Recently, while shuffling through on of our many large file boxes, I came upon a large book of Cocteau lithographs my father bought back in the 80’s. What’s particularly special about this series is their limited nature. These pieces are hand-numbered and signed by the publisher. These lithographs are the artist proofs created for the publishing house (epreuve d’artiste) number 9/10. These pieces are very rare and are in excellent condition! One thing we can all agree on...mid-century design is a solid classic! It really is a timeless design, just like my traditional style tattoos. It’s always in style and ages well with the times! Geared towards the female readership of the bourgeoisie, it’s content explored female celebrities of the era, high fashion, and leisure activities. Femina was published irregularly until it was discontinued in 1954. This cover was illustrated by Zyg Brunner (signature one the print). We have a total of 19 different Femina covers! Today, our spotlight is thrown onto what we would consider an interesting artifact we found on our winter trip to the Paris flea markets. This piece of art is actually a schematic and miniature example of a large wall mural going up the side of a staircase. The best part about researching this item was typing into the Google machine the words in the lower left hand corner of the piece, “Villa Cour Creuse” (see image 2). This is the street in which the mural is located. Going to the street view, we actually found the mural (see image 4) as it stands today. Happy Friday everyone! We made it 🤠 Did anyone guess correctly the pieces we were teasing from yesterday’s post? We are now offering a selection of handmade glass decoupage from our short lived project called Working Title Accessories. In 2013, we taught ourselves how to make glass decoupage and once we figured it out, we were off to the races designing and creating these decorative plates. Each piece is carefully handmade, with glass sourced from a small company in the states. The backs are finished with black paint, hand cut felt, and gold key-lines. Each size, shape, curve, and depth was carefully chosen to respect and celebrate the art residing within the lovely handmade work. We stopped producing decoupage in 2016, but we have a bunch of samples we will be selling on our marketplace as we bring them back from our showroom in High Point. These pieces are original wax encaustic with resin on paper probably created in the early 2000s. What is a wax encaustic you ask? The process of making a wax encaustic involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Metal tools or special brushes can be used to shape the paint before it cool, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface. Jody Hewitt is an LA born artist and is still active today. We don’t just source our original vintage art and prints from Europe. We also pick from American dealers. This is where we found this true gem. This is an original oil painting of a community in the outskirts of the small Pueblo town of Taos, New Mexico. This charming little painting was created by Russian born Constantine Cherkas. At the age of 17, he was the youngest artist to ever be accepted into the Moscow Academy of Fine Art (at the advanced level). His studies were interrupted when he was captured by the N***s and worked in a prison labor camp during WWII. He eventually was release when the Allies declared victory over the N***s and went onto finish his art studies in Munich and Vienna. After completing his studies, Cherkas immigrated to the US, where he would settle in New Mexico. His story is incredible and we are lucky to have found a piece like this. The gorgeous little painting has not been altered from when it was originally stretched and has beautiful texture and patina.
