This is where I staged for phone service so I could record a list of roads that were unsafe for the bus travel. The Transylvania County Schools Transportation staff was out checking roads and reporting back road bed temps between 22 and 26 degrees.

We consider many factors but SAFETY is our first priority when making these difficult decisions about delaying or closing schools.

Here are a few photos of what was looking at this morning. When checking roads and weather conditions the TCS Transportation Staff has to consider 3 segments of the motoring public — School Buses, Parent Drivers, and the Novice Teen Driver.

We want to keep everybody safe this morning. Out of caution we are starting school on a 3 hour delay for Wednesday March 14th.

Brevard and Rosman bus drivers are out doing what they love every school day. TCS Transportation carries 1300 kids and drives over 2000 miles daily. I love coming to work every day knowing these folks are getting the job done! Thank You, TCS Bus Drivers "Simply The Best" Transylvania County Schools

Brevard Middle School is where I fell in love with the school bus as an assistant principal several years ago. "Big Tom" was one of the first drivers I hired back then and he is still driving students safely today. BMS bus drivers and supervisors do an excellent job and now as the TCS Transportation Director, I couldn't be more proud. Transylvania County Schools Tom Siniard

TCS Transportation is thankful to have bus drivers that go above and beyond every day. The drivers at Pisgah Forest Elementary are just a tremendous group of people that love what they do and the kids they transport.

This is Love the Bus Week! I want to thank all of our TCS bus drivers and the remarkable job they do every day. Their service is invaluable in providing all TCS Public School Children equal access to an education. Please take the time this week to thank your child's bus driver and let them know just how special they are!

The TCS Transportation Staff will be out early tomorrow to evaluate road conditions. We anticipate having a few roads closed due to flooding. We will post a list of closed roads by 5:30 am on our social media outlets and www.tcsnc.org/roads.

Basic Safety Tips
- Turn Around, Don’t Drown! ®
- Do not drive around road closed signs
- Avoid walking or driving through flood waters.
- Do not drive over bridges that are over fast-moving floodwaters. Floodwaters can scour foundation material from around the footings and make the bridge unstable.
- Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.

Thank You and Be Safe

Weather 02/04/2018

The weather has moved out, but the wet conditions and dropping, temperatures may create some slick spots on the roads tomorrow morning. The TCS Transportation crew will be up early tomorrow to assess road conditions. Updates on road status and delays will be posted on the TCS website, social media, and local TV.

Due to the uncertainty and chance of freezing rain throughout the morning, Transylvania County Schools will be closed, with an optional workday for teachers.

Because of rules for high school testing, we are unable to take today as a "Virtual Day." When all the details are final, we will send a new school calendar to show this change.

Really appreciate our drivers coming in early to get bus started this morning. All of our garage staff use laser temperature readers to measure road bed and air temperature to help make decisions about school closings and delays.

Timeline photos 01/04/2018

The TCS Transportation Staff did some early morning road checks and found that roads are in good shape. We saw road bed temperatures as low as 5 degrees on Tanassee Gap Rd in Balsam Grove, but the road was well salted and dry. Bus drivers are arriving early so they can get buses cranked and warmed up. Parents, put several layers of clothing on your child and make sure their head, neck, and hands are covered while standing at the bus stop.

01/03/2018

Due to increasing winds and dangerous wind chill lows, Transylvania County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday, January 4. Very cold wind chills are expected. Wind chill values are predicted to fall to as low as 15 degrees below zero. Very windy conditions will also develop, with northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph arriving overnight, with gusts of 35 to 45 mph at times. This will especially be harsh along higher ridges and elevations. Cold wind chills at this level can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. Put several layers of clothing on your child and make sure their head, neck, and hands are covered while standing at the bus stop.

Bus drivers will need to come in 45 mins early to get buses started and warmed up. Drivers if you have any issues please call the bus garage for assistance.

Thank You and Stay Warm

REGULAR SCHEDULE: Transylvania County Schools will be on regular schedule for Wednesday, January 3rd, 2018. Welcome back, and make sure you dress warmly for school!

Schools will check weather before starting any outdoor activities this week. We anticipate much lower wind chills on Thursday and Friday, so stay tuned here and at tcsnc.org for further updates!
