“Is with great excitement we announced that our president won 2020 National Hispanic Health Foundation Scholarship. In 2004, NHHF established the National Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship program for students with outstanding academic records, leadership, and who are committed to serving Hispanics.
The National Hispanic Health Foundation is the fiscal agent of NHPA. As you all might know this is the first time that we bring the National Hispanic Pharmacist Association to LECOM. Our first year of the organization and we have around 50 members and a scholarship recipient. This represents a great opportunity for other LECOM students in the future. We want to motivate other students to apply for scholarships, join organizations, and specially to help serve the minority community. Our mission is to make a positive impact in our Latino community.”

✨HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CHALLENGE✨
“Hello, my name is Raissa. In addition to being home to Machu Picchu, one of The New Seven Wonders of the World, and boasting globally renowned cuisine, Perú is also very rich in diverse flokoric dances. La Marinera Norteña is a romantic and graceful dance that displays the courtship of innocent love. It is said to be originated from the Zamacueca, which was a popular dance dating back the16th Century. This dance is usually performed by a couple where the woman wears elegant long skirts adorned by colorful flowers delicately put in the hair and the man wears an elegant jacket and hat. They both use handkerchiefs as part of the costumes. During this dance, the girl flirtatiously rejects the man's continuos and relentless approach. I grew up dancing folkloric music in Perú, Marinera Norteña was definitely one of the dances I enjoyed the most. Looking at these pictures makes me miss home even more and feel proud to share my culture around the world 🌎 🇵🇪”

✨HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CHALLENGE✨
“My name is Sebastian and I was born in the US, but raised in Colombia. I love to eat bandeja paisa. I love to go on December to celebrate the festivities. A typical festivity that we have is “Novenas” a 9 day holiday that represents the 9 months of Virgin Mary. We also have “feria de las flores” our anual city festival. Personally what I love most about my culture is that is really family-centered. I love the food, dancing to traditional music which is vallenato, cumbia, and tango.”

✨HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CHALLENGE✨
“Hey everyone! My name is Diana and I’d like to share with you about the Peruvian 🇵🇪 culture. Peru is located in South America, and is known for their rich food, geographic regions (Coast, Andes Mountain Range, & Amazon jungle). Most famous of all is Machu Picchu 7,972 feet above sea level- one of the seven wonders of the world. To get there, you must travel to Cuzco and take a train ride to Aguas Calientes followed by a bus ride to the mountains. The hike consists of rocks and Incan archeology. You may run into some llamas and alpacas on the hike up. Natives drink tea de muña and chew on coca leaves to help prevent elevation sickness and gives you energy to make it up the mountain. My favorite part about being Peruvian is the festivities and music that occur during the month of June/July. Where small pueblos gather and celebrate their cultural dances and music form their region. Most families still preserve and speak the native Incan language of “Quechua”. Indigenous women of small provinces in Cuzco, preserve and teach Andes clothing. Where it’s been passed on from centuries. Swipe to see just a piece of Peru’s beauty 🥰”

✨HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CHALLENGE✨
“Hola a todos! My name is Laura L. Cabán Bassas and as a member of NHPA I wanted to be part of the Hispanic Challenge. I wanted to share a particular thing about my country, Puerto Rico but specifically often seen in Moca (my hometown). Moca, Puerto Rico is known as “Capital del Mundillo”, which translates to “The Capital of Mundillo”. Mundillo is a very elaborated type of embroidery in which the artisan uses thread and a unique platform to work with, and the finished piece can be hand-sewn into clothing. In my family, and some other Puerto Rican families, particularly in the West side of the island, when a baby is born they are brought out of the hospital wearing Mundillo, and they can also wear it for baptism or any special activity. Why is it such a cultural and important thing for me? Because my grandma, Marta Romero, is a renown mundillo artisan (swipe to see her picture). This is a great example that even in a small country like Puerto Rico, different cities and towns have their own traditions. Now I have an assignment for everyone! I want you to google “Mundillo en Moca, Puerto Rico”. You’ll be able to see the intricate patterns and beautiful creations of mundillo artisans. Go, search and learn!

We are very excited to share a little something from 4 of our members as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration!
“Being “boricua” (to be from Borikén or Borinquen, the Taino name for the island) comes with an immense sense of pride. You’ll know boricuas when you see them. You will either spot the flag somewhere, or we will straight out tell you that we are from Puerto Rico as part of our introduction. Puerto Rico, as small as it is in size, is the birthplace of people who have literally changed the world in areas like science, art, medicine, sports and so much more. It is only expected that we brag about it because…why wouldn’t we? Right?
Amanecer Borincano (roughly translated as Sunrise in Borinquen) talks about our identity as Puerto Ricans. It uses elements of nature such as mountains, palm trees, fruits, coffee and sugar cane plantations, the ocean, and our precious coquí (a super cute, itty-bitty frog endemic to the island. Google it.) as an expression of what it is to be boricua.
All four of us, as the majority of the Puerto Rican students in LECOM, were born and raised in the island. Moving to the States has been tough on all of us and even though technically Puerto Rico is a US territory, we have experienced culture shock. However, like we said, you’ll know boricuas when you see them, so within a few days of being at LECOM we found people who reminded us of home, were going through the same things as us and they became our family away from home.
As hispanic pharmacists in training, it is special to us that even if we’re not form the same cultural background as our hispanic patients, we are able to bridge a gap by speaking their language. This makes them a lot more receptive to what we say, they can ask all the questions they wouldn’t ask otherwise and in the end it puts a smile on their faces and ours.”

Hola! Mi nombre es Ingrid. I am from Caguas Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and for the challenge as part of the Hispanic Heritage month I want to share a fact about us the puertorricans.❤️You can go to any part of the World and when you see a "boricua" (natural from Puerto Rico) for sure you are going to know is a "boricua"! I remember my first week at LECOM. By the second day you already can tell who is from Puerto Rico by just watching the group of people sitting, chating and laughing together in the cafeteria. Whenever you heard laughter, noise and good food we are all there. Basically what I want to share with you is that we "boricuas" are very friendly, enthusiastic and loving people. We are very proud of our culture, music and food and support each other no matter what! I know sometimes we look too serious in school. However, don't get fooled by that because we do have the "sazón" (seasoning) in our soul. I love you guys, no matter what, we will always be "boricuas" at LECOM!
We would like to share our culture, enthusiasm and positive energy with all students from around the world. 🌎 Enjoy with us all the activities as part of the Hispanic Heritage month in LECOM!!!!

"Every day I am working at the pharmacy, at least 5-10 patients come asking for someone to speak Spanish. Most of them do not speak English at all or have a hard time understanding the language. Today, I had a new mom of a 5-months-old baby, who went to pick up an antibiotic and some ear drops. When my pharmacist first spoke to her, she was all confused and as soon as I saw her look, I jumped into the conversation and offered my help. She did not understand a single thing the pharmacist was telling her. For example, some antibiotics are reconstituted, and the pharmacist during consultation said things like “shake well”, “refrigerate”, “good for 10 days”, etc. For a patient that does not speak the language, it can be overwhelming at first. I informed her on how to take the medication, the proper way to be stored, the amount to be given, and I did the same process with the ear drops on how to apply the ear drops and how long she needs to wait between each side. At the end of the consult, she thanked me and asked what days I was working, in order to pick up other medications for her so that I can do the same thing. This experience reminds me of how important is our position in the healthcare system. Probably, she did not understand the pediatrician, and I am sure, she did not understand the pharmacist on duty. We are here to help you! Pregútame tus dudas. Te puedo ayudar!"
