Your play piece for today is…
Let process, not product, rule your displays.
I love art, however I hate to admit it but I used to concentrate more on the overall product rather than the process of getting there. If children couldn’t do it, I’d do it for them. I made children stand round a table and watch me step by step create something which they then copied 😔😔😔
However, years ago I heard this story https://youtu.be/mGPHgdDvKoM?si=hFIhdGKsRsU_Co6O and it changed the way I taught forever.
I know in this term Art can take precedence, with Halloween, Bonfire and Christmas coming up but don’t let your need for that perfect wall display to overtake the children own creativity and imagination and above all the process of getting there.
Below are pumpkins we made last year, because some children wanted to. I supplied the paper, scissors and glue, nothing else.
I wish you could have seen the support the children gave to one another, the discussions they had about shapes, sizes and colour. Their pumpkins are amazing because they’re all different, based purely on their ideas and imagination.
It was in that moment I realised, more than ever, that I was the facilitator, not the leader 🤩💕

"From the time you were very little, you've had people who have smiled you into smiling, people who have talked you into talking, sung you into singing, loved you into loving. So, let's take some time to think of those extra special people. Some of them may be right here, some may be far away. Some may even be in heaven. No matter where they are, deep down, you know they've always wanted what was best for you. They've always cared about you beyond measure and have encouraged you to be true to the best within you. Let's just take a minute of silence to think about those people now." -- Fred Rogers
