With 2024 halfway done, Dispatchers gathered this evening to discuss how the year has been, what they've accomplished, and what the rest of 2024 will bring.
Topics discussed were:
- Call volume and call handling (in six months, Dispatchers have already handled over 19,000 phone calls and dispatched about 7,000 incidents, oftentimes with only one Dispatcher on duty).
- Upcoming trainings.
- The new design of the Center.
- New equipment and technology installed.
- How they are going to grow and expand.

Dispatchers then had a training on talking to scared or frantic callers and how they can gather vital information during a dynamic emergency situation as well as how VT 9-1-1 works and the resources they have.
If you're ever interested in touring our Regional Emergency Communications Center, please let us know!

Today, we take a moment to congratulate Sheriff Mark Anderson on 20 dedicated years of service at the Windham County Sheriff's Office!

Sheriff Anderson began his career in law enforcement in 2004 as a part time Dispatcher and Deputy. Fast forward 20 years, and he has achieved numerous accomplishments, such as certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a Master Instructor in RADAR and LIDAR speed measuring devices, serves as the lead instructor of speed enforcement at the Vermont Police Academy, and is the first Deputy Sheriff in the State of Vermont to become a Drug Recognition Expert, serving more than eight years as a DRE.

Sheriff Anderson serves on a variety of boards, including as President of the Vermont Sheriff's Association, Co-vice chair of the Vermont Criminal Justice Council, Treasurer of the I.N.S.P.I.R.E. School for Autism, and Treasurer of the Safe Place Child Advocacy Center Board of Directors. Sheriff Anderson also manages the Vermont Sheriff's Association's scholarship committee for the Vermont Sheriffs' Scholarship and the Vermont Sheriffs' William Graham Scholarship.

Sheriff Anderson also finds time to serve his country with the Massachusetts Air National Guard, 104th Fighter Wing, Weapons Element.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to serving Windham County!

Residents in S. Newfane have voiced their concerns with speeders, and Deputies have been focusing on Dover Rd. while patrolling. Several locals have actually slowed down to thank Deputies while on traffic stops.
Just in the month of June, Deputies have performed 52 traffic stops, assisted the Fire Department at emergencies, performed 5 Directed Patrols in certain parts of town, checked on a suspicious vehicle by the water, assisted a utility company working on busy Route 30, and arrested a driver who was criminally suspended.

Today marks the 251st anniversary of the Windham County Sheriff's Office, so here's a little history of how we started!
Sometime around 1763, the colonies of New Hampshire and New York disputed the land that we know today as Vermont and both granted charters for our land. The New York charter established its domain to the Connecticut River, with Cumberland County including towns from today’s Windham and Windsor counties. The Cumberland County Courthouse was constructed in Westminster and finished in 1773.
If you've driven on Route 5 in Westminster, you might have noticed the historical marker for the "Westminster Massacre" which took place at the Cumberland County Courthouse in Westminster on March 13, 1775.
Among the earliest buildings in Newfane, a plain two-and-a-half-story, wood-framed and clapboarded gable-roofed house was constructed on Newfane Hill in 1787 to serve as the county jail. When the residents in town found that living on a hill in winter was less than ideal, much of the town relocated to the flat of town, now VT Route 30 in Newfane Village.
In 1825, the county jail was built on Jail Street, and was our home until just recently. At one point, a hotel was constructed onto the existing jail, and according to a news article by mychamplainvalley.com, “(President) Theodore Roosevelt at one point came up here to visit a friend of his, and when he found out that the prisoners and the guests at the hotel ate basically the same food, he said, ‘someday I’ll come up and commit a mild infraction and get a lot of reading done’! The hotel wing was built in 1895 and was demolished in the 1950s.”
The Windham County Historical Society now runs the old jail, performing a complete renovation as their new museum. They were careful to preserve the old prisoner writings on the walls, some from the 1800's, where jail cells once stood.
Now, the Windham County Sheriff's Office operates out of its new facility in Brattleboro, still providing service to the county, its residents, and those who visit the green mountain state!
