Questions Archive - PlexiDor Dog Doors 08/25/2024

A common question we get is if it's easy to teach a dog to use a dog door. Teaching a dog to use a PlexiDor is usually a quick and easy process. Most pets learn to use a pet door immediately, although some take several days. Do not push the pet through the door. Start by propping open a panel and coaxing the pet through with a treat.

The following steps will make learning easy:

* Put something your pet really wants on the other side of the door. This could be a favorite toy, or an extra delicious treat. Dogs like things with interesting smells, and most dogs will want to investigate a piece of smelly cheese.

* Prop the door open and call for your pet.

* Praise any progress. It’s important to be patient and maintain a good mood. Babying the pet proves the door is something out of the ordinary and should be feared. Forcing the pet through has the same effect.

* If you have a door larger than small, so it has two panels, start with keeping both panels propped open, and when your pet goes through the hole willingly, close one panel, to show that they will swing open.

If you still have questions, there is more information on our website: https://plexidors.com/learning-center/?category=Training

Don't hesitate to reach out to us!

* Give more praise.

One of ours is, if your dog doesn't take to the PlexiDor, try propping one of the panels open and tempting the pet with a treat. If the pet is reluctant, start with propping both panels up. Never force your cat or dog through the door, and give praise once they do come through. Be patient – they’ll get it.

Time to host a DOG SHOW
– Kick off the month with a dog show for your group. Ask your coworkers, members, and/or their families and kids to bring their friendly dogs to your community. Be sure to obtain a copy of their most recent vaccinations to keep on file. Then, ask each dog and owner to perform a few tricks for your group and share a few fun facts about their dog. Select a few members from your group to serve on a panel of judges. Give awards to the dogs, such as “Best Performer,” “Most Obedient,” and “Best of Show.”

How much sleep does your dog need?
How much sleep our dogs need depends on a variety of factors including age, breed, activity levels, diet, environmental conditions and underlying health conditions. It is not unusual for adult dogs to sleep for 12-14 hours throughout the day but due to these variations there isn’t a ‘set amount’ of sleep all dogs should have.

Large breed dogs can sleep for longer than small breeds and sedentary dogs may sleep for longer than active working dogs! What isn’t normal is if you notice a change to their ‘normal’ sleeping routine for example suddenly sleeping more or struggling to fall asleep, as this could indicate health issues.

Leaving your pet in a hot car is not cool! Each year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion after being left in vehicles on a hot day. Even if it’s just a “quick trip to the store”, what most don’t realize is how quickly the temperature in the car rises to a dangerous level ultimately compromising your pet’s health.

The temperature inside your vehicle, with the windows cracked, can rise almost 20 degrees in as little as 10 minutes. So on a 70-degree day, within 10 minutes, your pet is sitting in a 90-degree car.

A loving reminder....

In 1987, My five-year-old son desperately wanted a puppy. We didn’t have much money, so we went to the local animal shelter. Before walking out the door, my wife yelled, “Make sure it’s a female.”

At the shelter, there were a dozen puppies and at least that many people waiting to see them. While waiting our turn, we walked through the shelter with the attendant. At the end of row eight, laying in the back of his kennel was an old, skinny, broken hound, He struggled to stand and hobbled over to see us, wagging his tail. I looked at my son, he looked at me and I knew. His name was Dutch, and his life cost me $5. Dutch lived another year before he quietly passed away, lying in his bed near the warmth of our fireplace.

Thirty years later we went to my son’s home on Thanksgiving. I greeted his wife, hugged my grandchildren, and then I noticed an old, hound with cloudy eyes lying in a dog bed by the fire. I looked at my son and said, “Let me guess, his name is Dutch.” My son smiled and said, “Nope, her name is Duchess. I paused, looked at the dog, looked back at my son, and said, “You're just like your mother.”

