Monoprint Mondays
with Lauren Watrous

Monotype printing is a process where paint or ink is painted or rolled onto a slick surface and pulled off with rag, brush, swab, stick, or anything found to make a mark. It has a feeling of being thought up by someone making a paint sketch out in the field and wanting to keep a record before wiping the plate, they press a piece of paper to it and make a print. The pressing creates its own unique effects and embeds the paper with a record of the temporary painting.

This class introduces students to basic monotype printmaking including transfer trace, additive, subtractive and layered techniques. Students can then delve into the intricacies of their favorite technique, or layer several of these processes to create multimedia imagery of rich complexity. This class is open to all levels, and non-toxic materials are used.

River Gallery School

In 1976, Ric Campman and Barbara Merfeld Campman founded the River Gallery School with after-school classes for children in the Ingenuity Shops on Putney Road in Brattleboro, Vermont. Art classes for adults followed, and the move to our present studios on Main Street, overlooking the Connecticut River. In recent years, the school has expanded both its curriculum and its space. New classes have been added introducing the opportunity to work with new materials and in a new way. Each year has brought a deepening of the school's vision and of its commitment to the community. Throughout all the changes and growth, the original vision and mission of the school have remained constant.
