HSHU believes strongly in the power of community and citizenship. Students and staff explore HSHU community values and participate in weekly project work that celebrates the Horizons and Bridgeport Community by bringing the history of the Bridgeport community to life-- understanding the past to feel prideful and hopeful about Bridgeport’s history. All HSHU students and staff members contribute to this community mural—together we learn more about ourselves and the WE to which we belong.
Thank you Officer Dominic Ebert from the Monroe Police Depart for visiting Horizons Notre Dame. We learned so much!
Thank you to the Fairfield Firefighters and EMS workers from American Medical Responders of Fairfield. We loved learning all about how these first responders keep us healthy and safe. And the Ambulances and the police cars were fun to see. And it was exciting when the ambulances had to leave for a 911 call.
We are all smiles today
And so summer happiness begins Thank you to all the volunteers who transformed Notre Dame High School into the best place in the world for our K-4 Horizons students

We end the Behind the Programs series with Lisa Moore, Director of Academics and Family Engagement at Horizons at Greens Farms Academy, who expresses strong confidence in her team and community.
A big part of Lisa’s character is her spirituality; the wonderful encounters with families, teachers, and staff only strengthen her faith.
“I identify with many of the students and families at Horizons since many of their stories are akin to my own. I have a deep understanding of the needs of the HGFA community. So, serving them is not only rewarding, but it comes quite naturally.”
Lisa made a point to share: Of all the years she worked at Horizons, she has never been bored. She describes Horizons as a place that is “ready to adjust and recognize the complexities and the uniqueness[es] of people.” And despite the changes, Horizons continues to “stay connected, encourage, inspire, and grow.”
Horizons partners with students. We offer academic, social-emotional learning, and enrichment opportunities that enable students to transform their lives: “Our students are not mere receptacles or objects that […] need to be poured into, […] they are co-designers in the Horizons program.”
Lisa continues to stand in awe by the amount of support HGFA receives from its board, and the tremendous effort the entire staff puts into keeping this program at its best. She leaves us with a mantra learned from her church’s leadership conference, that guides in the meditations on her direction in life:
“That which makes you cry is what you are called to heal.”
Looking forward to Summer!

In the spirit of the season, Jaime Perri, Executive Director of Horizons at Sacred Heart University, shares how her experiences with Horizons taught her just how much people have to offer one another.
“It really surprises me how a community can come together so quickly. We don't always get to see each other very often [so] it amazes me [that] when we come together on the very first day, we are already a cohesive community, and when you bring in new people, they're automatically part of that […] I think that comes from the energy the kids bring, every day.”
Jaime points out that because Horizons programs naturally start small and grow over time, that it gives the opportunity for all members of that community to grow together, and those “growing pains” make for a stronger community.
“The joy, love, and spirit of the program, and the sense of community and family is something you have to see, firsthand to really, truly understand […] The impact stretches so much further than just academics […] I think Horizons has made me a better person; I think it's made me a better parent. It’s allowed me to live what I've always believed.”
During our social media series, “Behind the Programs” we explore the stories of different leaders, their journeys into Horizons, and how their programs influenced them.
Frank Skawinski, Executive Director of Horizons at Notre Dame High School, shared many thoughtful reflections on his second year. The shift to virtual programming required the new program to adapt quickly, but with the support of Horizons’ tight-knit community, Horizons at Notre Dame met the challenge.
This image captures one of the most memorable moments for Frank this past summer: One of his students ran up to hug him during a supply distribution day, which reminded Frank, “[children’s] true, genuine nature is to embrace human relationships.”
That is one of the reasons why our Horizons Bridgeport affiliates emphasize strong bonds with our families.

We are so honored to have Bridgeport educator, Alisha Price, on our Board of Directors!
In her discussion with CPTV’s Cutline host, Diane Orson, and Marc Brackett of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, she talks about the effects of COVID from the perspective of both educator and parent. Alisha highlights how overcoming these challenges have made her more patient, aware, and ultimately a better person. She beautifully captures the journey of educators during this climate and highlights the importance of social-emotional learning for our students.

Horizons at Sacred Heart University Virtual Saturday Academies had a successful run this month; K-8 students read “Undefeated” by Kwame Alexander (author) and Kadir Nelson (Illustrator), a “love letter” to the Black community that celebrates perseverance and Black heroes of American history.
Each grade practiced close-reading and produced their own interpretations. In three weeks, students considered two messages—“What I think my community needs to hear” and “What I would like to hear from my community”—and came together last Saturday to create Tibetan prayer flags, so the wind would carry their messages to every corner, and through every being in the world.
Teachers committed to a consistent pattern of communication with families to ensure their involvement and offer support. And though summer programming has ended, HSHU will continue supporting its families through counseling services.
HSHU’s project-based learning introduces text to its students that celebrates and encourages who they are and where they come from. They taught us the importance of raising our voices to celebrate our communities, so we ask you to celebrate with us by sharing your love letter with your community!

Today is officially the last day of summer programming at Horizons at Greens Farms Academy, Horizons at Sacred Heart University, and Horizons at Notre Dame High School!
Horizons Bridgeport is extraordinarily proud of our three affiliate sites and their ability to quickly adapt to this digital adjustment—providing their staff, students, and families with remarkably innovative, effective, and fun programs this summer.
Horizons staff guided the students through blended curriculums with great empathy and encouragement, and the students—in-turn—showed us the power of resilience and perseverance. We, as a community, learned and grew from this experience and thank all who played a part—big or small—in this ambitious change.
And Horizons will continue to strengthen our community; providing students with the tools they need to succeed—even in a challenging environment.
We're so excited that all of our Bridgeport affiliates, Horizons at Sacred Heart University, Horizons at Notre Dame High School, and Horizons at Greens Farms Academy, have begun summer programming!
We join with Horizons National in our shared commitment to ensuring all children have the opportunity to thrive and learn.