The next time you go to the shelter to find a new pet, don't overlook the ones that have cloudy eyes, scars, bark, growl, tremble, meow, hiss, or cower in their cage. We can only imagine the life they have lived. They haven’t given up the hope that one day they will live in a real home. Be patient, give them a chance, show them someone cares, and they will repay you many times over.

Tips to prepare you dog for fireworks
Here are several things you can do to help your dog feel safe and secure.

Keep your dog inside during the time fireworks are going on. If you have a friend or family member that doesn’t live near the noise, see if you can work out for them to care for your pet.

Don’t leave your dog at home alone. If you’re headed out to enjoy the holiday without them, find a sitter.

Before fireworks begin, be sure your dogs water bowl is full as anxious dogs pant more and get thirsty.

Feed him as well prior, since the fireworks may make him too anxious to eat.

Give your dog lots of exercise ahead of time. Walk him, throw a ball and play with him. This helps tire him out and use pent-up energy.

Have some high-value treats ready. Something your dog enjoys enough that the emotional response it produces is stronger than his fear. Pieces of boiled chicken or squeeze cheese are ideas. Sit with your pet and feed him with each boom. This is to help your dog make a positive association with the noises for the future.

Comfort your dog if he responds to it. Your dog might choose to hide under the bed or behind furniture. If he comes to you for comfort, make sure that you give it to him. Gently petting him can help him feel secure. Long, slow, firm strokes along the length of his body can be very soothing.

Create a safe place for your dog, preferably away from outside windows or doors. Close the blinds or curtains to reduce outside noises, and play some music or the TV creating white noise to help block some of the sound of the fireworks.

Remain calm yourself as your dog will take clues from you. The emotions we display can affect how dogs respond to potentially scary things.

11 Heat Stroke Warning Signs in Dogs | Blog | PlexiDor Dog Doors There are eleven primary heat stroke warning signs in dogs to watch out for when the summer months start to heat up to protect your canine companion.

06/13/2022

Important information as summer heats up.

🔥🔥 HEAT ALERT 🔥🔥

Please, please, please monitor your pets when they go out to potty this Summer! It's dangerously hot with the heat index 105 degrees and higher this afternoon. Already too many hospitalized dogs who have collapsed with heat exhaustion/heat stroke from only being outside for 20 minutes. Veterinarians are seeing dogs with an internal temperature of 109 (high normal is about 102) and their organs essentially are melting inside the body. Those dogs do not survive.

Short nose breeds like Boxers, bulldogs, and pugs are at higher risk so monitor them closely.

Also do not walk your dog on the sidewalk or street until later in the evening or early morning. Those surface Temps will burn their paw pads quickly.

If your pet does experience any of these symptoms today after being outside, take them immediately to your veterinarian. You can cool them with room temp water on your way to the vet. Do not use ice or cold water if they are having these symptoms as it can cause the body more damage.

International Sheltie Day - The Sheltie bears a striking resemblance to the rough collie. Similar to their taller cousins, Shelties have long, slender, wedge-shaped heads that give them a refined appearance. But with their ample fluff; their kind, almond-shaped eyes; their small, high, erect ears bent slightly downward at the tips; and what many owners refer to as the "Sheltie smile," they certainly don't come off as being too prim and proper to be man's best friend. They look every bit as bright, friendly, and affectionate as they truly are.

Helpful Tip -
Use Dog Toothpaste on a Rope Toy
If your dog doesn’t like having his teeth brushed squeeze some doggie tooth paste onto a rope toy & let them go at it. It’s a nice way to start desensitizing them to having their teeth brushed.

How to Remove Ticks from Your Dog with a Pair of Tweezers!
Don’t have a tick remover on hand? You can carefully remove ticks from your dog with a pair of fine tipped tweezers. Grab the tick by it’s mouth area (the part closest to your dogs skin) and pull firmly until it’s removed. Place the tick in a jar of alcohol to kill it, and be sure to wear gloves when dealing with ticks since they can transmit diseases to pets & people.
