WIND ADVISORIES ISSUED BY THE NWS FOR THE ENTIRE STATE FOR LATER TODAY…STRONG WIND GUSTS EXPECTED THIS EVENING AS A STRONG COLD FRONT CROSSES OUR AREA…
A vigorous storm system currently located over the Great Lakes will move quickly to our Northwest today and swing a strong cold front across our area this evening.
The high resolution models (NAMHRES and HRRR) are forecasting that south winds will increase starting around noontime. These south winds are forecast to slowly increase this afternoon and are expected to be gusting to 30 – 40 MPH by 6:00 PM. A few scattered power outages may occur by late this afternoon.
As the strong cold front crosses our area this evening, winds are expected to gust to 40 – 50 MPH along the coast and in the higher elevations between 9:00 – 11:00 PM. Wind gusts in the valleys are forecast to range from 30 – 40 MPH. In the unlikely event that any severe thunderstorms make it into the state, some gusts to 60 MPH cannot be ruled out.
These wind gusts are likely to cause a hazard for any high profile vehicles driving across bridges or other exposed roadways. The wind gusts may also bring down some tree limbs and cause a minor number of power outages. However, the impact on power lines should be reduced because most trees have lost their leaves for the winter.
The south winds are forecast to shift to the west as the cold front crosses the state this evening and begin to slacken down to 35 – 40 MPH everywhere by midnight. The overall impact of these strong winds is expected to be minor.
Big wind Christmas Eve, hopefully it blows 2020 into history.
⚠ A High Wind Watch is in effect for Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, and portions of SE Connecticut Thursday evening into Friday morning.
💨 A strong frontal system is expected to move through the region Thursday Evening (Christmas Eve) with the potential for heavy rain and strong to damaging winds.
Stay Weather Aware this Holiday Week for this upcoming system!
