughout the rest of the day to efficiently and effectively recover, prep your body for the next workout, and just to function as a human.

Your nutrition needs as an athlete are going to be higher which means you’ve got to fuel that 🔥 !

A few common signs you’re under fueled:
- Chronic fatigue
- Constant hunger
- Cravings
- Poor sleep
- Athletic performance plateau or decline
- GI issues
- Brain fog
- Loss of menstrual cycle

Not-Coach Highlight: Tori Pintar

Tori has been a member at TMP since spring 2017 and began helping out behind the scenes in 2019 with photos, then our website and marketing. She helps make all things online ✨.

Tori’s favorite exercises are single leg deadlifts and squats on the Swiss ball. And body saw!

Running is the form of movement she couldn’t live without and despite peer pressure from Wolfe, she continues to run road marathons. 😘 She also loves climbing and backcountry skiing, both things she’s learned how to do in her 30s.

Fun fact: Tori has lived and worked in three countries. 🗺️

Have you been interested in receiving nutrition counseling for your sport or lifestyle but want to know what actually happens during these sessions before committing? Our two dietitians, and .shields.nutrition are here to give you some insight so you can come to your initial session fully in the know!

This first session is all about getting to know you as an individual and as an athlete. We’ll go through a series of intake questions to get to know your background and assess your baseline health status, including dietary, social, and clinical history; your training history and current load; any health conditions; relevant lab work; and more. We’ll then dive into a dietary assessment so we can get a good idea of what you are eating throughout the day, surrounding and during activity, and identify areas where behavior changes may be beneficial to you as an individual.

Afterwards, we’ll work together to establish goals and interventions to work on prior to your first follow up session.

Will we see you there? 👋

Last week we asked if you wanted an inside look at the Female Athlete Project sport nutrition workshop and you said HECK YA. TMP coach + dietitian .shields.nutrition is here to share some insight!
Recovery nutrition after exercise can vary depending on the type, duration, intensity, and of course YOU as the individual. Today, lets focus on the 101 of fueling after endurance activity 👇

🍪 During endurance exercise, our body primarily uses glycogen (stored carbohydrate) from our liver + working muscles for energy. Our body has a max storage capacity for glycogen, meaning we have the ability to deplete it (hello dreaded bonk). During long durations, we can even breakdown protein and turn it into glucose (the simplest form of carbs) for energy. This is why we need to focus primarily on a high carbohydrate refuel with some protein within 1 hour of activity.

🍩 Endurance exercise can suppress our hunger hormones, making it harder to eat right after. If this happens to you, try liquid nutrition to make it easier on the gut! Then consume a balanced meal, with an emphasis on carbohydrates, within a couple hours to get all of the additional nourishment you need.

Questions? Reach out to [email protected] for more guidance!
